Girl to Girl Talk: The Danger of Wearing Emotional Masks & the Power of Confession!

Every week, I go through the “Girl Talk” section of Project Inspired and look for those seeking advice and counsel. I want to help answer some questions you may have about living out your Christian life and walk of faith! We want PI to be a safe place where you can ask questions.

A PI Girl recently emailed me and told me how some of the “Girl to Girl Talk” articles are impacting her life and helping her. She shared her personal story and testimony on her past and the things God has healed and delivered her from. She also wrote about some of the things God revealed to her about Him being her only source and rock. The email was so powerful that I wanted to share the message with you, PI Girls, because I think you will be blessed and also impacted.

Wearing Masks Over Pain

We all go through different struggles, battles and temptations. God knows our shortcomings and knows our innermost thoughts and needs (Psalm 139). Sometimes, though our pain or struggle can be so hard, we tend to cover up our hurts or issues and wear a mask such as a smile. This PI Girl was expressing how much it hurt her to wear this falseness, this mask that she was okay, when inside she was suffering.

We need to lay down our burdens at the foot of the cross because Christ carried our burdens, sin, shame, guilt and even others’ transgressions…we need to let go and let God (Matthew 11:28). We need to not fight the battle ourselves (2 Chronicles 20:15). How do we do this? Through prayer, and by not dwelling on the past or rehearsing the worst, but by thinking of positive things and what Jesus Christ did on the cross.

This is what the Lord says to you: Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (2 Chronicles 20:15)

Turn From the Old to the New

Sometimes in life, letting go is hard. Sometimes we need to confess our sins and TURN from them. The word repent means “to turn” or to change direction. We cannot keep walking on the same path if we want change or different results, amen? That sometimes means breaking up with a boyfriend who you know isn’t the best for you, or letting go of a friend who is toxic or misleading you, or letting go of unforgiveness or bitterness. We need to forgive ourselves and others; otherwise we will be in bondage to sin and to shame, guilt and unforgiveness, which is exactly what the enemy or Prince of the power of the air wants! (Ephesians 2:2)

…In which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (Ephesians 2:2)

Here is the PI Girl talking about masking her pain:

“It comes from a childhood of getting in trouble and being fearful and uncomfortable when I cry, and it went from childhood to young adulthood. Crying is something hard because after years of not being able to, I can’t express pain or sorrow. So I’m not 100% healed.”

But forget all that—it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. (Isaiah 43:18)

Power in Prayer, Faith and Confession

Even though this PI Girl went through hard times, she put her trust in God and is going through the healing process. Sometimes we don’t get instant results or instant answers—but there is POWER in faith, in confession and in prayer! PI Girls, if you want proof, read Nicole’s book, Into the Light! My friend Elvina (a prayer warrior) and I prayed for Nicole for her healing, which was very serious at the time…and God heard our cry. It was not easy, and Nicole still went through tremendous suffering and a scary situation on many occasions, but by the GRACE OF GOD, He listened and He touched her.

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

God is the true healer, life giver, redeemer, source, Father, friend, love and true salvation. Jesus died on the cross for all of our sins, illnesses, disease, pain and suffering (God spoke in the Old Testament that He would send the Messiah who would save the people). Jesus was the ULTIMATE sacrifice and lamb (John 1:29). He takes our burdens, pains, transgressions and iniquities. The blood of Jesus gives us life. Just like you have blood in your veins, there is a price for sin. Sin leads to death, disease, harm, destruction…BUT the good news is Jesus paid it all at Calvary!

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (James 5:16)

The PI Girl continues to write:

“I’m at a constant battle with the sinful desires and what is actually pleasing to God… I know how many girls suffer behind wearing masks and covering pain, but the thing is, I’m still one who sometimes struggles. God is working on me slowly but surely as I stumble on this path, and God has to pick me up and hold me up on my feet…”

See, PI Girls—the struggle is real! While we are on earth, Jesus says, you willhave many trials, but take heart because He overcame the world! (John 16:33) Hallelujah! God overcomes so we overcome as His children! Don’t burden yourself with all the pain in the world, or your past or what man cannot give you. People will fail you…we all go through ups and downs, disappointments, loneliness, joy, peace, sorrow, temptation—we all go through this, but we are together in the fight, amen?

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

We are all in God’s army as believers of Jesus Christ! When you are with God, who then can be against you? (Romans 8:31) You might ask, “What should I do when I feel weak or discouraged?” You need to read the Word when you feel weak, confess when you fall down and God will pick you back up. He loves you soooo much, girls! Never forget that God doesn’t hold records of wrongs when you believe in Jesus (He takes your place). It is as if you never, ever sinned! That is crazy grace, amen? God shall be honored, exalted and praised—not only because He loves us, but because how GREAT IS OUR GOD?!

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)

“God brought me to a place in my life where he took away everything I clung to, and showed me he’s the only solid rock foundation I can stand in….” —Anonymous PI Girl

PI Girls, you are NOT alone! I love how this girl opened up and shared about her experience. We ALL struggle, we ALL go through trials and tribulations. The good news is…YOU ARE NOT ALONE! God is with you first and foremost, and so is the PI community!

Hi Cristi!! First i just wanted to thank you for all of the advice that you share with us on PI!! I find it beneficial in my christian walk! It’s hard for me talk about this, but i feel comfortable with expressing how i really feel on here. I struggle with being hateful and mean. I know this one of the things God has told us to put away for good, but it seems like no matter what i always resort back to those negative attitudes. Im the sweetest person you’ll ever meet, but i just dont understand why i battle with those negative emotions. Everytime i try to change, i always end up back tracking:-(. What can i do to bring about real change, and put away this negativity for good?

Everyday I put on a mask. I hide how I really am from the people around me because I’m afraid of what the people around me think, What if they are disappointed? I hate to disappoint. I can’t tel you how exhausting and sad it makes me feel. Smiling on the outside. Screaming and balling my eyes out on the inside. I really need to learn how to have a genuine smile. I just haven’t got there yet. Hopefully I will soon, though,

I find it ironic that this was shown to me today because last night at girls study, one girl asked if there was anything we really were having problems with. A couple girls were bitter towards others, but I was bitter towards myself because of things I did before and even a little after I was saved. It seemed like everyone around me was perfect in nature but I wasn’t. Last night reminded me that we all have things wrong with us and it’s okay. As long as we trust God to help and help Him help us, we can get through anything. Sometimes you just need to be honest thar you’re having a hard time.

I can relate so much to this it’s CRAZY!!! I feel sometimes that it’s hard to let myself to be vulnerable and confess I need help or guidance. Sometimes it seems like it is easier for me to wear the emotional mask, but at the end of the day I can hide my pain from others but not God. He is eternal and always there for us. I forget that I don’t have to carry my burdens alone. God will help us through anything. This really made me see my personal struggle in a different light. Thank you so much for posting. God Bless 😀
