Obviously I know the “correct” answer: To aid in sexual purity, and so as not to freak out one’s neighbor (which would certainly occur if you walked around nude) etc. 😛

But if that’s the reason, why did Adam and Eve feel the need to be clothed after they sinned? (Genesis 3:7) It was only the two of them, and they were married.

What does clothing really signify?

BTW-I have no desire to discard my clothes tehehe I just find this question interesting.

The reasons are threefold.

1) Not nekkid
2) Not cold
3) Clothes are cute

OKAY THEY ARE MORE THAN THREEFOLD

4) Without clothes, we’d look dumb wearing shoes
5) Less bug bites/injuries/unfortunate things happenin’ in them special regions

^^Yup, that’s the basics.

From an evolutionary standpoint (and from what I learned in fashion history), it was first for protection from the elements (survival), then to attract a mate (aiding in procreation, species survival). Then as society evolved, it was for modesty, to signify one’s status, to identify yourself as part of a tribe/community, for religious practices, for functioning in certain jobs. And tradition carried it on, each period’s mindsets affected the comfort, the form, the function of clothing.

While all of these are pretty much right if you also want the biblical anger it was because they were naked (physically and spiritually) before Good and each other and so they were ashamed of that (knowing their own failures and imperfections that came after sinning) and so they attempted to cover that up.
When they did these with fig leaves (which are extremely itchy and nut good covering) Good made them clothes out of skins which was a covering of blood and death for their sins since they were covered up but something else had to die for that

I’d say warmth. In some warmer regions of the world people don’t wear clothes at all.

We learned about this is Theology class. It was because Adam and Eve both decided what was right and what was wrong for themselves. So Adam and Eve both felt like the other was judging them on how they looked. The tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil made it so that man decides what is good and what is bad for themselves.

Hope that helped.
