Bible Verses to Help You Overcome the “Comparison Trap”

COMPARISON

Have you ever compared yourself to another person, maybe a celebrity, by thinking she’s much prettier and more beautiful than you? Most people have! Have you ever found yourself wishing that you were as beautiful as a model or a celebrity?

Many people compare themselves to others by wishing they would look more beautiful or be as popular as someone else. The trap is that as long as you compare yourself to others, you’ll always feel like you don’t quite measure up. That can cause us to feel bad about ourselves if we measure our beauty only from outward appearance.

Ezekiel 16:13-14 says:

You were very beautiful and became a queen. Then you became famous among the nations, because you were so beautiful. Your beauty was perfect, because of the glory I gave you, says the Lord God.

This Bible verse tells us that your beauty is made perfect by God’s glory, His character in you and His opinion of you. That is true beauty, not the outside beauty like makeup, clothes and hairstyles.

So when you understand how precious you are in Jesus’ eyes, you won’t need to compare yourself to others anymore. So accept yourself the way you are, and listen to God’s opinion of you, not people’s.

Here are a couple of Bible verses that confirm the things I have written about:

I am the precious treasure in your heart. I will help you shine (2 Corinthians 4:7).

When they measure themselves with themselves and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding and behave unwisely (2 Corinthians 10:12).

The beauty and delightfulness and favor of the Lord our God is upon us (Psalm 90:17).

Many good points! We’re doing an event for our youth group girls called “Beautiful You” and we’re discussing what the Bible says vs. what society says about beauty, spiritual and physical fitness, self-esteem, modesty, hair, etc. We’re also discussing the danger of comparing ministries so this helped me with ideas about becoming “trapped” in comparison.

Thank ya for postin this! :). Im purddy confident, most of the time, but I have my days when I compare myself to other girls. Sometimes, when I do compare myself to other people, I get jealous, so I talk about them (badly). Dont let Satan fool ya- youre beautiful in every way, just ask God! :)

I agree with ur message, but I’m pretty sure ur Ezkiel reference is taken out of context. I was reading that last night, and those verses were referring to Israel the country, God was telling Ezekiel the He was gracious towards Israel but Israel was unfaithful to Him, like a prostitute it kept being compared to as. This passage would seem to be better in order to show the worth God sees in us “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”

    (Matthew 10:29-31 ESV)

Hey. Don’t Compare yourself to Nicole! Don’t compare yourself to anyone! Without a doubt, Nicole is EXTREMELY beautiful, and so are YOU!! We all are because we are made in the image of God! Inner beauty is way more important than outer beauty, but we are all beautiful on the outside too because God created us the way we are. God Bless You beautiful girl <3

Thanks so much for posting this!!! These verses will help me soooo much!! For the past months or so, I’ve always compared myself not only to celebrities but to my friends or others I know. But now you’ve reminded me that I’m beautiful in God’s eyes and he created me exactly how wanted me to be and I shouldn’t want to change that. Thanks so much!! And we are ALL gorgeous and wonderfully made. :) God bless!!

Love this! I am constantly comparing myself to others and that’s obviously unhealthy. Thanks for giving me some verses to refer to!

I have found something that is very helpful if you are comparing yourself to other people/celebs/models. Take a picture of yourself and go onto a website called foto flexer and photoshop the picture. That’s what they do to celebs.

Thankyou so much for posting this!! I used to compare my self to the other girls i know and i would always convince myself that I’m not pretty enough. BUT I AM! Because God created me just the way he wanted me! I now know that i am a beautiful girl, inside and out. Don’t compare yourselves to other girls, ladies! Embrace the beautiful woman God has made you into. God Bless <3

You’re absolutely right. I used to compare myself to celebrities and constantly convincing myself that I’m not that pretty, that skinny … but now I understand that it isn’t everything. The real beauty comes from the inside :) We are ALL beautiful :)
