Christian Life

It’s Been a Rough _______.

Fill in the blank with whatever you want – day, week, month, year. Let’s face it, sometimes life is just rough! We all have bad days and go through rough periods in our lives. Maybe it’s been a bad day at school, maybe things are difficult at home or maybe, like me, you’re just going through a time when it feels really hard to hear God speaking to you.

Whatever the reason, here are some scriptures to remember when you’re just feeling down:

Deuteronomy 31:8 – The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

Romans 5:5 – And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.

Psalm 119:116 – Lord, sustain me as you promised, that I may live! Do not let my hope be crushed.

Hebrews 4:16 – So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

These are just a few verses to encourage you, there are tons more. I hope that these help to bless you this week if you’re going through a rough time. I know they’ve helped me.

“May these be a light for you in dark places, when all other lights go out” –Galadriel, Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring.

Is there a specific scripture that you turn to when things get really hard? Please share them here!

My mom doesn’t have a job right now. She’s single and my dad doesnt send me much to help out. Its just hard watching her struggle so much. I try to do without as much as possible but i still feel like there is really nothing i can do for her but pray. :'( sometimes i feel like im a burden. its the closest ive come to ever wishing i wasnt alive. but it would only hurt her 100x worse. I content myself with reading these verses, praying, and pushing myself to do the best I can in school. Someday i will have a great job and give her everything she wants, even if she couldnt do the same for me. Thank you so much for this site & all the verses you are all posting! no matter what you are going through, Christ can carry you and your family through! <3 :')

Yes He can!! Keep praying, grab strength, and God will help you in all your ways. Just lean on him for understanding, and He will help you through this. My mom too was always struggling while I was growing up- and it in turn made me a stronger person!

As I sit here staring at this page, all I can think is that I’d be filling that blank with the word “year.” Honestly, I could probably stretch it to “three years” if I thought back far enough to other events.

    *sigh*

Thanks for posting this! I have gone through so much! My family and I had a house fire on January 31, 2010. My parents and myself went to Haiti the same year as a Missions trip with a few students from my school. We later found out that we didn’t have it bad at all. As you can imagine. They are so happy with so little. 1/3 of the house is still there. Some things survived, including our pets, and everyone was fine, so it’s alright. I have dealt with depression and being picked on in elementary school. I have since then gone to a Christian school for a few years.

God is’nt the God of Coincidence, He’s the God of Time.

Me myself dont get into rough times much any more. cause i can look forward and thats what i learned over the past week or 2 and like Herbrews 4:16 (So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.) See we can look forward and bad times will be over and good will come we just have to trust in the lord. then like hard work like yard work that gets exosting, it will be over. But then in the mean time trust in the lord that he’ll help you and give you strangth and energy and that he’ll help you get the job done. or any situation. My spelling may be off, i’m only 12 and sorry if i repeat some things over i get carried away cause it all leads to another to another.

Thank you for posting this and by the way psalm 119:116 fit in with this 😀

this year has been kind of rough on me because my school year was going really bad, i got a job(which was a good thing) but some of the stuff that came with the job wasn’t good. one of my coworkers got fired:( i feel like my parents dont listen to me very much, even when i try to explain whats gong on, i have felt depression, i felt fat so i skipped many meals trying to lose weight. i was in rebellion with my parents. i have tried to follow God cause i know he is the only way i wont got to hell, but its been tough because there is a boy i like and i feel he wont like me if i am a christain, cause he isnt. when i got onto facebook and clicked on this, all of these verses helped me! there is one verse, i dont know where in the bible it is,but i love it, it means that God will never leave you or never forsake you. everytime i read it, i smile because when i feel alone because nobody is listening or something bad is going on, i know God will always be there to help me get through what it is i need to get through. 😀

Reading these verses everyone’s posting on here is very inspirational to me <3 I've had some days where I've just felt like a complete disappointment to my parents, my family, my piano teacher and God, and there was one night where I was just lying in my bed and started to cry. I got my MP3 player and had it on shuffle, and while I was lying there crying, Yours To Hold by Skillet came on, and those tears of disappointment turned into tears of peace and contentment, because I KNEW that that was God's way of telling me that He was there for me, and every time I hear that song I can tell that God is with me <3 Also, a verse that I hold close to my heart is Psalm 139:9-10 "If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea; even there Your hand will guide me. Your right hand will hold me fast."

