Girl to Girl Talk: Hair Chalk, Pointy Nails and More of 2013’s Hottest Trends!

Every week I go through the “Girl Talk” section of Project Inspired and look for those seeking advice and council. I want to help answer some questions you may have about living out your Christian life and walk of faith! We want PI to be a safe place where you can ask questions.

This week’s post is a little different! I was inspired by a PI Girl who asked about a current trend: Hair chalk.

Has anyone here chalked their hair? How’d it turn out? How did you like it? Do you have any tips on how to do it? Is there any difference between chalking blonde hair and other colors? Were there any negative effects? What colors look best?

See the whole post here.

Hair chalk is just one of the big beauty fads of 2013. Here are five of the year’s hottest trends…have you tried any of them?!

1. Hair chalk: You simply pick your color, chalk it on and you get cool colors in your hair! This look is good for the rockers at heart, or if you want to go for a more fun, artsy or edgy look. Also, hair chalk is easy to apply and washes out in the shower. Make sure if you ever want to chalk or color your hair that you run it by your folks first. What do you think: Do you like the hair chalk trend?

2. Pointy nails and nail art: We’ve all seen the pointy nail trend worn by artists like Rihanna and Adele, and we wanted to get YOUR opinion! Do you like the sharp nail look, or is it too much? I personally like nail art–like polka dots and cute designs–but pointy nails seem a little “too much” to me. What do you think about nail art, girls? I think it’s a fun and modest way to spruce up your look!

3. Lots of rings and accessories: Do you like wearing a lot of jewelry or do you like a simple, classic look? I personally LOVE jewelry–the bigger, the better! I like simple, classy looks too, but rings, bracelets and necklaces are just too much fun to pass up!

4. Bright lipstick: Are you a girl who likes to wear lipstick or lip gloss? Personally, I love lip gloss and more of a nude, creamy pink on the lips, but this new red lipstick trend is really fun and eye-catching. The reds, hot pinks and even bright oranges are SO in this season…shake it up with some color! (Just make sure it is cool with your parents–and don’t go overboard.)

5. Patterns on pants: Patterns, florals and wild prints are in. Do you like patterns? Here is a little fashion tip if you do step out wearing cool patterns: Make sure you balance out the pattern with a solid color or plain article of clothing opposite it. You don’t want to overdo the look by making it too busy. The media will tell you otherwise this season; you may get away with multiple patterns, but make sure they blend well together.

Project Inspired girls, what do YOU think about the latest trends? Which of these is your favorite? Which is your least favorite? Comment below! We love you, girls!

The only trend here that I’ve given notice to is the hair chalk trend. I’ve actually known about it for a year. And since I enjoy art and my mom got me chalk pastels, I use them(they work really well). But I’m in summer school now (not because I have to, I just want some extra credits) and the high school has a rule against any hair color that is not natural.

I own three pairs of patterned jeans and am definitely not finished collecting more! That’s my fave trend out of these 5, and I also think the hair chalk is cool. I love experimenting with different nail art trends, but I’d be afraid that I would take someone’s eye out w/ pointy nails like the ones above!

Out of all of these I only really like hair chalking. The only downside to it is that the chalk dries out your hair. So if you do do it then you need to make sure you condition it really well the next time you wash your hair. I also like nail art but I don’t like the pointy nails.

    1. Hair chalk: Although I haven’t tried that, and probably won’t, it does look cute!!
    2. No…how would you even do anything?!?
    3. Eh, if it’s done right, it can look ok,but otherwise it just looks tacky…
    4. I love some bright lipstick! But only certain colors…
    5. Some patters, yes! Very cute! 🙂

I do the hair chalking all the time and it’s great! So far I haven’t had any negative effects, and it washes out perfectly with one wash! 😀
Not to crazy about the nails, pants, or bright lips. But I always have tons of bracelets on. I love the friendship bracelets that either a friend gives to me or I buy on a trip.

