The Skinny on Skinny Jeans

TAGS: , , , ,

Skinny jeans are the fad in fashion, it seems. I see them all around me. And I’ve noticed many comments and questions from PI girls regarding skinny jeans–some of you love them, while others consider them immodest.

Skinny jeans are basically slim fit jeans that taper at the bottom. They’ve made their appearance primarily within various music industry trends, including rock, punk subculture and heavy metal.

Today, skinny jeans come in many shapes, designs and colors.

But are they immodest?

If you’ve read previous posts on modesty, you’ll be familiar with the reasons why dressing modestly is expected of a Christian girl whose desire is to please and glorify God.

But I say to you, That whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart (Matthew 5:28).

You may want to go back and read some past PI posts on modesty, specifically Can Christian Girls Wear Pants? Also, in the Style Guide for Christian Girls: Modesty, I wrote about the reasons why we should be modest in our dress, stating, “The objective of modesty is to refrain from wearing clothing that causes lustful thoughts, whether intentionally or unintentionally.”

In that same post, I also referenced a 2004 article written by Monsignor Charles M. Mangan. Mangan offered his own principles of modesty as determined by Pope Pius XII in 1957. “To dress modestly,” Magnan wrote, “is to avoid deliberately causing sexual excitement in oneself or one’s neighbor.”

Skinny jeans can be very immodest, especially if they’re stretchy and paired with other immodest garments like crop tops. However, because skinny jeans come in various designs, it is possible to find a pair that is modest. When shopping for skinny jeans, consider the following:

  • Don’t pick skinny jeans that are skin tight. Any pants that are too tight are like a second skin–they reveal the shape of your body and look sexy, especially around the butt and thighs. For those of you who wonder why it’s not okay to look sexy, remember that causing boys and men to lust after you is not appropriate.

  • Opt for skinny jeans that are not low-waisted. The image below shows a pair of skinny pants that are not skin tight and have an appropriate waist.

  • In the above image, the model also wears flats. I would suggest wearing flats or low heels with your skinny jeans. Anything too high will elongate the legs, creating a sexier look. Take a look at the images above with models wearing skinny jeans and heels.

Below, both Kate Moss and Kirsten Dunst are wearing skinny jeans with longer tops and flats. Their skinny jeans are on the snug side, but their pairings make their looks more modest.

  • Remember that body types make a huge difference when it comes to items of clothing. If you try your jeans on and feel that your figure looks too revealing as far as its shape around the butt or hips, then consider wearing a longer top or sweater. I think this look is adorable, especially with flats or high riding boots. Check out Zoe Saldana below.

Do you have skinny jeans? Do you have some tips on how to wear them so they’re appropriately modest?

I do wear skinny jeans sometimes, but none of them are to skinny, and i do consider the jeans i wear modest. i think high waisted is more modest and my mom says it looks better on me than low waisted. My favorite type of skinny jeans or reagular jeans are the super bright colored kinds! I love me some color :)

  2. Project Inspired Member

I’m not a huge skinny jean person, I can’t stand when clothes are skin tight… I like to where ones that still have space. I also like the cool colored ones. :) I ususally steer clear of them, but every now and then, I’ll find a nice modest pair to wear. :)

    • Project Inspired Member

      i agree with you.
i do not like tight chothes either

      • younglady94

I don’t wear any kind of jeans. My mom doesn’t believe in women and girls wearing pants.

      • younglady94

I do think some jeans are cute, though. I don’t like any kind of tight clothes.

  3. bethechange14

For some reason I find skinny jeans more comfortable than regular jeans. Mine definately aren’t the skin tight kind. I wearing skinny jeans in the fall/winter and pairing them with boots. I’ve actually never considered them to be immodest so this article was a good wake up call!

  4. Project Inspired Member

I do have tight skinny jeans, but they are tight because im growing and right now jeans that are long enough are hard to come by, and if so, they are EXPENSIVE! So, my fix is: put a bottom on it! I put shorts or a skirt over it, and I SET TRENDS! :) Its so cute! I wear my jordans with it, a t-shirt, and matching jacket with it, so i dont look too dressy for school. everyone copied my style after that!

