Modest Is Hottest! G. Hannelius Is Summery in Yellow and We Give One Star a Makeover!

Ladies, I’m often asked to supply corroborating scripture that clearly specifies the length of a modest skirt, or that backless tops are immodest. But as you know, scripture is not always clear and specific. This is why there are so many Christian denominations: Each has its interpretation of what scripture says.

However, in order to understand Christian teaching, we have to rely on those who have extensively studied scripture. In this way, truth is backed up by fact, not opinion. Teachers such as priests and pastors take scripture, come to a conclusion about what God expects from us and create a doctrine or teaching to guide us accordingly. They don’t teach according to their personal opinion, but rather, by what’s in scripture. And in turn, this is how we choose which denomination we want to belong to.

We decide which teaching makes sense to us according to scripture. And whether it relates to forgiveness, salvation, purity or modesty, we look to those teachers for guidance throughout our lives.

When it comes to modesty, there is much to be taken from the Bible. For example:

The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them (Genesis 3:21).

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works (1 Timothy 2:9-10).

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5).

For everything in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–comes not from the Father but from the world (1 John 2:16).

Ladies, modesty is as subjective as purity. Your standards should be based on your church’s teaching, not your personal opinions!

With that in mind, let’s take a look at this week’s selection!

Joey King

Joey King

I love this vintage style dress. The white, off-the-shoulder, embroidered, lace and ruffled skirt is such a great combination. It reminds me of a fairy dress!

Kelli Berglund

Kelli Berglund

This is such a cute summer dress that’s great for all occasions. I love the simple design and the tie waist, and the length is perfectly modest!

Annasophia Robb

Annasophia Robb

This dress is so adorable. I love how it fits in the bodice and then shapes around the hips to a straight skirt. It’s very feminine and modest.

Dove Cameron

Dove Cameron

While I like the black and white contrast, the style of the cap sleeve blouse and even the concept of the skirt, the length of the skirt is just too short. Add some length so it hits the top of the knee, and this would be a modest outfit.

Which of our three modest looks is your favorite?

Okay girlies, i Just have to point out something here…
I notice that some girls always see the “immodest dress” and say that they dont think its immodest or that they would even wear it, that theres nothing wrong with it.
But i would just like to remind you girls that when we judge the modesty of something, it is not wise to judge it based on what YOU as a female think. Many outfits that we see as cute/pretty, guys would look at it on a girl and lust. We must think from a males perspective, cuz that is who we are trying to keep from stumbling. When you judge an outfits modesty, look at it and say, could this outfit lead a guys eyes to my theighs/cleavage/butt/privates or not? That is the question.
And also, you can be fully covered, bearing no skin and still cause a guy to lust if your clothes are tight enough.

I think it needs to be brought to attention that God doesn’t call us to be modest just because. He wants us to be modest so we don’t cause our brother’s to fall into temptation. In that case, OUR opinion of whether a skirt is too short or not (and most of the time we DON’T think our outfits are inappropriate) is not what matters. We have to take into perspective what goes through BOYS’ minds when they see most of our thighs… And because GIRLS are not BOYS we cannot completely understand what boys are thinking when they see us in certain outfits, so it’s safer to just wear a skirt that’s a few inches longer than to be caught in a sin because we wanted to wear what we wanted to wear.

Also, G. Hannelius’ dress is super cute, it is a good length & the collar is modest, but you can see her bra through the dress, which is not modest.

I think it is just an extra layer of fabric, not her bra

I loved all the outfits except Joey King’s. The last one was actually my favorite. I disagree completely with the statement ‘Your standards should be based on your church’s teaching, not your personal opinions!’ I don’t go to church for personal reasons. This doesn’t make any less of a Christian nor does it make my opinion on what is or isn’t modest different. If the last dress is what is considered immodest(and in the past there have been a lot of outfits that are like this) it is really hard to differ what is really immodest. Do I think the skirt is a short length? No. Do some other people think so? Yes. Everyone interprets the Bible differently and therefore we will all have different opinions.

I loved all of them! Even the “immodest one”. I think that that it was fine and modest enough, everything was covered up, nothing up top showing, nothing down below showing, she was probably wearing something underneath the skirt anyways. I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with showing legs unless you’re cheeks are coming out, or if they are super tight and super short.

I loved all of the dresses! 🙂 Joey King’s dress was pretty but the shoes totally ruined the ensemble and didn’t go at all!
And I have trouble with the statement “Your standards should be based on your church’s teaching, not your personal opinions!” My church hasn’t come out and told us all exactly what to wear–we all have different opinions on what modesty is! The only rule we have at our church is just not to wear something that will be extremely distracting to others–and I guess your opinion on that could be subjective~

My church’s teaching on modesty is not the same as this site’s. There is a lot of different beliefs on modesty, and these posts only reflect one of them.

