Hi girls. So, as I have mentioned before on this website, I am not allowed to wear bikinis. At this point, I am 18 and still live at home. So, this summer (although I may have to go behind their back) I am going to wear a bikini for the first time. I guess, I’m just becoming my own person and now that I’m 18, it IS legal. I had a long talk with my youth leaders about it and my male youth leader said that a one piece is just like “swimsuit skin.”

Anyway, do you think it is wrong if I go behind my parents’ back? My mom will still say no, she is a stickler for modesty. But I will actually be 19 this summer, so that means I can make my own decisions. What are your thoughts?

The Bible says to honor your mother and father. The decision is ultimately yours. But ask yourself, would it be glorifying to God to go behind your parents back and show off your skin?

Yes, it’s ok. Honoring your mother and father does not mean to obey them. The bible tells children to obey their parents, you are not a child.

I do hate the idea of doing anything behind anyone’s back. It so much better to just be you, openly! But sometimes people are unreasonable and wont’t listen, so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with not making a show of it.

If you have come to this decision as a result of thought and prayer then I say go for it and be open about it with your parents! However, we are called to honor our parents and if you are wearing a bikini out of rebellion towards the rules your parents set when you were younger, I would take a serious look at your heart and determine if there is a bigger issue that you need to resolve before you worry about whether or not you should wear a certain kind of swim suit. Either way, don’t hide it from your parents. Be open about the fact that you don’t believe it to be sinful and that your decision does not change your relationship with God or with them, as far as you are concerned. Once you are sure that your heart is in the right place, go find the cutest suit out there and rock it!