    • Project Inspired Member

Im trying to set trends too! I pulled out my grandmothers old hats (from the 90′s) and they’re not as bad as everyone thinks! (Blossom hats can go with practically ANYTHING) Im not a fan of the shorts/skirts over jeans but some people can rock them and make it look right.(That trend looks awful on me cause im a bit older I guess) I wear a long shirt, like a dress shirt (literally a dress shirt) that comes 4 inches above the knee with a pair of jeans, cinch it at the waist with a belt and some converse or combat boots. But ay the early 2000 fashion is coming back slowly so pull out those plaid skirts and boot cut jeans!

I love my skinny jeans. The skintight ones are my favorite because i love all the different colora
Wet Seal and Hollister have the best<<3

  6. Project Inspired Member

I’m wearing them now and I’m very modest about my clothing. It just depends on the style.

I do not own a single pair of jeans, but I dont think they are immodest.

    • Project Inspired Member

      why dont you have jeans?????

      • Project Inspired Member

I don’t own a single pair of jeans too.

    • Project Inspired Member

i have a cousin who never wear jeans! she finds them uncomfortable and thinks they dont look good with her body shape. I personally think they are extremely comfortable, but everyone has their opinions

Well tall girls like me can’t really do much with the fact our legs are long. I do not really find it “sexy”. Just because tall girls wear skinny jeans doesn’t mean were looking for attention. Just because we wear heels doesn’t mean we are trying to be hot. (No I don’t wear heels)It was kind of rude to say that “Anything too high will elongate the legs, creating a sexier look.” No not really. Tall girls are no different and we really don’t need to be limited clothing wise.

    • Project Inspired Member

i kinda agree with ya there :/

      • Project Inspired Member

Yeah. Honestly I think it is less about the cut of the jeans and more about how you carry yourself, conduct yourself, etc. I notice in PI’s articles when they give comparisons between immodest/modest clothing, usually if you look at the clothes themselves there is scarcely a difference, the real difference is the posture and attitude of the girl wearing them.

    • Project Inspired Member

I agree with you LizzyL. I like wearing skinny jeans with high boots and it as heels. I’m not trying to look sexy. I like the look. I’m like 5’9 and have curves. High heels don’t make a person look sexy. It is the clothing and how they present themselves.

      • Project Inspired Member

Thank you! You sound like a great dresser. Sure, their are tall people trying to be sexy, but their are also short people. We aren’t doing anything wrong, its the way God made us! :)

  9. Project Inspired Member

i have a LOT of jeans, most of them skinny and coloured. i love my jeans and dont think theyre immodest

  10. Project Inspired Member

Well mine (skinny jeans) look like regular green jeans cause I bought them 2 sizes bigger lol im sticking with stright leg for now on.

  11. Project Inspired Member

I do have skinny jeans and I don’t think they are very tight although I don’t see how they can be inmodest. Men will lust over a woman no matter what she is wearing. And sometimes for short people like me we need our legs to look longer so it’s not fair to say that either.

    • Project Inspired Member

I argee. No matter how modest you dress, there’s gonna be at least one man that will lust after you.(Trust me, Ive tried) So why change the girl who is being appropriate. Maybe the lustful man is the one who needs to change.

  12. Project Inspired Member

Anything too long can make it look sexy?? Im sorry but i am 5’8 and if i wear heels i am going to look tall no matter what and wearing heels with skinny jeans can be very cute and modest and i dont wear heels so that guys can look at me, i wear heels because they are fashionable and can make you look really pretty and feel confident (and im not talking about stripper heels) why should we ALWAYS be concerned with our bodies as women just because men cant control themselves (i am not saying you should dress immodest) but i am not going to think every single day oh this guy is checking me out its my fault, no! I am woman and this is my body and if men cant control themselves, it means they have a problem and objectify women. But that doesnt mean we should put shame on our bodies every step of the way, just because of men, but i also believe in dressing modest and classy and wear what fits you nice.