All of these are totally cute, and I would wear all of them! The slight alterations I would personally make are to change the yellow dress’ color to red (yellow washes me out, add about an inch up in the armpit area on Annasophia Robb’s, and put about two or three inches extra skirt on Dove’s. But ladies, please remember that just a while ago people were upset because the Modest is Hottest was showing VERY REVEALING outfits – I can tell they have chosen to show more-modest-but-still-in-need-of-makeover styles, for the sake of protecting readers’ eyes. Just my thoughts…

  17. Silvey

Posted by Silvey on June 25, 2013 at 10:56

I never really got why skirts that short were bad. I mean, it does cover a good bit. But then my mom explained it to me. One of my friends was over with a dress that short and I tried it on. When I went to show her, she had me bend over, and she touched my leg where the skirt came up to. It was almost showing my butt! When my friend sat down it road up like that the same way. And as Christians, it is not our job to see how close we can get to crossing the line of modesty, it’s how close we can get to God. 🙂

    • feministchristian

Posted by feministchristian on June 25, 2013 at 12:37

yes but why would you be just bending over in a skirt? I feel like most girls know how to pick up things without just bending their own body over. And I feel like most girls know how to sit down without their dress riding up too…

Posted by spyder on June 25, 2013 at 13:56

That’s completely true in some cases, but with the occasion she was in, I don’t believe she would have been bending over at all. Granted, I don’t know exactly what she was doing, but from what i’ve seen people usually just stand around at places like thay. And like feminist said, most girls know to not bend over in a skirt.

“Your standards should be based on your church’s teaching, not your personal opinions!”
Sorry, I do not completely agree with this statement. If you truly love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, then I would think that your personal opinions would reflect Jesus’ teachings and God’s commandments. And through spending time with God and reading His word and praying, I believe He will reveal to you what you want to know and answer your questions. And because I love Him so much I would want to obey what He’s telling me. Thus, I will form my own opinion on any matter that reflects my love for God.
Now, I know that we can all struggle with loving God with everything we are and completely committing to Him, leading us to disobey Him, but pastors and other teachers have the same struggle. Ideally, all pastors love God with an almost unrealistic passion, but sadly that is not always the case. Many, many people (including myself and friends) have been hurt by the church or led astray. I believe we have to learn for ourselves what God wants from us, not rely on a pastor’s teaching, though I admit they can help.
I found a great quote from Dannah Gresh which relates to what I’m trying to say: “Modesty is possible only if you truly love God. When you love Him, you will be able to obey Him in the way that you dress.” And I guess what I’m really trying to say that if you ask God, He will reveal to you what is immodest. Search for the answer yourself; don’t just rely on someone else’s teachings (but I’m not saying that you should completely ignore them; many are very helpful). And if you truly love God, you will be able to obey Him.
With that said, I love how you stand up for what you believe is right Ms. Gaouette, even though a lot of people try to tear you down. I am a firm believer that God calls us to be modest, but the statement I quoted just bothered me.

I agree. As Christians we should form our own opinions based on how we interpret God word individually using the church’s teachings to guide us.

Posted by tmgaouette on June 24, 2013 at 19:51

@RockstarSewist Thank you so much for your comment. I completely understand what you’re saying. But you wrote some things I want to highlight: “If you truly love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, then I would think that your personal opinions would reflect Jesus’ teachings and God’s commandments. And through spending time with God and reading His word and praying, I believe He will reveal to you what you want to know and answer your questions. And because I love Him so much I would want to obey what He’s telling me. Thus, I will form my own opinion on any matter that reflects my love for God.” This is different from the “personal opinion” I’m referring to. If I’m correct, you’re “opinion” is a reflection of His teaching, but is that really your opinion? Opinion is not often backed up by fact or knowledge, but you determine modesty based on the bible, prayer and a relationship with God. This is the same way honest and good priests and pastors determine their teaching. In contrast, I often hear, “I think it’s okay” to wear this, or “I don’t think it’s immodest.” And such statements are not founded on the Word. I believe that you’re very focused on what’s pleasing to God, which is so inspiring! I also understand that some priests and pastors have their own struggles, this is why I wrote, “this is how we choose which denomination we want to belong to. We decide which teaching makes sense to us according to scripture. And whether it relates to forgiveness, salvation, purity or modesty, we look to those teachers for guidance throughout our lives.” We don’t blindly follow priests or pastors. In the same way that we select our friends and role models, we use discernment to determine who will guide us well in our walk with Christ. Thank you again for your comment, it was refreshing. God bless you. TMG

I totally agree!!! I don’t agree with everything my pastor says is “acceptable” to wear. I’m under 18, only for a little while longer, and I have to abide by what my parents say I have to wear. I think that statement was wrong in so many ways. And I think your answer was amazingly stated!

@Carly C Actually you wouldn’t the skirt covers a lot of skin, it’s just that Dove has long legs, so you see more skin than you would on other girls with different body types, you wouldn’t see her panties unless you were trying to, that doesn’t make her immodest that makes whoever is trying to see her panties lusting and probs messed up in the head because NO ONE should be trying to see the panties of a girl that young

I loooove AnnaSophia Robb’s. It’s nice to finaly see a fitted dress on here. The yellow one is swallowing her a bit, but it’s cute. The first dress should have been accessoried WAY differently. Cute though. As usual, my favorite is the last one. It’s completely my style. Granted, I’d probably add an inch or two, but definitely not down to my knee! Haha.