I don’t know if its just me but I hate all these things but the hair chalks are ok…..I’m just not that kinda girl

Tee-hee I LOVE hair chalking. But I have been using pastels instead of the stuff you buy specifically for your hair, cause I already had them.
Pointed nails look like claws, in my opinion. I don’t mind them, but I’m not a huge fan.
I LOVE brightly colored lip stick/lipgloss, and I’m all for bright/weird colors, except green and yellow. That’s just too weird for me.
I have only really found one pair of patterned pants that I’d be comfortable wearing, because they’d be awfully hard to match with, but I love it when someone who has a chance to put more forethought into wearing them manages to pull it off. It’s cute. 🙂

    1. I think it’d be cute in a ponytail, but not all over the ends!
    2. Tacky. The pointy nails are just…tacky. And most nail art is too in my opinion…(there is some stuff like fades I like though. Or a flower on ur thumb or simple little things like that.)
    3. Depends on how they do it. Cant really say since theres so many ways to do it wrong, but if done right is so amazing.
    4. Other than the bright pink, I think its awesome! (infact, right now I have on a bright coral glass balm xD) and I just love it.
    5. I think it depends as well. There’s some pants where I’m like “No. Just toally no” but I’m even wearing a pair right now where it has little grey roses on the light blue fabric and they are SO CUTE. So, it just depends. xD

Sorry, I’m a fashion diva, so I have to be critical. xD

Love them all (except for the pointy nail one, which requires $50 and constant trips to a salon for manicures.) I have been wanting to dye my hair lavender or bright neon blue, and now I can use Hair Chalk to do it (partially)! (Now to find some that stays in for a while, but washes out after a couple of wears! 😛 )

I must say, I’m going to have to hit up Forever 21 for jewelry to layer, and find a cute pair of printed pants to rock. I just adore this trend so much!!

well I am very traditional in my views and think that god doesn’t want his children dressed in a worldy fashion, I suppose that you could say we are to be in the world and not of it. also I think that how you dress, the jewellery you wear etc…. reflects your heart, and bright hair colours and pointy nails(A)reflect a need to fit in with the world and (B)reflect a rebellious heart. I am sorry if I have caused offense, these are my personal views, and whilst you may not share them, this is what I have found in gods word. I do however really like this website 🙂 🙂

I like the hair chalk and the many accessories. The other ones are just “too much” for me. Also, not super super girly so would probably hurt myself with those nails lol 😛

I looove bright lipstick. But only in red and certain shades of pink. So I got some bright red lipstick for pretty cheap at Wal-Mart. I loved it to death; my parents didn’t, but they didn’t forbid me from wearing it. They just really hated it.
On Easter Sunday, I did some laundry so that I’d have some clothes to wear because I was going to Florida the next morning. I opened the dryer and looked inside, horrified to see that all my clothes had bright red stains everywhere. As I was taking my clothes out, planning on spraying them, I found an empty tube of lipstick lying in the corner of the dryer. I soon figured out that I had accidentally left it in the pocket of my jeans and while it was fine in the washing machine, it basically exploded in the dryer. Though my dad worked for hours to get the stains out so I’d have clothes there, my parents were both happy that my bright lipstick was gone. (I had another tube that was darker that they were OK with and I went back to Wal-Mart to get more. So I have four tubes.)

Hairchalk – I actually bought a set of soft pastels and chalked my hair the other day! It looks great! ^^ only $2.66 at Micheal’s with a coupon!

Ponity nails? – LOVE IT! Im a big fan of doing my nails, but sadly since I play the guitar I have to have them short. Ive loved it since 2NE1 did it.

Lots of accessories – has to be done right. That pic looks a bit sloppy.

Bright lips – been doing it for years now. LOVE.

Prints – I have a sick pair of harem pants with an 80’s kind of inspired black and white print. In other words, done right love as well!

PS. Thanks for doing this! I LOVE fashion soo much, and I like that you have pointed out some great trends. ^^

I don’t like pointy nails; they kind of remind me of cat claws :/ I LOVE any kind of lip balm or gloss. I have a bright red lipstick that I use for shows and performing and love playing around with it at times 😀 Never tried hair-chalking…I shall now 😀

Pretty much the only trend on here that I would even CONSIDER trying, would the hair chalk and bright RED lipstick. (Not neon orange or something out there like that.) I tend to lean more towards sophisticated and even minimalistic. I lean towards dark browns, blacks, whites, creams, and subtle reds more often than I go for bright colors. I really don’t like the patterns on pants, or the bulky jewelry. Like I said, I go for delicate, minimalistic, and subtle. None of which fits most of these…

I love the hair chalk and think it looks really fun to try. I like the patterned nails, but not how pointy they are. I like a lot of jewelry, too. I also LOVE patterned pants. I have 2 pairs and everytime I wear my floral ones I get a TON of compliments. 🙂

How do you chalk your hair? It looks really awesome!