    • Project Inspired Member

I agree with you 100%! Especially about the heels. I don’t wear them to make guys look at me, I wear them because I would rather wear presentable shoes to certain places than show up in sneakers.

    • Project Inspired Member

I totally agree with you!! Amen.

    • risingsunsets

I was with you until you said this:
“why should we ALWAYS be concerned with our bodies as women just because men cant control themselves”

      and then:
“I am woman and this is my body and if men cant control themselves, it means they have a problem and objectify women.”

No. They DON’T ‘objectify’ women. Men were made in a way that causes them to be lustful when we don’t cover our bodies, and God pronounced the way he made men as GOOD. I’ve had men ask me to not wear a certain skirt or top (even though I thought those clothes were fine), including people I date, because they CAN’T control it. It’s how they are. You can’t be so ignorant as to say that what you are wearing is just fine and all men are pigs because they stare. A school teacher did an experiment to explain to girls such as you why you can’t think like that. She separated the girls into a different room with a large bowl of candy at the front of the room, for twenty minutes. Any girls that even looked sideways at the bowl of candy got to write lines. All the girls ended up writing lines.
To men, our curves, our smell, everything about us, is sweet. That’s how they are made. So when you decide, in your ignorance, that all men are pigs because they look, you need to realize that you help them be lustful by what you wear.

      • SlinkyKitty88

I don’t think that’s what Christ4life meant. I think she was just saying that you CAN dress modestly, and SOME men, will still stare and lust after you, because some men do objectify women, and will creep on anyone.
Of course, some guys look because they just think you look nice, and aren’t lusting at all. :)

      • Project Inspired Member

Ok….i dont think you understand what i trying to say, ofcourse u need to dress modest but im talking about guys telling you cant wear this or that because that makes me think bad, ok then im like there is something wrong with you thinking sexual thoughts when im wearing skinny jeans that dont look slutty at all because i cover up my body well, guys are supposes to appreciate a womans body not lust after it and they have the word of god to renew their mind with if they lust after women who dont dress slutty at all but like a woman and excuse me for having a womanly body because afterall i am a woman and i cant live my life every minute of the concerned about a guy thoughts

      • Project Inspired Member

Matthew 5:28 says, “Watch the way you dress!
But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

If a woman dresses immodestly, and a man lusts after her, then she and the man share responsibility for the sin.

NOW If a woman dresses modestly and a man STILL lusts after her, then HE is the one responsible; and maybe he does have a problem objectifying women. The woman should not be ashamed because he could have controlled his thoughts.

Look at Proverbs 25:28, it says, “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” We all have self-control. I’m sure that we ALL have trouble with self-control of lust at times but prayer is key.

I hope that this helped :)

I have 2 pairs of skinny jeans. I usually pair them with a loose top – I don’t like the way skinny jeans look with tighter tops. They’re not too tight.

  14. Project Inspired Member

Personally, any time I wear jeans, they’re skinny jeans. I am all of 5 feet 3 inches I like to wear them because it is much easier to tuck them into boots, and if I’m wearing flat shoes (I wear TOMS all the time I adore them), other styles like flare and even some boot cut jeans drag the ground which i think is kinda gross, and my skinnies don’t do that. Those are just my thoughts though.

  15. Project Inspired Member

Quick question: Are tanktops considered to be immodest? Like, just wearing a tanktop and jeans?

    • Project Inspired Member

Hey, as long as you’re not trying to get attention, that’s good. Tank tops are kind of necessary for the summer. But as long as it doesn’t reveal too much I think it’s fine.

    • Project Inspired Member

I don’t know if just wearing a tank top and jeans would be immodest. I feel that it’s the way a woman carries herself. If the girl is just wearing the clothes (that seem immodest) to look cute and she respects herself (keeps her legs closed or crossed when sitting down, isn’t trying to look super sexy to get all the boys attention), then I feel that it can be acceptable. But just to be safe, I usually keep a small jacket or something to wear over it with me.

