Modest Is Hottest: Allison Williams Is Beautiful in Baroque and We Give One Star a Makeover!

Ladies, this week’s “Modest Is Hottest” post offers up some unique examples of modest style for Christian girls. If you’re looking for modesty tips as well as examples of what’s considered immodest, then this post is for you. I hope you enjoy them.

So let’s get to it!

Mila-Kunis

Mila Kunis

I know it’s Mila Kunis again, but she’s been rocking some amazing, modest dresses lately. I love this one–I think the design is so unique, definitely modest and surprisingly enchanting!

Allison-Williams

Allison Williams

This baroque-patterned dress is the perfect example of modesty. From the cap sleeves and round neck to the length, it proves that modest style can be feminine and elegant!

Sophia-Bush

Sophia Bush

Not only is this an awesome color, but the one-shoulder design and soft flowy material is very Greek goddess-ish. I love the belt that wraps around the waist.

Selena-Gomez

Selena Gomez

While I do love the turquoise color, sparkly sequins and fun neckline of this dress, I’m concerned about the immodest peek-a-boo sides and the open back (which you can’t see in this pic). The length is also short. Do you agree, girls?

Poll

Which of our three modest looks is your favorite?

The length doesn’t bother me- it’s just the sides on Selena’s dress.

    Girls, I understand the Modest is Hottest post concerns. Both sides. But, I will say that I personally know people who show half of their bodies and think nothing is wrong with it. So, the last picture can be helpful for those who haven’t defined modesty for themselves. And, that being said, as someone below said, modesty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone must do what they feel is right, knowing that they will be accountable for their actions later on. But, let’s continue to love on celebrities, and love on each other. PI is awesome and thank you all for honestly sharing your thoughts. ;}

Wow, umm, Sophia’s dress does not seem very modest to me. I think that it is very beautiful, but as soon as I looked at it I realized that the top is transparent! Very disappointing for such a gorgeous dress! I wish that it had a few more layers of fabric to the top.

So, this doesn’t relate to the dresses here, but I have a great way to turn a strapless dress, that’s immodest in the chest area, and make it modest and stylish! Now you have to make sure it matches, but wear a plain t-shirt under the dress. Make sure it matches the dress, otherwise it looks REALLY bad! I have a black strapless dress, and it has pink bows on it and a pink neckline, and I pared it with a black tee shirt, and nobody noticed it was a shirt until I pointed it out! 😀 just throwing out some strapless advice 🙂

I have super high modesty standards, and I agree that Selena’s dress is not modest at all, but it gave me about a bajillion different ideas of how to MAKE it modest….haha. I love dresses one and three, and Selena’s dress too (add a shirt underneath and a skirt that was a bit longer, of course)!!! I like designing clothes, and these articles always give me new ideas, so keep it up!! Thanks!! 🙂

Ladies hold the comments for a moment and think. What if a girl who is not yet a Christian got on here looking for some answers about God and wants to see why Christians are so different. She reads the article, is impressed by how we are trying to glorify Him with our dress then reads the fight going on and just sees a bunch of girls who are no different than the rest of the world. We are supposed to be different than other girls and this is not different. We have bullied each other and it’s time to stop. If you want to sign the petition then sign it. No one should think any less of you. If you don’t want to, then don’t. No one should think any less of you then either. Please just stop. This is not how daughters of the King should act…

I think the first one is kinda pre-teen and the orange one isnt a very nice color, but i like the shape of it! Selena’s is kind of immodest but not as bad as a lot of the dresses shown here, I think the fact that her dress is high-necked and flowy makes it a little better.

Sorry if I posted this twice but I didn’t see my comment the first time if it got posted.

But Eurydice, I finally agree with you, although I never thought I would on this subject. I think tht it’s teaching us to be judgmental. The arguing in the comments always really brings me down too, because before I was a Christian I loved drama and controversy. So this bothers me, because as sisters in Christ, ladies, can’t we do better than this?

A lot of people see this topics differently though. To me, I see it as judging people which is very wrong! But that could just be where I am in my Christian walk. Some of you may be able to look at it and not judge. Then good for you! I seriously admire you if that’s the case.
But it kind of seems unfair to us who are convicted that this is wrong at the same time. Because we have to see it every week and feel forced to speak up about it.
Just because all of you who feel this is okay, I probably won’t sign the petition, because it’s your right to see it! Especially if you can do it without judging. Maybe us who don’t like it need to simply not click it.
I’m really not trying to offend anyone. But I do kind of feel “stuck” on what to do with this.

