Wearing Less Doesn’t Make You More…Even in Hollywood

TAGS: , , ,

Eeeeshh! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Miley Cyrus at the Billboard Music Awards this year. Take a look at her outfit–what was she thinking?!

Does Cyrus believe that dressing this way demonstrates confidence? She’s comfortable in her own skin, so she’s going to show as much of it as possible? Maybe she wants us to think of her as courageous. She obviously has to have some sense of fearlessness or bravado to be so exposed, right?

I wrote an article a while ago asking whether Cyrus’ ego or insecurity drove her to sexualize herself. I believe the latter plays a part in the interior motives for Cyrus, and for many of today’s female celebs.

Cyrus is not the only celebrity who thrives in showing as much as possible by wearing the least amount of clothing…or the most revealing clothes.

These days, it feels like a competition between artists, and I’m afraid of where their desire to outshine will lead–especially with so many young, adoring eyes watching.

In Hollywood, the desire to shock always seems to trump the wish to glorify God.

I can’t come close to comprehending Cyrus’ philosophies, or those of the other celebrities mentioned, but I would like to bring these questions up for your benefit, PI ladies.

Revealing your body only does one thing…it reveals your body. And trust me, when you’re showing your cleavage or presenting yourself in a way that allows others to imagine you naked, then that’s all that you’re doing. How many people are thinking, “Wow, Cyrus is so confident and courageous, I totally respect her”? Maybe some of her fans, but the majority?

No. I’m pretty sure that many people are thinking, “She’s hot,” She’s sexy” and “Ooh look, I see breasts.” And, of course, images of practically naked girls conjure up the kind of thoughts in men and boys that shouldn’t be in print on a Christian website for teen girls.

Wearing less doesn’t make anyone more of a person. And you certainly can’t demand or expect respect if you don’t respect yourself.

In a major contrast, I’d like to remind you of the Duchess of Cambridge, who I think is the epitome of beauty and class. And her fashion style is very modest, yet she looks elegant and pretty.

In the images below, the Duchess is wearing a dress with a lace back. The media made a huge fuss about her “bare” back.

It’s amazing how the Duchess wears a gown with a lace back and the media reports it as if she’s half naked. This is considered risqué for her. This clearly demonstrates the different expectations people have for her, in addition to the level of respect she is given. Compared to Cyrus, she’s wearing a blanket, but the Duchess is still held in very high regard.

PI ladies, what do you think about Cyrus’ outfit? Do you think that dressing this way conveys courage and confidence?

Personally I think her outfit is gross :( I love Kate’s dress!! its so pretty. :)

  2. Project Inspired Member

This is rediculous. They let Miley walk around half-naked without a word but one of the classiest women in the media is bashed for wearing a lace back dress (which I think is beautiful btw) Its not fair in my opinion.

Miley could have at least worn pants. Mabye she dresses like that because she is insecure. I love Kate’s dress. I would wear it in a rose pink with a light glitter.

  4. Project Inspired Member

Dressing like that, Miley looks like she’s trying too hard to fit in, and isn’t very secure in her own skin. Kate’s dress on the other hand, looks beautiful! She dosn’t look like she’s in secure, or trying to fit in at all!

I think dressing in provocative clothing is NOT okay for me. I try to wear modest things, and trust me girls, it’s a good philosophy.

  6. trumpetchick

It’s not classy. I actually think it’s rather tacky. They’re only going to attract guys who want their bodies…

  7. brennaeskyler2

I don’t like see any star dress like that. It’s so sad to see Hollywood fall down more! :(

  8. Project Inspired Member

Oh my word, no. Showing too much skin is SO GROSS. It’s not even attractive! And see through clothing? What has society resulted to? I just find it entirely sad. It’s completely disgusting. If your doing those things just to get attention, you’re getting it for the wrong reasons. ALL the wrong reasons. This is pure ridiculous and unacceptable. :(

That’s the difference between British royalty and American royalty. The dushess is classy. Miley is trashy. What else is new? Sad.

Who – cares? If you are dumb enough to look up to Miley Cyrus…well I’ll leave it at that. If you’re dumb enough to look up to ANY of those celebrities you have issues.

