Pianist 4 Christ
So I have been thinking about this for a while. Lately when I have been praying, I run out of things to say. I looked up what to do and I found that I was only praying with my understanding, not my spirit. I learned more about praying in tongues, and I figured I would give it a try. However, I was really scared. I know I had no reason to be, and I wasn’t necessarily scared that it wouldn’t work. Just the whole idea of The Holy Spirit empowering my spirit to speak directly to God, without my understanding of what I was saying, was a little scary. Anyhow, I tried it. My heart was racing even harder than it does when I run (and I’m no runner!) and I was only able to pray for a few seconds. It was a new feeling that I had not ever felt before. I didn’t know what I was saying, but I knew what to say. It felt powerful, but I only said what felt like two or three phrases.

Hello! I am simply amazed at the fact that you can pray in tongues… How did you do it? I am trying to but it never works. For being less scared, let me share a few tips (these work even when you are not praying). Take a few deep breaths, and understand that God will help you through it. Then try to clear your mind and keep breathing deeply and you should be good to go!

Oh thank you so much! I looked it up and found that several people would pray that the Holy Spirit would give them the gift of tongues, then take a leap of faith and just start making sounds and let the Holy Spirit give them the words to say. I’ve also heard it helps to have worship music on loud with earbuds and be alone so you won’t be self conscious and just pray. Thank you so much again for your tips!

Hello Pianist! I myself speak in tongues, and very often. Just about everywhere I go and am by myself, I whisper my prayer in tongues…in lunch lines, stores, while I’m outside… so you can pray in tongues just about anywhere if you wish, not only during the time you spend with God.
In any case, I received the gift of tongues when I was Baptized in the Holy Spirit ( this is different from just getting saved or being water baptized fyi ). You may have to do some research if you don’t know about it. One mistake I made was that I didn’t use the gift of tongues for a while. It’s good to pray in your prayer language, so don’t neglect the gift. Pray in tongues often.
I have a link to another thread about my Holy Spirit Baptism, if you’d like to read it.
God bless you sister!

I just learned that my grandmother would pray in tongues. I’m sorry if I sould blunt but, how is it done, what happens? Do I still have to take spanish if I can speak in tongues. Growing up in a southern baptist Church. No one told me that that is still possible today, intill I asked my mom about it 2 days ago.
