In light of the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina which was spurred by racist hatred, community leaders are calling for the removal of the confederate flag.

How do you feel about this? Is the confederate flag a symbol of racism or history?

I think it’s time to remove it. Yes, I understand that the Civil War was not as black and white (sorry, no pun intended!) as the North being the good guys and the South being the bad guys. I also know that the Civil War wasn’t fought solely because of slavery.
But had the confederate states won and seceded from the Union, America would have been severely weakened and quite possibly taken over by a larger country at some point.

Basically, I don’t see a point in having the confederate flag. To anyone out there who disagrees with this, why do you like the confederate flag, and why do you want to keep it?

What do you mean by “keep the confederate flag”? Is there a state that is keeping it? I am confused. Please post a news article describing it. THanks! 😀

I think that it shouldn’t be so popular anymore. It’s not just about racism, but it’s also been considered a symbol of rebellion, and I don’t see why it’s necessary. Regardless of who won or lost the war, we are once again an united people and shouldn’t have a symbol such as that separating us. There are enough divisions in the world, we don’t need more.

Here’s a relative of Robert E Lee, saying everything I’ve been wanting to: https://www.facebook.com/criticaldarlings/posts/10153056836972842?pnref=story

Dylann Roof wanted o start another race war, but instead brought racial unity. He wanted to turn Blacks and Whites against each other, but instead we’re (for the most part) leaning on each other now more than ever.

To continue to fly the Confederate Flag is a slap in the face to Blacks and offensive to non-racist Whites.

Caroline~I think one reason some people like the confederate flag is *because* it’s a symbol of rebelling. At least that’s the feeling I get when I’m around one of my friends who’s into the whole “Southern Rebel” thing. Idk what she’s rebelling against (actually, she may not know either, I doubt she actually wants to secede from the union :P) it probably just sounds cool to her. Definitely not a good enough reason to keep the flag though!

BrokenVessel~Thanks for sharing! That was a great post (yours and his 🙂 )
