The things God says about us are so important that we should have them memorized! That way, we can pull them out as weapons to combat negative thoughts and feelings that try to overwhelm us during the hard times. So today, I’ve compiled a short list of some of the things God says about us, His daughters!

• God’s child – John 1:12-13: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name who were born not of blood not of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” You aren’t just some tag-along after Jesus; you’re God’s child.
• A branch of the true vine, a conveyer of Christ’s life – John 15:1,5: “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” I think this is my favorite because it reminds us that we bring the life that Christ offers to the rest of the world.
• Crucified with Christ – Romans 6:6-7: “Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.” How can sin have victory over us if we’re dead to it? We were crucified with Christ and that means we are dead to sin; sin has no power over a dead person. Think of it like being in the witness protection program–sin shouldn’t even know you’re alive.
• Friend of Jesus – John 15:15: “No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
• Temple of the Holy Spirit – 1 Corinthians 6:19: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” Remember that life-giving spirit that God breathed into Adam to give him life? Yeah, that’s the same Spirit that lives in you. When you accept Christ as your savior, God breathes that same Spirit into your heart where He sets up house. Is the temple of your heart decorated to receive such a distinguished guest?

Girls, when it feels like life or the enemy are trying to beat you up, remember these verses so you can tell the enemy who the Creator says that you are. If you have Christ in your heart, that makes everything the devil says about you false–no matter who you were before Christ–because you aren’t that person anymore.

While I was researching the concept of “Empath,” it became pretty evident that the concept is not biblical. Empaths are described as people who are constantly bombarded by the emotions of others to the point that it often becomes overwhelming for them. Some people who consider themselves to be Empaths even claim to take on the pain and physical ailments of others. Clearly, this isn’t God’s work.

Jesus is a Healer, so if He did allow someone to experience the pain of others, it would be for the purpose of healing and it wouldn’t be that overwhelming. Also, God certainly wouldn’t want believers to take on the illnesses of others. Satan comes to kill, steal and destroy, but God comes to restore and give life more abundantly. Receiving the ailments and overwhelming negative feeling of others seems more like the enemy trying to steal the joy of others, not about God restoring His joy to the hurting.

It’s probably not a good idea to refer to yourself as an Empath because that suggests a couple of things:

• First, it focuses a lot on negative feelings, versus helping others move past the negative emotions.
• Second, it takes the focus off of God. Empaths believe that this ability is about them connecting to others and the universe, rather than acknowledging the restorative power of Christ.

As a child of God yourself, what you’re probably experiencing when you sense the distress of others is a spiritual gift in operation. The Bible says that at the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of every believer and each believer receives a spiritual gift. According to 1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT:

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

So the difference between being an Empath and operating in your spiritual gift is purpose.

God gives spiritual gifts to equip and empower you to help others. You express a strong desire to help others who are hurting, so one of your spiritual gifts may be mercy or exhortation. You’re probably a great friend, and people probably seek you out for counsel. That’s awesome! In fact, your God-given life purpose might focus on helping people who have been hurt in some way.

My suggestion is to ask God to reveal your gifts to you; then, ask Him to equip you to use your gifts to help other people. When you do this, God will begin to use you in a mighty ways so be prepared for a radical change!

When it comes to what to wear, dresses are the classic graduation choice. Try to find something that’s simple and chic so you’ll be comfortable! For shoes, comfort is key. While it’s true that you’ll spend most of the ceremony sitting down, you’ll likely be walking up to shake hands and grab your diploma at some point in front of hundreds (or even thousands) of onlookers. One of many graduates’ biggest fears is tripping and face planting in front of all of those onlookers, so it’s important to wear something you feel comfortable walking confidently in!

Wedges are a great option, since they’re more comfortable than heels but still give you a bit of added height and elongate your figure. Not well versed in walking in heels? Stick to a basic pair of flats or fancy sandals. (Forever 21, $25)

Graduating outdoors? Even if you aren’t, you’ll likely be going outside after the ceremony and snapping pics, or taking photos in your backyard at home. While you’ll definitely want some shots sans glasses, it’s totally fine (and adorable!) to get some pics of you and your friends in your unique and fun sunglasses. This is another opportunity to pick out a more trendy piece and let you personality shine. (Wet Seal, $7.50)

While we wouldn’t recommend piling on the accessories, if you’re more into headbands than say, a chunky necklace or big ring, we love this sweet and simple garden hairpiece. It’s perfect for any girl who considers herself a flower child or just wants to make a nod to summer. Of course, if you don’t like our pick, there are tons and tons of headbands and hair clips to choose from–just make sure not to sport anything so large that the people sitting behind you won’t be able to see the speaker at the podium! Modesty should be determined by Christ’s teaching. This is why we look at the clothes and not the people wearing them!
