I recently received the new Leeland album, The Great Awakening, as a gift. I had heard of the band but never really knew its music. I was BLOWN away by its songs, lyrics and passion for the Lord.
The band comprises five young passionate musicians: Leeland Mooring is the lead vocalist, Jack Mooring is the keyboardist and backup vocalist, Casey Moore is on guitar, Shelly Mooring is the bassist and backup vocalist, and Mike Smith is on the drums.
The album is full of refreshing chords and harmonies. There are some upbeat songs, such as “The Great Awakening,” and there are revealing and powerful songs such as my favorite, “Chains Hit the Ground.”
Some of the lyrics to “Chains Hit the Ground” are:
And I remember the nails that you took for me
when you died in my shame and iniquity
Jesus you set me free.
The thorns of my pain you wore in a crown
When you bowed your head,
your love was poured out
AND MY CHAINS HIT THE GROUND.
WOW–how powerful are those lyrics?! I can listen to the song over and over; it is such a blessing and it is full of truth and love! This is the kind of music we need more of! I really hope you PI girls consider supporting this band.
Listen to “Chains Hit the Ground”:
The band is being recognized for its unique sound and passion. It has been nominated for several Dove Awards–in 2007 it was nominated for “New Artist of the Year,” “Praise and Worship Album of the Year,” and “Rock Contemporary Album of the Year.” In 2009, for its album Opposite Way, Leeland also was nominated for “Praise and Worship Album of the Year.”
The band not only is rising in the Christian music industry, but also has been nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Contemporary Christian Music Album” category. This is Leeland’s 4th Grammy nomination. The 54th Annual Grammy Awards will air on Feb. 12, 2012 on CBS.