    • Project Inspired Member

It’s up to you and your parents mostly. I have a couple tank tops and they are modest to me. If you feel it’s immodest you could always wear a tank top with a cardigan or a sweater. :D God bless hun!

    • Project Inspired Member

My personal opinion: Is that the spaghetti strapped ones are immodest, and if they REALLY really hug your chest and waist. If not, go ahead :)

    • Project Inspired Member

if you avoid wearing tanks that are too thin or, showing your bra straps, you should be fine.

  16. Paris

I know that it is wrong to make men lust after you,but it is okay to look sexy for yourself?

    • risingsunsets

As long as they way you look sexy to yourself isn’t visible to anyone else. Always wear modest clothing, but if you want the confidence that comes with feeling sexy, then wearing nice or lacy underwear, as long as it’s not peeking out over your clothes, or visible through them, then it should be fine. Make sure that you actually are wearing underwear, though, thongs would be very inappropriate.

  17. Project Inspired Member

I agree that tight clothes are really a lot of trouble, not only in terms of being sexy, but tight clothes are more hard to wear…and more uncomortable, don’t you think?

  18. Project Inspired Member

I wear skinny jeans and I even have one pair of jeggings, but the jeggings are only tight around my thighs and looser around my calves. Whenever I get dressed I permit myself one piece of tight or shorter clothing. I feel like when girls wear the tight tiny tops or lace tops with super short super tight shorts, they might as well walk around in their underwear or their bikini. When I wear skinny jeans, I wear appropriate shoes and put on a flowy top that has a higher neckline and doesn’t reveal a lot of skin. It still looks cute and trendy, kind of like the Duchess of Wales’s outfits (Kate Middleton), where she is wearing skinny jeans, but she has made it modest with simple hair, makeup, and a conservative top. I actually have asked some of my guy friends and they said they don’t like it when girls wear an outfit that is super tight or wear super short or see-through stuff; I know nice guys that like modesty. Not only that, but it shows self-respect for yourself.

  19. Project Inspired Member

I’m a skinny girl with long legs, and it makes it hard to find jeans that fit me. Buy jeans that fit my waist, or jeans that go all the way down my leg (with extra)? My friend gave me a pair of skinny jeans that did both, and I’ve been hooked on skinny jeans since. I have a pair of the skin tight ones, but even though they’re 00 they don’t fit me very good, so I rarely wear them, and when I do it’s always with a loose shirt.
But I just gotta point out, sometimes, like me, your body limits what you can/can’t get with clothes (not to mention my budget). Sometimes skinny jeans are the best option, and I’m glad to hear that they aren’t immodest, so long as they aren’t skin tight(:

    • Project Inspired Member

I know exactly how you feel! Finding something that will fit your waist and be long enough when you have a small waist and very long legs can be so frustrating. My mom says I’m in between sizes because jeans always fit me in the waist but only come down to my ankles (i’m not the biggest fan of capris) or they’re to big in the waist but fit my legs perfectly. Uggg it’s really annoying! Most of my jeans are skinny, but i usually wear shorts or a dress, and sometimes my jeans :)

      • Project Inspired Member

Shorts! That brings up another question… Does anyone know where to find mid-thigh shorts (not as long as bermudas, but not as short as most shorts) that are decently priced?

    • xJesusLovesYoux

      I feel you. I have long legs also. My mom, who’s an inch taller than me, has shorter legs than me, so it’s hard to find jeans that fit me. I have to go into sizes that are big around my waist, but are the right length. so I don’t wear skinny jeans often. And when I do, I wear a looser fitting shirt. So glad to find someone with the same hurdle too cross when dressing :}

      • Project Inspired Member

Domino, I find that American Eagle has some nice Midi Shorts in a boyfriend style, so they are looser. I don’t know exactly what a “reasonable price” is, but I buy from them.