I think I know what you mean–but I would love to look like Taylor–naturally pretty and wearing very pretty, trendy and modest clothes. It’s seriously sad that showing lots of skin is a hot trend. I see plenty of trends that are high-fashion and are very modest all the time!

  12. Project Inspired Member

i also believe modesty is hottest, its saddens me when i see girls thinking they need to show of their body, i always felt uncomfortable if i showed too much of my body so ive learned to tone it down and even with shorts i always make sure that you can’t see my butt, and i also make sure that my breasts are covered, i think you can look elegant and not boring but still classy like the older days when women used to wear classy clothes and also you get much more respect;)

I agree that immodest apparel is a terrible fashion statement these days awful and not at all what God wants for us. It may gets us more guys but how that be good if their there for the wrong reasons. Cheap merchandise always gets alot of customers… I agree. You cant gain any respect while letting your body be cheap. Kates dress is beautimous. Love it.

(id also like to add that though mileys dress isnt at all what a christian girl should wear id like to point out that its not nearly as bad as the dresses in the video! EW!)

  14. popstar523

It looks like she put on the jacket, but forgot to put on the rest of the outfit. It looks like the dress was made to be put over a shirt and pants. I love Kate’s dress, though!

  15. pinkpenguin318

I saw a picture on the Teen Vogue Facebook picture of Cyrus wearing this jacket, along with Rihanna. Now I’m not going to lie–the jackets are beautiful and I’d love to wear as apart of an OUTFIT. But with nothing else–just a jacket and some heels? EWW! Seriously, may I reiterate PUT SOME CLOTHES ON! I hate this trend. Trends like lace, suit jackets, and beige (light brown) are so trendy and beautiful, but not when they’re totally worn the wrong way! There goes Princess Kate being a role model for modesty. Why doesn’t she stay conservative and only flash that off to her husband in bed? That’s sad, really that’s sad. :(

    • applebypie123

we all make a bad outfit choice every now and then. what one out of all the outfits we have seen princess kate weari s alittle immodest? we shouldn’t bash her as a modesty role model forever now. after all, we each have to decide what to wear based on our personal convictions.

      • pinkpenguin318

I agree. She still is a beautiful woman who most of the time is very conservative in the things she wears. And I love those hats that the British people wear!

      • KPriorify

What do you mean, BASH? She should be proud that she’s the figure of beauty and modesty.

That is Gross! My parents wouldn’t let me watch Hannah Montana because they knew so was bad. I was upset at first but over the years I understood. I’m now happy parents wouldn’t let me. But I like the duchesses dress. Very appropriate (except the front I don’t like).

  17. faulty-but-real

Miley Cyrus is going to end up like Lindsy Lohan. one of my friends knew it from the start, and i knew it sence Hannah Montana has been off-air and her video for Can’t Be Tamed came out. and i think the duchess’ dress is lovely! Miley used to wear more modest clothes, but as the years went by she went from modest to skimpy, almost in a snap. i hate Cyrus’ outfit,i think it’s gross, and way to revealing. my mom always has me wear clothes that are modest and comfertable. V-necks have to have a tank-top under them,no shorts that go beyond Bermuda shorts (in other words,no short-shorts),no short skirt, dress have to come down to at least the knee, and no low rise jeans unless i have a long enough shirt to pair them with, and no tight jeans either. i have always followed these rules with little to no complaining. and you know what,if Miley Cyrus can walk around half dressed, and the duchess, who’s wearing one of the most lovey dresses I’ve ever seen, can’t wear a lace back, then there is something seriously corrupted going on with the media!

  18. hlaluvzjesus

Yes, Miley’s dress/shirt was very showy. Although, we shouldn’t have to be so mean about it. Yes, we need to hear it in those words sometimes, but don’t bash on her. We can be more caring instead of saying ohh Miley dresses so trashy. Instead, we can say she dresses very immodestly. Also pray for them.

It’ sad how Miley’s life is going. She called out for help to God in her song “The climb” you have to search it on youtube. Just write in “the climb backwards” it breaks my heart that she used to be an icon to young girlss, and now she’s oblivious to the fact that 7-9 year old still see her and follow her example. I’m not a fan of her dress. But the oher one is GORGEOUS! I am so happy I saw information about thin website in my youth magazine. You’re a great rolemodel Nicole!

