Christian Challenge: No Mirror for a Week! By PI Girl Jessinia

Challenge: No mirror for a week (less about appearance, more about God).
I was inspired by Kjerstin Gruys, who vowed to not look in the mirror for a year. Six of those months led up to her wedding day! Read her blog here.
Women look in the mirror an average of 70 times per day! Our world is becoming obsessed with appearance, myself included. Though I dress modestly and don’t wear a ton of makeup, I still care about my appearance, as every woman does–it’s in our nature. It started with Eve in the beginning of time:
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate (Genesis 3:6).
Eve saw that the fruit looked good; the appearance was beautiful. It’s natural to worry and focus on appearance because that’s how our sin began. God made us beautiful but wants us to focus on Him and not worry about how we look.
So I decided not to look in the mirror for a week. It wasn’t very long, but it was a challenge. My aim in the beginning was to bring me closer to God.
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).
During the week, compliments I received on my appearance were even more of a confidence boost than before. I’ll admit that I was paranoid the first couple of days because I couldn’t make sure my outfits were just right or that my hair looked okay. But eventually, I didn’t care about every detail of my appearance. It was liberating not to worry about how I looked.
I encourage you to try this! It definitely is worthwhile and will give you an amazing sense of confidence. I already find myself looking in the mirror less. You can make up your own rules to be more or less strict; here are some rules and tips to get you started:
1.) Before you start, take down mirrors in your room and ask your parents if you can remove mirrors from your house. If it’s not possible to remove them from the wall, you can put a sheet or towel over them.
2.) Reflective surfaces do “count,” so don’t look in windows, glass, or phones.
- A note on this: I kept seeing my reflection everywhere! The best thing to do if this happens is simply to look away.
3.) You should look in the mirrors while driving so you don’t crash, but make sure you aren’t looking at yourself.
4.) If video chatting, turn off the part to see yourself. Make sure you know how to do this ahead of time.
5.) Avoid looking at pictures of yourself during this time. It’s hard not to see pictures if you’re on Facebook or around your home, but try your best because you may start criticizing your looks otherwise.
6.) You can ask others to make sure you don’t have anything in your teeth or anything that may cause embarrassment, but don’t ask about every little detail. You are beautiful and shouldn’t worry.
7.) Wear minimal makeup and apply it without looking. I suggest practicing beforehand. Eyeliner may not be a good idea–you don’t want to end up poking your eye while applying it. The best thing to do is just put on foundation. I ended up not wearing makeup for the majority of the days.
8.) Focus your time on God and read your Bible. This is a perfect time to start devotions on appearance or confidence. There’s a great one on the YouVersion Bible app for your phone.
9.) Pray! This is very important. You should tell God about this challenge and ask for His help and guidance.
10.) You don’t need to tell everyone. I would keep this between God and your family and closest friends if you must. It’s a personal journey and doesn’t need to be announced.
I’m going to start a topic in Girl Talk under Real Beauty. Here PI girls can support each other and I’ll be able to answer any questions you have about this challenge! This is truly a great experience and I assure you it is worthwhile!

I’m so in this should be fun
OOH,I can’t wait to try it!
I think I will do it.
Honestly, I can’t do this and I’m not going to try. Not because I’m vain and look in the mirror a lot, but because my whole closet door is a mirror and we have pics everywhere. So it wouldnt really work. Either way, I don’t like looking in the mirror a lot anyway, I only do it to make sure my hair’s not crazy and I have eczema so I kind of have to look when I’m applying my creams and stuff. However, the point of this is to not be so vain and obsessive about beauty and that I can make a conscious decision to do. This might not work with all girls, as not being able to look in the mirror might make them MORE obsessive about how they look, even more than before. But we can all try to not worry about it. It’s more about that conscious decision than how you go about it, really
It’s great you don’t look in the mirror much! I have a huge 3-fold mirror in my room too and ended up finding a huge sheet to put over it; I agree it’s tough. You’re right it’s different for all girls, and however girls can see their beauty is a good way to go
I love this! I think I am going to try it! Was it very had for you Jessinia?
Yay! It’s worth it! It was a challenge at first, but it got easier as the week went on. The hardest part was probably avoiding seeing myself
I think if I would’ve had an event where I needed to dress up it would have been much harder.
I just put up a blanket over my mirror in my room! Im kind of excited but a little nervous about this because I rely on mirrors a lot… I have just realized but I think I can do it! (: thanks for the challenge!
I’m going to try doing this!
Definetly doing this starting tomorrow! I think this is a great challenge for teenage girls! These seem like the years were we do vanity the most. Instead of looking at ourselves for a change lets look at God! And see how great He is!
Hey! I tried this for a few weeks during summer vacation last year! It was challenging at first because I didn’t take down all the mirrors in my house- simply avoided them- but all in all it was totally worth it. By not seeing myself for a couple weeks I managed to stop caring (at least obsessively) about my outward appearance and I’ve been learning to let my inner beauty be what I care most about (aesthetically- that is.)
I know I’ll be doing it again!
Loads of love and many blessings <3
Psalms 37:3-6 tells us several things to do to make our inner beauty shine:
“Trust the Lord and do good. Live in the land and feed on truth.
Enjoy serving the Lord, and he will give you what you want.
Depend on the Lord; trust him, and he will take care of you.
Then your goodness will shine like the sun, and your fairness like the noonday sun.”
Good luck to all of you who are trying this! It will prove very rewarding to you, I’m sure
That’s great! I love the verse
oh wow. i dont know if i can do that
I LOVE this idea and am totally gonna try it out! Thanks for sharing
You’re welcome. Good luck and many blessings
I think if I did this I would be MORE concerned on how I look, rather than thinking about God. I know that sounds self-conscious and conceded (and I don’t really think I’m either of those things…) but I’m not sure if this a good idea for me at the moment.