This is one of my many favorites, some are above too! “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the LORD’s praise, for he has been good to me.” Psalm 13: 5-6 Thank you very much for this article, I feel that things have not been going so well for me as of late, and this was very helpful for me. Thank you again!

You don’t know how much this has helped me today. I was having just one of the worst days I’ve had in a long time, and being a teenage girl, even normal days are stressful. From one thing to another, the smallest things seemed to be adding up one on top of the other, and I guess I really did overreact.

I keep a scripture on a dry erase board right on my wall beside my bed that I write a weekly scripture and my inspirational verse to me, which is Isaiah 33:2- O LORD, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress. And this week’s verse is Song 4:7- All beautiful you are, my darling; there is no flaw in you.

My favorite verse, especially when I go on a trial with faith, is 1 Corinthians 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary but what is unseen is eternal.

A couple of years ago, when going through a really low point in my life, I began compiling an ongoing list of scriptures to get me through the hard times and give me hope for the morning ahead. What I found that helped is that I took these scriptures and have an ongoing wall of sticky notes above my bed that remind me of God’s love that gives me hope.

Here are some of them (Sorry for how incredibly long this is, it’s just incredibly hard to pick which were the best to post, so I’m posting a lot of them =P)…

-Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12)

-He says, “Be still, and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:10)

-I am quick to follow your commands, because you have set my heart free. (Psalm 119: 32)

-For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. (1 Peter 1:23)

-I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1-2)
-God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence,” The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6)
-He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit. (Psalm 147: 3-5)

-Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8: 1-2)

-The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27: 1-3)

-And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.(Romans 8:28)

-If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)

-For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

-Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)

And my favorite because it shows how incredible God’s love is for us…

    – Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? (James 4:5)

Katie- Thank you so, so much for sharing these with us!! these scriptures really encouraged me as I know they will to other girls! I love “Be still, and know that I am God.” and “If God is for us who can be against us?” So powerful!!

This day kind of stunk. Sometimes I just feel like I don’t have any friends at school. I was new this year and after nine months I still feel awkward and lonely at school events. When I’m having a rough time, I usually listen to Christian music and relax and read.

This was the passage I memorized for my Confirmation: “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Revelation 2:10

Desiree- thank you for this powerful scripture, I haven’t heard this in a long time. It’s so true that we go through some hard obstacles and the devil tries to tempt us constantly and pull us away from God, but if we remember this scripture it makes it easier to realize they are only temporary problems and obstacles!

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31

It’s been a rough school year, but God got me through it.

(Matthew 11:28) Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

(1 Peter 5:7) Cast all your care on him, for he cares for you. Let Him have all your worries and cares, for He is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you.

    • Posted by Nicole on June 9, 2011 at 11:38

I’m so sorry Kat. Going through that is something that is beyond rough, and I am praying for you. There is a reason their getting separated, maybe God has a different plan for each of them. Continue praying, and God will help you through it. He’s with you every step of the way!

Zephaniah 3:17- The Lord your God is with you; he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

You have no idea how this helped me today. Everything seemed to be going wrong in my life, and I didn’t have anyone to talk to, all my friends have troubles of there own, and they always come to me when they need someone to talk to, but I don’t really have anyone that I could go to, and I’m sure they don’t want to have to listen to all my troubles, then finally things were starting to be ok, I joined a youth group, the youth minister was understanding, and so easy to talk to, he was just what I needed, and I felt that finally with some help I may be able to get back to where I needed to be with God. Then today he sent an email to everyone in the youth group saying he had resigned today, it came at the worse possible time. Right when I was just starting to trust him and be able to talk to him. It felt like my life was falling apart, everything seemed so much worse. I sat down and just cried, I needed someone to talk to, I went on Facebook just to find that my closest friend had a bunch of crap happening and every post I read seemed to make it worse, I went to my room and started lessening to the radio hoping for something that would help. All it was, was silly little girls singing about this that and the other, not very helpful. I went back to my computer and clicked into Project Inspired, and this was the top post. I read the verses and I started to understand that I will always have God, even if I can’t talk to anyone here on Earth. I just want to say Thank you so much for posting this today. You have really helped me.

    • Posted by Nicole on June 9, 2011 at 11:36

Jessica- I know exactly how you feel, because I go through the same thing! The best thing you can do is to tell your friends you are there for them, but that you have troubles of your own too and can’t always help them. You are so right that God is always with you, continue praying- there’s a reason for all of this. I’m so happy you saw this article, keep coming back- I guarantee we’ll continue to inspire you each and every day 🙂
