Q&A: Nicole, Where Can I Shop for Modest Clothes?
posted on October 4, 2012 at 12:23 pm
QUESTION:
My dad is the pastor of our church and because everyone expects our family to set a good example for the church, my parents are really strict on what I wear. All tops have to be at least one inch above cleavage (if it shows any I can’t wear it unless I have something under it) and for skirts and dresses any more than one inch above my knee is too short. I understand why they are so strict, but almost everything I own I have to layer because it’s too short or too low. Where can I find pretty, modest clothes that I don’t have to layer at a reasonable price? What would you suggest?
ANSWER:
Hi girls. This question was posted to the forums by Lizzy_1708. Here’s my answer: Target has clothes by different brands, and they have a lot of affordable options, be it blouses or skirts. Be careful about shopping at Forever 21. Although they have cute t-shirts and accessories, they also sometimes have scandalous things, too! I love Old Navy because their clothes tend to be pretty good quality and are modest and appropriate. Hope that helps, Lizzy!
Love,
Nicole

Seems like all the stores nowadays are selling clothes that are made for arousing lustful thoughts in men’s and young boy’s minds. I think the only way out of this is to make your own clothes
Nicole, I <3 Old Navy!
I have a quick question though… What are your thought on how short shorts can be? Just kinda wanting a second opinion…. Thanks! (:
I get all my shorts from Delia’s… They have a great style called Baileys, and they come down to the middle of my thigh and I’m really tall. I think that as long as they cover your butt (with reasonable lengths below), they aren’t to tight, and you aren’t constantly pulling them down, that’s what I always look for in shorts
I agree with musicgirl. im really tall, so i have to be careful because shorts often look really short on me. sometimes though, i do wear shorts most would consider “too short”, but only around the house or with my girl friends
i also like to wear bermudas if the material isnt too heavy (they usually come to about an inch or two above the knee or right at it so they are always a good length!)
I love old navy!!! I also love kohl’s, Delia’s, jcpenny, and Aeropostale. I also layer a lot, but a lot of times, I come across good, modest finds
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kohl’s!!! Almost all my clothes are from there!
I saw some I <3 Jesus shirts @ Forever 21. But they were see-through!! Kinda contradictary, I think.
You’re supposed to layer something under them.
I very very rarely see anyone, Christian or not, wearing one of those see-through shirts with nothing under it.
I have trouble fitting into a lot of clothing at Old Navy, since it’s made either for girls or for women, especially jeans (I’m a size 0 or 1 with long legs- best place to find jeans for me is Wet Seal). But they do have a lot of nice clothes, especially when it gets colder outside.
Good question Lizzy,and great answer,Nicole!
Hi, Lizzy_1708, I dont know how your parents feel about online shopping, but if they’re okay with it, you can find a lot of cute, modest clothes inexpensively if you look around
C 28 has really cute clothes.
Maurice’s has some super cute modest stuff! (Well, they also have stuff that isn’t…But most of it’s fine.) They’re like Dress Barn, but in junior’s sizes.
Forever21 has plenty of modest things, mixed in with the stuff that is less so…They’re actually a Christian company. They have “John 3:16″ stamped on the bottoms of their bags.
If your okay with doing a lot of looking, you can usually find cute stuff at most thrift stores. I like to call em’ “Thrift Store Scores.” And I have lots!
The requirements listed, no shorter than 1″ above the knee, and no cleavage showing aren’t that strict–at all. It is pretty easy to find appropriate things, and for skirts you can always wear leggings underneath.
Justice, Delia’s (my favorite store!), JCPenny, and Target usually have appropriate things.
i love forever 21 thats where i get most of my things….
Nicole this is off topic but my dream is to be a fashion designer. A famous one I wanna make a hudge change in the fashion industry. It’s hard to dress modest now at days including for lil girls. All designers ever design are too short shorts for lil girls even for youth. If the famous part doesn’t happen I know God can use me to impact lost souls teaching girls how to dress modest. I’m 21 and I wanna be on Fashion Star or Project Runway. I’m gonna rebel against the fashion rules. My clothing line is Couture Rebel. Is it a bad idea for me to be dreaming the famous part or is it a dream that I can impact lost souls or be the light to the dark!?
