I’m in 8th grade this year and am transitioning into high school next year. I am so nervous for next year. I’m worried about classes, organization, managing school and sports and relationships. Do you have any tips for high school and my transition from middle school? (to make it more stressful I’m picking my classes for next year in a few weeks)

Thank you 🙂

Hi there! High school senior speaking, so I totally remember making that transition. I want to comment that it’s not as scary as you might think! On the social front, I noticed that high school is much easier. People are less catty than they are in middle school. People get more caught up in their own stuff, so while drama can happen, it’s reduces. Also, there’s less of an age divide. You’ll have electives with everyone, so you’ll be able to interact with anyone else in school without worrying about someone a grade above you being too old or anything.
Classes! Take electives you know you’ll like. Seriously, I know some will seem like an easy A, but you’ll be so bored and it’ll be hard to motivate yourself for the little work there is. So go ahead and take that Newswriting or Art or Drama class or whatever it is you’re worried about. Also, if you REALLY love a core class, like in my case, English and History, see if you have an honors or AP program. It’ll put you in a really focused, enthusiastic environment with other people who are really positive about the subject, and the discussions are way more in-depth.
Don’t take an honors class because you think you have to. If you hate the subject, don’t do it.
As for balancing clubs and life and school… decide. If you think you need a lot of downtime to be with your friends or do homework or be alone, only do maybe one or two activities. IF your friends are all super-active, or you like to stay busy, go ahead and do more. But don’t overwork and burn yourself out there.
ALSO: The whole “if you forget a pencil YOU GET DETENTION,” / “No name = NO CREDIT” etc in high school rhetoric that your middle school teachers probably scared you with when you messed up? 90% of the time they were lying. Don’t be too afraid of the teachers. Unless you get a particularly icky person who happens to be a teacher, they’re pretty cool, normal people most of the time. Some of my personal heroes and inspirations are teachers I’ve had.

Oh good, I’m glad! It’s a weird change, but it hopefully won’t be a bad one. Best of luck!
