Hi! (just FYI, I am 16 and a junior in high school right now)
All of my life I have wanted to be a teacher, just like my parents are – I’ve always been able to go straight to that when thinking about what I wanted to do with my life, up until maybe last year, when that really just didn’t sound appealing anymore. That stressed me out, because I’d always been confident in my plan, but now, I just didn’t know what to do. I have always had a knack and love for working with and helping people, so I knew I wanted to do something working with people. Lately I’ve been thinking about studying psychology and possibly becoming a counselor, because psychology really interests me, but then last weekend, I went to this Christian camp for the weekend that I’ve been going to since I was little. My church’s new youth pastor was the speaker, and he was amazing. The night after I got back, I was talking to my little brother late at night and somehow we got on the topic of college, and suddenly something popped into my head: I realized I wanted to do something with youth & family ministry, just like my youth pastor does.
I have grown up in the church but have lived overseas the past 6 years, which has made it hard to keep up my faith without a good, solid church and community to be with. Now that I have moved back to the US (WA, my home state), I have been working hard to grow in my relationship with Christ and have felt closer to Him even just the past few months. I want to look at Whitworth College and possible Seattle Pacific University, as those are both Christian schools and I know many people who have gone there. (has anybody been there? if so, please reply and we should get in contact!)
So, anyways, I was just wondering if any of you can relate to this. I want to look at getting a job (I work at childcare at my church 2-3x per week, but I’d like to do something else too), and it might just end up being at the mall or a coffee shop or something, but I was wondering if any of you have ideas of jobs teens could get that could help me look into the youth & family ministry area more? Or just any jobs that you’ve done.
Thank you so much, I would sincerely appreciate any feedback! <3

Well, you could start your own babysitting agency (that would help with getting to know kids) or work for one. It’s good that you’re working for your church. Other than that, I’m not sure what else:) lol. I’m bad at this kind of advice. But please let me know if it helped! And….MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! 😀

Well what you’re feeling is completely normal. It’s rare for 16 year olds to know exactly what they want to do with their lives 😉 If you think you want to work with kids, then I highly recommend you try it out, whether it be a job (summer would be an ideal time for that) or volunteering, even if not too often. Your church is probably a good place to start in regards to looking for opportunities; just talk to someone there and see if they can point you towards some opportunities. You’re not the first person to want to test the waters in a potential future career 😉