  20. Project Inspired Member

I don’t have a pair of skinny jeans. I had one in 7th grade and they hurt so much! My mom threw them out. I don’t wear skinny jeans. I wear jeggings (Which are much more comfortable and fashionable -in my opinion anyway) And I mostly have leggings of almost every color in my clothes drawer. I really like to dress color coordinated. :)

  21. Project Inspired Member

I personally don’t own skinny jeans, but if I wanted to, they would not be the skin-tight low waist kind. I think it’s a matter of how you wear them; I have a friend who wears her low waist jeans with a thin tank (or similar top) and she is constantly pulling her pants up! She makes them look immodest. On the other hand, my friend who wears the higher waist ones with loose or long tops always looks classy and modest.

  22. xJesusLovesYoux

i love wearing skinny jeans, but the thought that always bothers me is if its modest or not. this cleared things up. skinny jeans are o, as ling as the rest is modest. :3 since i never wear tops that are short (unless im swimming) then im fine ._.

  23. olburrows

I believe that a great alternative to skinny jeans (if you don’t particularly like them), is the straight leg types of jeans. They are kind of like skinny jeans, but a tiny bit looser overall. They’re great!

    • Project Inspired Member

I agree. Skinny jeans are uncomfortable. I always look for straight leg…. :/

  24. Project Inspired Member

I have a hard time finding skinny jeans because I’m really curvy in the hip and butt area. But my one pet peeve about skinny jeans is when they bunch around the ankle. Skinny jeans are about the line of the leg, and with bunched up fabric, it ruins the line. And in general, I don’t wanna see your crack. Or underwear.

  25. Project Inspired Member

I like skinny jeans and think it is ok to war them if you do it modestly if not I don’t think is you should wear them.

  26. SunshineGirl

I like to wear skinny jeans. I think I have one black pair and one blue pair. The reason I have them on for my boots. Boots are the cutest shoes EVER, and you can’t see them if your jeans are hanging over them. I don’t wear skinny jeans all the time, just rarely, when I get cute new shoes. When you get skinny jeans you can tuck them into your adorable new shoes. Also, when I pick out skinny jeans, I never get the super tight ones.

  27. Project Inspired Member

Personally, I am not that crazy with the skinny jeans look with flats. I do love skinny jeans with boots though and I’m just wondering if fur boots make skinny jeans look too sexy. I’ve been wearing a pair of black skinny jeans with my fur boots that aren’t high healed.

  28. Project Inspired Member

I don’t want to be mean or rude or cause trouble, but I’m detecting a hint of hypocricy. When Nicole posts pictures of herself (like the before and after shots or when she sends letters for project anti-cosmo) I have noticed that she wears really short skirts. I just think that if you’re gonna talk to us about modesty, you should be modest yourself. And if SKINNYJEANS are immodest, then a mid-thigh hemline probably is too. Also, I know Nicole is no longer a Victoria’s Secret model, but the pictures are still all over her wall. I mean, I know that if it were me, I would be emberassed to have a picture of myself in bikinis or underwear on my wall. I would have taken them down by now. Especially since there are comments by men about how sexy Nicole looks in the picture! Doesn’t she always tell us NOT to look sexy!? Just my thoughts. I don’t want it to be true, but it is. Sorry Nicole.

  29. Project Inspired Member

If you ask me, we shouldn’t put our focus on these kind of issues. If we focus on the love of God, and feed on His grace daily, dressing appropriately will naturally just flow. Then you wouldn’t be stressing on whether a pair of jeans are too tight or a skirt is too short or tight tank tops etc. because naturally responding to God’s goodness will result in an effortless way of glorifying Him.

  30. Project Inspired Member

I absolutely love skinny jeans and I wear them all the time. (I hardly ever wear boot cuts :P ) These are great tips for finding a modest pair of skinny jeans and wearing them in a godly way. I will be sure to remember these next time I put some skinny jeans on! :)

  31. Project Inspired Member

I love my skinny jeans. But I do not like the skinny jeans that could basically be your skin. It’s immodest. It’s like dangling raw meat in front of a shark. Or, more like dangling it in front of a bunch of hormonal teenage boys. That’s just asking for trouble.

Don’t take it from me though, I’m only 13. So I guess my answer is, yes, I like skinny jeans. But no, I don’t like SKIN JEANS.