    • HisPrincess56

      Posted by HisPrincess56 on April 28, 2013 at 07:30

You get a small section (the one you want colored) wet and then rub the chalk over it. Then you dry it with a hair dryer, and to make it look shinier and seal it in, you flatten it with a flat iron, or curl it with a curling iron. There are a lot of videos on youtube showing how to do this!! 🙂

I like the hair chalking~what do you buy to “chalk” your hair??

    • HisPrincess56

      Posted by HisPrincess56 on April 28, 2013 at 07:28

You can buy any normal sidewalk chalk, or I think its called oil pastels or something? The normal chalk doesn’t work as well though, and some places like Urban Outfitters and Free People sell chalk made specially for chalking your hair!!

Posted by GigiJR on March 25, 2013 at 20:02

    1. I’d never heard of hair chalk before, but I love the idea. I might try it!
    2. Pointy nails. Err, I don’t really like them, but if I saw someone bold enough to wear them I’d respect them. I don’t really do anything with my nails. I’ll sometimes paint them, but then I pick at them & they look really bad.
    3. I think lots of jewelry looks cool, but I would probably not wear it. I think I look funny wearing rings & bracelets. I usually just wear a necklace.
    4. I love the bright lipstick look. I don’t actually own or wear any makeup, but if I did, bright lipstick would be a must!
    5. I really want a pair of patterned skinny jeans. I have grey, blue, red, & white ones, but I’d love to have a floral pair.

I really like the hair chalking! The idea for a temporary, inexpensive hair dye is brilliant! I was going to do it, but I tried Kool-Aid dye instead. I also love the idea of lipstick, but not that bright of colors. I will sometimes use a tinted Burt’s Bees chap stick, but I moistly use pink lip gloss.

  23. KPriorify

Posted by KPriorify on March 25, 2013 at 17:54

    1. Hair chalk, maybe, but it when I see people with chalk or dyed hair, I think they’re insecure and need to put on a fake look to feel pretty. And that’s not healthy.
    2. Pointy nails look creepy and spinster-like. Plus, I’m a really sporty girl, they would chip and break really quickly. Nail polish is always fun though, just don’t go so crazy that your can’t even find a outfit to match them with.
    3. Jewelry it fun, but again not too much.
    4. Bright lipstick like orange, purple, yellow or green is a definite no for me, but bright red is good under certain circumstances.
    5. I’m still trying to get used to neon colored pants! Nevermind patterns on them, but just keep in mind, it’s takes a lot of thought to pull them off. A little too much thought for me, I’m a pretty laid back girl when it comes to clothes… Thanks for reading

I love the hair chalk idea! I love nail art too!!! I just french manicured my toes and fingers! I like the pointy nails if they’re short. I wouldn’t get them though because I’d probably poke someone’s eye out cause I’m kind of a klutz :)The bright lipstick just isn’t for me… lol I wear peachy and nude colors usually but if I dress up I do red. I would totally wear floral pants IF I could pull them off :p lol I don’t exactly have the legs for skinny floral pants haha But I think they’re totally cute!

Woops! Forgot about the jewelry! I like it sometimes but big jewelry irritates and distracts me so I just wear rubber bracelets and just don’t wear rings.

  26. PolkaDot

Posted by PolkaDot on March 25, 2013 at 12:32

I don’t like the pointy nails. The hair chalk is a cute idea but I wouldn’t do it. Not so big on the lots of braclets and rings thing or the BRIGHT lipstick. But the printed pants are cool! But I would like little polkadots on mine. Plus it is really hard to find printed and colored jeans that aren’t skinny jeans. (I don’t wear skinny jeans.)

My favorite trend is hair chalking and the bright lipgloss/lipstick! I’m going to try and chalk my hair after I get it cut shorter. Also I use the Babylips cherry chap stick, which stains your lips red 😀

I don’t like the pointy nails though… They’re a little too “out there”
