My lunch buddy, a fifth grade girl, seemed excited to see me yesterday but was very quiet and nervous around me. We moved to a different lunch room without her classmates, so they weren’t there to break the silence either. Yesterday I already worked my way through the typical “what’s your favorite school subject/ what do you do for fun/ who’s your best friend” type questions. I’ll be meeting with her every week for the rest of the semester and, since neither of us are particularly bubbly or chatty (though I tried to be yesterday lol it didn’t go so well) I’m worried it will get awkward and not be a positive experience for her.
Here’s where you come in! 🙂 for those of you who have younger sisters/friends, what kind of stuff do they like to talk about? Do yall have any ideas for questions and conversation starters for me to try? Any tips on how to get her to warm up to me?

Ask her what her favorite color is, or just some really fun questions like what are some fun sleepover ideas, what type of music does she like, or movies. And just seem really interested. The more you get to know her, the easier it’ll be. I have younger sisters and cousins, so I hope this helped.

Ask her what her dreams and goals and ambitions are. Talk to her like you would a friend, just keep in mind she’s a little younger. Tell her funny stories that happen in your life. Movies are definitely good talk about too, and books. Try to find common interests 🙂

Try to find things she’s interested in and talk to her about them (even if they may sometimes seem a little silly to you).

I have a 12 year old sister, 12 year old brother and 11 year old brother. I really talk to them about anything. Open up to her. Tell her a secret of yours ask about her friends. My brothers and sisters friends who are girls will have long conversations with me about the guys i like or my friends. REally in reality they aren’t that much younger and are at the age where they want advice about boys (or girls) chances are if you open up and talk to her about your life then she will have thing s to tell you about her life and the things she likes. Hope that helps!