    • abbie478

I agree :) Some girls wear them so tight, and they aren’t even the jegging type!!

  32. pinkpenguin318

I really don’t think skinny jeans are immodest for the most part, unless they have rips in them in immodest places, or they are as tight on you as leggings–perhaps you’re talking about “jeggings” in a way? I love skinny jeans and most of my jeans are this style. When chosen strategically and worn the right way, they flatter my “curvy” body quite well. I think one of the PI writers should do an article about PINK yoga pants, or great ways to modestly wear leggings/”jeggings”?

  33. naynay141516

I love my skinny jeans, they are perfect under some of my longer shirts. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

  34. Project Inspired Member

I’ve noticed a lot that people always talk about inmodest clothes on girls. As T.M. Gaouette had quoted from the bible, “But I say to you, That whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart (Matthew 5:28).” But my question is, how come no one says anything about guys? I mean, the sag their pants to there knees!! (btw: gross) and any time they slightly bend over, there boxers are showing. Then they where muscle shirts to show off there abbs. To me, it’s the same thing as a girl wearing a low cut shirt that shows her cleavage. We all know the guys are trying to show off and get us to look at them. yet, how come no one addresses them? (yes, I do realize it’s also more common in girls than men)

    • Skittle1524

i know almost EVERY boy in my grade is like that and its super weird like seriously ever heard of a belt but i don’t want to sound negative about it. everyone has there fashion i guess. i read somewhere that this one place is trying to ban saggy pants.

    • Project Inspired Member

I have no idea, but I’ve had the same issue. Christian sites put out “Modesty Surveys” and “Modesty Tips” and they are all for girls. I think guys should get it in their heads that they have to be modest too.

  35. Project Inspired Member

I wear skinny jeans but their not immodest. I always wear mine with trainers and a printed tee.

  36. Project Inspired Member

I like wearing colorful skinny jeans under skirts.

  37. Skittle1524

i have like 3 pairs of really nice skinny jeans from jcpennys and i like to wear them with a nice pair of flats and a longish shirt. it makes a really cute outfit and it isnt immodest.

  38. faulty-but-real

i love(d) my skinny jeans! but,i do HATE tight fitting clothes. people said to me that i should wear tight (“real clothes,”as they put it) clothes to my normal not too lose to baggy, comfertable clothes. i never did get any tight fitting jeans. never will.

  39. Project Inspired Member

I wear skinny jeans, i dont have a lot of them. I only have one pair that fits good, and i got them at rue21 for $5 on clearance. I don’t consider the jeans i wear immodest, because i like to wear longer shirts so if its tight in the but it just covers it up some :)

  40. Project Inspired Member

How could skinny jeans be inappropriate??? my mom wears TIGHT skinny jEANS with stilettos….

  41. Project Inspired Member

I wear skinny jeans… i cant pull off any other realy others make my hips look big and boxy

  42. Project Inspired Member

i have to wear low rise jeans :(

    • abbie478

whats the big deal? Do you only like wearing high rise ones??

  43. Project Inspired Member

I think that just about all skinny jeans are immodest. My dad would never let me wear them. (he usually tells me what is modest and whats not) If you are trying to be modest and not sensual… I would suggest not wearing them!

  44. kenzielove

i love this article! Thanks for telling ways to make skinny jeans more modest, instead of just saying that they are all together immodest.

  45. Project Inspired Member

This is a little insulting to me personally. I’m not saying its right to flaunt everything, but no elongating the legs? no heels? Just put me in a burlap sack why don’t you. I’m really disappointed in this article.

  46. BrittanyLovesYouu

Honestly, skinny jeans is all I wear…

  47. Project Inspired Member

    Great advice :)

  48. abbie478

I think if you are wearing them for your own comfort, then whatever (as long as their not popping at the seams tight!) But the girls who wear them for the obvious reasons of attracting guys……………..geesh. I own a lot of pairs, but I also have a wider legged pair of jeans that are cute too! :)
