Over the years, and specifically in the past few months, our timelines have been flooded with the tragic deaths of celebs like Prince, Doris Roberts, David Bowie and more. Not only does the news of these deaths become a viral phenomenon, but they seem to leave a weight on the world.
As Christians, we know life means much more than the treasures and accolades we’ve stored here on earth. Sometimes these deaths leave us feeling even more weighted with concern for the potential eternity these stars may face. So what is a healthy response to these tragic events that leave us even slightly burdened?
- We mourn. Although we don’t know these celebrities personally, we still mourn because they’re household faces and souls that have left this earth. It’s okay and perfectly natural to feel some sense of loss when a life that you’re familiar with is no longer present in this world. To feel indifferent to another human being’s death should make us reflect on what the worth of a soul means to us. Mourning doesn’t always mean wearing all black or bursting out in tears. It can be as deeply simple as the expression of grief or sorrow held somewhere in your heart.
- We wake up. It awakens us to the sobering reality that no one is immune to the face of death. The rich, the poor and everyone in between equally have an expiration date for their time here on earth. Death does not discriminate, and no amount of wealth or possessions can save you. So we can’t help but ask ourselves: How are we spending our time on earth? Are we living lives that glorify God? We will all have to account to our Maker. We know that tomorrow is promised to no one and it’s important to give consideration to this reality.
- We reflect. It reminds us that there is still a great commission. Salvation is not a game, but the eternal consequence standing on the fine line between life and death. As long as there are people living in this world, there will be people dying in the world, and that should be enough to take the Gospel a bit more seriously than we often do. This verse probes our efforts with the right questions: “But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him? And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them?” (Romans 10:4)