    Much Love,

    Natalie Noel

So, it’s okay for YOU to hold total strangers accountable for dressing in a way that YOU find inappropriate, but we, who read your work regularly are not allowed to hold you accountable?

You’ve taken away our voice in the polls, and my petition is giving it back. No more modest makeovers!

PI is supposed to be for the members, yes? The petition is about giving the members a unified voice (instead of a garbled string of comments) about what we’re seeing here. Signing the petition is just about communicating to the site that you think the last bit about immodesty is unnecessary. You don’t have to sign, but I just wanted to make the mission a bit more clear. <3

I actually really admire you doing this. I haven’t agreed with every thing you’ve said on this sight but when I first started noticing your comments I thought that it was great how you stand up for whatever you believe in, even if no one agrees with you, and you stick with it until people start to see what you mean. Thus a great quality to have 🙂
I’ll look into signing the petition.

I can honestly say that I thought I would never, ever agree with you on this, Eurydice. But I do now. Somebody said something about it being wrong to judge the celebs, which it is. I know that a lot of people will take these posts differently, but I think some of us take it as making us judgmental. Honestly, how many of us look at these posts and see the modest clothing and think about fashion ideas? And if we even do, And even if we do see that, there is so much controversy in the comments, which is bringing me down. Every time I see a modest is hottest in the comments, I think “oh, here is the arguing for the week.”
But Ladies, you are all entitled to reading these posts if you find nothing wrong with them. 🙂 so I probably won’t sign the petition, because there are so many opinions and stadards. We are all entitled to our opinion. And I know that so many different people see things differently. So maybe us who don’t like it should just stop clicking on it each week.

    Much love,

Guys, I know you are all saying what if she leaned over and such, but seriously, no one would let her go out there in that without skin tape holding it wear it is. Designers think of this stuff, and you can bet it was barely her choosing her own clothing for this. I mean the peeps who get her ready for this event make sure things like that can’t be seen. :/

    number 3 – no
number 4 – what was Selena thinking?! oops… there I go commenting on the modesty again… okay from here on out I wont comment on the modest.

To be honest, I really dislike the first and third. The point of these articles is to choose modest dresses that aren’t frumpy. Personally, I find them to be frumpy, but everyone has different opinions! Allison’s dress is stunning and she looks beautiful. I love Selena’s dress, and I think she looks awesome.

For once, I love ALL the dresses. I usually don’t like all the “modest picks”. 😛
I see nothing wrong with the fact that Selena’s dress is backless (Love me some backless…ness.), and it is most DEFINITELY not “too short”. Follows the fingertip rule just fine, so I don’t get what T.M’s length standards are…

The first dress… Aww man, I would love to wear that dress to prom!

I love seeing how you can look beautiful and fashionable, but not have to dress immodestly! Although, I, personally, don’t see why we need to look at an immodest dress. I would rather just see the cute modest ones! Does anyone know why it might be helpful seeing a bad example? I just am not seeing it, but it might just be me 🙂

Okay so I personally LOVE these posts! We get to see ways to dress nicely without being immodest and they have actually inspired me to dress differently than I would have otherwise. So, why can’t we focus on the positive that comes out of these posts. I can understand where you who disagree with them might be coming from, but as I am sure that it is not Nicole’s intent to offend and lives ARE impacted for the better from these posts, can’t we stand together as friends and sisters in Christ? “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” These fights are only Satans way of trying to discourage Nicole and us. Lets ignore him by standing together in Christ. Please girls?

That’s sweet, but it’s not enough just to “focus on the positive” when your heart tells you something isn’t right. Remaining silent or standing by and doing nothing is just as bad as participating or encouraging someone in their errors.