That is so cool! At this one Christian camp I go to, there is a “Natural Beauty” day: no one is allowed to look in a mirror and none of the girls are allowed to wear make-up!
You go to AV too? Or is it another camp? Even if it is, YAAAAAAAY
A fellow camper!
im gonna try the mirror challenge yay. its like fasting your looks
I going to start this tomorrow! The only hard thing is pretty much my entire bathroom is mirrors, but I can just close my eyes.
Yay! you can also try bringing some of your toiletries to your bedroom or a different bathroom
I think I worry way to much about how I look, so I’m definitely gonna try this! I can be the ugliest person on the face of the earth, but if I love God and serve Him, that’s all that matters.
That’s awesome and so true! I’m sure you’re gorgeous
Aww… thanks
Great article too
I’m not sure if I’m strong enough right now… but I think I’ll try.
You can do it
If you want, only try it for a couple days to try it out! And ask friends or family for encouragement or check out the Girl Talk on this topic
What about doing your hair? Idk if i can do this bu it sounds fun
so i guess I’ll try with some edited rules i guess…
you can ask a family member to make sure it looks fine; just brushing through it or putting it up works too
you could limit your mirror time to like once in the morning for 3 minutes if you wanted!
I would, but I can’t. My District Manager comes in un-scheduled sometimes. (well, my manager knows, but doesn’t relay the information.) And if I don’t look appropriate, then me and my manager could be in trouble. However, I could possibly do 1 day.
This is going to be a bit hard for me…. There’s a wall of mirrors in the choir room and when i go to practice everyone is in front of the mirror…
You could try not looking in those mirrors or not staring at yourself while in the room. If all else fails, make an exception to the room
I’m not big on appearances. I never wear make-up (last time I wore it was for Homecoming), I only blow dry my hair, and I am modest with clothes. I only use the mirror when I’m in the bathroom brushing my hair or teeth, getting dressed (making sure my outfit looks good), etc. I’m up for the challenge. I’ll try it!
I look in a mirror like twice a day to put on make-up and take it off; the rest of the time I just avert my vision somewhere else. I don’t like the way I look. Not seeing myself, worries me a little! I don’t want nasty green junk in my teeth! If I go in a bathroom I glance in the mirror to make sure I am still me and wash my hands without looking at it.
i wish i could try but i have TONS of mirrors in my house:)
We do this at Antiochian Village! It’s called ‘Inner Beauty Day’ and you’re supposed to do good deeds too. And wear sweats, or pajamas or something modest, and no make-up. It’s pretty interesting, considering I don’t wear make-up (except lip balm, I sort of need that) it’s a lot easier. One of the upsides to not wearing make-up, is that if you have an itch in your eye, you can just rub it without fear of smearing your eyeliner!
Ha! I’d do this (fairly easily) but my mom and sister would kill me. My tendency is toward the sloppy end anyways.
Why don’t you just avoid looking at the mirrors?
when i look at a mirror, im usually just checking to make sure my teeth are clean and i dont have dandruff or some thing cause thats just gross. i doont care about being pretty or anything i just like having good hygiene and being neat
Amazing – I’m trying it.
wow, this is gonna be hard, since literally HALF of my room is covered in mirrors, haha.
Yeah that’s tough! You could sleep in a guestroom, cover the mirrors or just try your best to avoid them
I’ve been doing this for three days now.I can’t take down my mirrors but I refuse to look at them.I keep looking at my photos by mistake then remind myself to just look away.
That’s great! Make sure you’re reading your bible for extra encouragement from God!
i will do this! so excited(:
y did you write on ur mirror w/ lipstick??? das jus strange! :/
I think its because the picture, in a way, symbolizes the article. Maybe, it means that beauty overshadows appearance. As in beauty is so much more than one’s appearance.
@shanedawsonfan233 It’s not a picture of me and I didn’t pick it so I’m not sure.:) @katiana07: I love that interpretation!
this is so cute!!!
I am definitely going to try this. I find myself constantly looking at the mirror, especially since I never wear make-up. I hope this helps me to cease comparing myself to others and accept myself the way I am. I need this to focus less on my appearance. Thank you so much for this idea.
<3
This would be really fun to do, but I wear make up everyday and that includes eyeliner….. this will be interesting. Gonna try anyway
I’m going to do this but i know that it’s going to be hard if i do it myself so i’m pressing in to God praying that he can help me through this. So if you guys can pray for me
I’ll pray for you @ashton.brown4323! It’s so awesome you’re trying this
He will help you and bring you closer to Him.
I am so doing this! We’ll see how this goes…
Yay! Let me know how it goes
Starting this tomorrow! Gonna be hard, but God will help me! I realize that I look in the mirror a lot these days.
I’m trying this(: And maybe it’ll convince a few other girls at my school to try it out too!
I would love to try, but not until I get used to putting my retainer in without a mirror haha. I can’t get them in right without a mirror. But as soon as that happens, I gunna try it!
i just started turning my mirros and pics around. and the ones i can’t turn around i don’t look at it. :/
Ohh lord lol. This is HARD HARD HARD!! HAHAHA
i should do this, it sounds like fun!at my sister’s college, alot of girls do this, but instead of covering the mirrors, they just write bible verses about beauty on them
I’M IN!!!!! I’M GONNA START TOMORROW =)
Wow
AHH I CAN’T WAIT TO DO THIS. MESSY HAIR.. HERE I COME!
I’m gonna try this!! Such a good idea thanks!
Oh, well, here it goes!
