I really want to know what you think of this idea I have on free will.
I notice that oftentimes when pastors and bible scholars speak about free will they do so in a negative way, ie. “You are designed to do good, but you sin because you have free will.”
This really makes free will out to be a bad thing, but when you think about it, it shouldn’t be.
Ok so here’s my idea:
Maybe free will is not so much about having the ability to sin. Maybe free will is the ability to be creative, and to learn, and to choose not only between a negative and positive choice, but to choose between two positive choices, as well as the ability to obtain knowledge. I think one reason people sin and make bad choices is a lack of knowledge. In Hosea 4:6 God talks about people perishing for lack of knowledge.
Anyway, if sin really is mainly a lack of knowledge, (knowledge such as not knowing your true identity in Christ, or not knowing that God will help you, or will vindicate, restore, bless and love you) then it would explain why we could still have free will in Heaven without sin: Look at what Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 13:12~
Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.
So in Heaven we will know everything completely, so why would you sin? And you would still have your free will to create and learn (or maybe you wouldn’t need to learn since you know everything?! IDK this is confusing, sorry!) , you just wouldn’t be held back by things like greed, anger etc.
Have you ever noticed that anger or jealousy is often from a lack of knowledge or a misunderstanding? ie. We are super jealous of someone who looks “perfect” but in reality that person struggles with XYZ or has some terrible problem and if we knew we wouldn’t be jealous see? Or we get angry when we think someone in patronizing or whatnot, but what we don’t know is that being patronizing wasn’t their intention at all.
TL;DR~ ~Free will is not so much about choosing sin, it’s about having the freedom to be creative, to think differently than the next person, learn, etc. Sin is caused by a lack of knowledge, but since our knowledge will be made complete in Heaven we won’t sin. Therefore, we can have free will without sin in Heaven.~
Sorry if this is all over the place or something isn’t clear. Just ask and I’ll try to clarify. I haven’t heard this particular idea anywhere, so I wanted to see what you girls thought.

Yes, it’s true we do have a lack of knowledge and I understand your point on free will as being a tool to use positively. Free will to me has always been the opportunity to choose as one sees best, but the problem is that our knowledge isn’t perfect and we often make rash and hasty decisions. Free will in my opinion must be submitted to God, or else we’d choose to go the wrong way.
Deuteronomy 30:19-“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may”
Rather than my will, I want God’s will to come first in my life.
Isaiah 55:9- “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Thinking on my own has already led to much sin and regret, but as long as I submit my thoughts and decisions to the word of God, I’ll be considered right in the eyes of God. My way is wrong, but His way is Truth and the only path of goodness.