At the risk of furthering what I believe to be an unnecessary argument, let me just point out your statement: “Remaining silent or standing by and doing nothing is just as bad as participating or encouraging someone in their errors.” hmmmm. My thoughts exactly. Which is why the dress was featured in the first place. Your argument is based upon a premise of “to each her own” yet you say it’s wrong to stand by and let someone do wrong. You are contradicting yourself. Us not mentioning immodest dresses is, in your own words, “just as bad as participating.” As was previously mentioned (multiple times) the article in know way is harshly judging Selena, or classifying her as a terrible person, but simply focusing on the dress and the fact that it could cover a little more. If you are so big on letting people live by their own standards, THEN DON’T READ THE ARTICLES, and allow the other girls to read and take what they wish from them. Your entire string of comments is unnecessary and in all honesty, childish. “I will not be silent in the face of misogyny.” Really right now? I feel like this whole argument is less about the issue at all and more about you feeling better than everyone else on here, which is not the purpose of this website at all. The purpose is to facilitate spiritual growth and offer young women tools to walk in God’s ways. Look in the bible and you’ll find several instances of God saying just what you said above, that it is wrong to let your brother or sister sin. Not only is the article pointing out Selena’s mistake but helping countless other young women see the distinction between modest and immodest dress. This website and article are serving exactly their purpose, to serve the Lord. And your petty arguments and “petitions” are drawing the focus away from that Holy goal and onto you and your holier-than-art-thou attitude based upon your feminist views. You are distracting these young ladies from their reason for being here because of your need for attention. That is simply selfish and immature. Once again, if you have an issue with the content of the article, don’t read it. If you have an issue with the entire purpose of this website then you have my prayers because this is a fantastic forum for Godly discussion and reflection, which I consider to be a very noble purpose. Correction: you have my prayers anyway, I pray that you hold the Lord close to you heart, I pray that you look to the word for guidance and find the errors in your thoughts, I pray that you find your self worth in God and not the amount of argumentative posts you can write, I pray that you not let the differing opinions of your sisters in Christ (myself included) drive you away from the Lord, and I pray that He fill your heart with understanding of why the immodesty piece is necessary. This isn’t about you, or me, it’s about God and his commandments for our lives and the role that clothing should play in it. So I simply ask for an end to the distracting comments as well as an end to the amount of attention that we allow the comments to grab. Our attention should be focused upwards, on Him. God bless you.

It shows right into her boob area and also shows way to much of her back. now you may think that I’m judging her but i’m not! All i’m saying is that her dress could use a bit of a makeover. Now, i want to say to those who think Nicole is saying these women are bad because they dont meet here standards, shes not. Same here Meghan. Shattered and Clare, she has been going downhill fast. She was in a movie that was totally NOT appropriate RIGHT after her Disney show ended. She should know that thousands of little girls look up to her and she should give them a good example to look up to. I agree that just because she wore an immodest does not mean she’s a bad person. However she has been not the greatest role model for the thousands of little girls that love her lately.

Posted by HurricaneMurphGirl on March 4, 2013 at 23:23

I really liked Mila’s dress. It was so gorgeous! I liked the funky fabric and the amazing cut. Allison’s dress was really pretty too. It was slim fitting without looking uncomfortable. It was classy and snazzy, and really looked good on her. I thought the last one was… well, not my style. It looked almost frumpy to me, and I wasn’t a fan of the color. But I mean, that’s just my personal opinion. The dress isn’t ugly or anything, it’s just not me.

Now I really need to say this again, I would really like it if you would stop posting the ‘makeover’ part of these articles. It feels very much, at least to me, that you’re holding other people to standards they haven’t chosen to uphold. It should be their own personal decision whether or not they choose to wear what we might call ‘immodest.’ And it feels like you’re just opening the door for girls to say rude things about the immodest dresses. Which have seen before. I think we should focusing more on encouraging and uplifting us by showing us other women who chose to dress in a way that we enjoy instead of showing us people who don’t. Maybe you should do a poll to see what the majority says about this…

If we neglect to tell people what they’re doing to hurt people, we are just as sinful and the bible says so. So take your feministis, drama-causing posts elsewhere.

Are you serious? You are demonizing the rest of us who have the sense to not show off our bodies, which makes women look like toys for conniving dog-like men to leer at. Is that what you want? For young girls like me to think that being a toy is acceptable? Heck, even encouraged? That’s disgusting.

You are continuing to base your conclusions on misinterpretations. Just because a young women was featured here wearing an immodest dress, doesn’t mean we’ll judge her solely on that. The least you could do is trust us enough to make our decisions on a person “by their fruits” like the Bible says, not by how they look, like the Bible discourages. I am appalled that you think so low of me and others, that you call us out as if we need to be spanked like we’re three. I am not a child, ma’am, I can make my own informed choices.

She has already said herself that she ENCOURAGES modesty, and you really don’t have to go attacking her when she hasn’t even said anything to you, or has been mean to you. That isn’t right. And I don’t think she’s basing her conclusions on, “misinterpretations”, I think she’s more getting it from logic, or something like that. and sometimes, everyone needs to be called out. I don’t like how you’re attacking her in this post.

I don’t really like any of these dresses. Selena’s dress isn’t bad on the length, & I can’t judge the back, because I can’t see it, but those sides! My goodness, I’d feel so uncomfortable wearing that, with the sleeves hanging open like that.

You may like the modest is hottest section but they are offensive to me. I don’t believe that this is what Christians should be doing. Judging others like this. I personally would never wear any of these. But these women have no problem with it… so please do not judge them. Thank you so much for reading. 🙂

The only dress I liked was Selena’s. So what if it has, “open sides and open back”? The dress looked very modest anyways and did not need a makeover AT ALL. I agree with Eurydice and Mikiki, no more makeovers!

If you look at other pics it shows tons of her bare chest from the side… until I looked it up i liked it alot too, although I still like the style of it, just not the cut of the top

        Posted by applebypie123 on March 6, 2013 at 13:08

Exactly! Then it would be really cute, like if it had a scoop back and normal sides, cuz I like how it has kind of a 60’s mod style

And can you imagine if she had leaned forward in that with a man looking at her from the side? I still think she is a nice person, even if I don’t like everything she does, but that dress reveals more than anyone should see!

Regardless of if Selena’s dress is immodest or not, I still think it’s not attractive…but that’s just me! I was never a fan of sequins and crazy patterns/fringes at the neckline. I was never a fan of the low-cut sides either (even in shirts). I don’t think it’s very cute.

I would think that it would be very uncomfortable to have part of your breast visible when you KNOW that there are hundreds of photographers that are going to be taking pics of you in the dress, and that there are thousands of little girls that are looking up to you, I would definitely make sure I was dressed modestly and was adequately covered.

I love the first and second ones! I just don’t care for the color of the third but I like the design! I don’t mind an open back BUT I would NEVER go out of the house without a bra for goodness sake!!! I can’t believe someone would be comfortable with the side of their breast visible… :/

i totally agree with applebypie, hockeychick and emilyitude. Your bringing all the girls who enjoy these posts down and sure i like selena gomez but we’re NOT saying that we should now shun her because of her immodest dress. These posts show us what an immodest dress looks like we might not have to agree but seriously, do you HAVE to start a fight or disagrement on EVERY modest is hottest post? This is really getting rediculous. If you dont like whats happening here, either dont read the articles or just email nicole but your getting really irritating with all this stuff. YOU need to stop starting all these fights.

I agree:) But also, the rest of don’t see it as objectification… I see nothing to stand against in these articles… If they were saying Selena is trashy, inapropriate, and a terrbile role model for all girls because of this outfit she is wearing. Lets shun her and slam her and judge everything she ever does again because of this one outfit…. THAT would would be objectification, but all they’re saying is, see we think that these qualifications can add up to an immodest outfit…. Or do you just not believe in modesty?

Its not about telling a woman to cover of becasue she should be ashamed of her body, it’s about telling women to cover up because, lets face it, guys are pervs, and as Christians we shouldn’t knowingly tempt others

      • Eurydice

Posted by Eurydice on March 5, 2013 at 15:42

Telling a woman to cover up is just as objectifying as telling a woman to show more skin. It reduces her worth to her body alone, and that is wrong. When is it ever okay to judge someone on their outward appearance?

Eurydice, you are entitled to your opinion, but could you be a bit more kind about it… Maybe you could say something along the lines of, “I don’t agree with you, I love the dress!” instead of saying how we are all wrong for thinking that it is immodest.

I love Mila’s dress, and it could be altered to become a great casual summer dress by shortening it a bit. I liked the second one, but I am not feeling the pattern, and I would only wear it if it came below the knees. The last one was GORGEOUS! That color would never work on me, but the style is so beautiful! And I loved the color and sequins of Selena’s dress, and I would wear it if it came below the knees and didn’t show off my entire back and sides.

  39. applebypie123

    Posted by applebypie123 on March 4, 2013 at 15:17

I LOVE the first two! They are both really cute Mila’s seems a little casual, but otherwise- adorable! I really like the mod style of Selena’s, but I’m not really down with the open back:)

  40. claremead1998

    Posted by claremead1998 on March 4, 2013 at 15:08

I think the first two are absolutely GORGEOUS!! I’m not really a fan of the third one, just because I dislike the color and the look of the fabric. As for Selena’s dress,(Which I have seen the back of) I like the color & the sequins, but I would feel uncomfortable wearing a dress that would have my entire back showing.