Mileys outfit could have been cute if her skirt was alot longer and she wore a shirt underneath the jacket… But since she didn’t.. Her outfit was completely inappropriate! And Kate is the only reason more classy stuff is coming back into style! So I hope people start looking to her as far as looking up to someone who is confident.. Cause she does a lot of charity work and is a good role model… In both dress and in other ways!

Miley needs to realize that being a pop star doesn’t mean you have to look like the stereotypical one, where you act like a diva and dress insanely. Kate’s dress is beautiful and people need to treat everyone the same. It doesn’t matter if you’re a popstar or a duchess or an average girl; you should be shown the same respect and they should all dress the right way.

  22. Project Inspired Member

i hated what miley wore. it made her look a bit older. lets keep these people in prayer. i like the duchess dress now its beautiful

  23. Project Inspired Member

bleh cyrus just looks gross in general, but Kate has some true class and beauty :)

  24. Project Inspired Member

I love the duchess’ style!! I think it’s modest and classy.

  25. xJesusLovesYoux

that was the most disturbing thing ive seen on her yet. if she wants to show that shes comfortable in her skin, wear something modest, but cute. a thigh high dress with elbow length sleeves with a cut out oval in the middle of the sleeves would have been perfect. but this? no.

  26. Project Inspired Member

I used to LOVE Miley Cyrus. She would talk about her faith and she was a good role model on “Hannah Montana.” Then she came out with her “CANT BE TAMED” album and shocked all of America. It’s really sad because I think she is extremely beautiful and she is proud and confident but she uses those assets in the wrong way. I think what an amazing role model she could’ve been if she had made better choices. She could be shining a light for God.

    • BrittanyLovesYouu

Ok so maybe we don’t approve of what Miley wore or usually wears, but that gives you NO right to disresepct her, calling her trashy and saying she’s “gross in general”. I love Miley Cyrus no matter what, she’s a beautiful girl and doesn’t deserve to be put down, especially on a christian website!

  27. Project Inspired Member

I have no issue with either dress. I think they’re both cute and I l wear both of them. But if you’re going to comment on Miley’s neckiline, you should comment Kate’s as well. I’ve looked at the reviews of clothing on other articles on this website and by your standards of clothing Kate would have a plunging neckline as well.

  28. Project Inspired Member

miley cyrus looks disgusting, i do not think her outfit conveys courage or confidence, the duchess’s outfit is way better its sooo pretty. I actually love the lace in the back

  29. thespiritualwarrior7

One thing I, as a 13-year-old girl, will never understand, is the need people feel to dress like that. Why? She may get more attention dressing like that, but is it the attention she wants?
-and i love Kate’s dress! It is such a pretty color!

  30. Project Inspired Member

I absolutely love Kate’s dress!:D as for Miley though I’ve (unfortunatley) kind of come to expect that kind of thing:( I was reading a magazine a while ago and it had pics of Miley from when her career started to 2011 and the difference in the modesty of her outfits was amazing!D:

  31. Project Inspired Member

Miley you need to change your closet. 1. Your pregnet. 2. Your giving kids the wrong message and what your doing with your life. What are you trieing to do with your life? I use to go to your conserts all the time but until the worst got in you which changed you. Good Luck with the rest of your life!

  32. Project Inspired Member

One girl at my school wore a skirt waaay shorter than that. It was horrid. I couldnt believe her mother let her wear it!!

  33. Project Inspired Member

Royalty is expected to be modest and beautiful that really talks about respect, not so much about celebrities like miley though…

  34. Project Inspired Member

I think that since Miley basically got famous by being much loved among younger kids, she probably thinks that when people look at her, they still see the child star of “Hannah Montana”, and she wants to change that, by making people see all skin. I think that if she wants to look more grown up, she is going COMPLETELY in the wrong direction. It’s sad :(

  35. lulublue72

I liked Miley Cyrus before, and thought she was okay. She said she thanked the lord in her music CDs. But now? I can’t believe her. I don’t like who she’s become. And I am really upset about Selena Gomez now showing skin. She was the one singer I looked up to, and somebody is leading her to the wrong path! Today I saw a little girl who looked about 7, wearing a sports bra and short-shorts! Like seriously? Who lets their children wear that? Im not sure if she got the idea from a celebrity, or her parents are not very good at taking care of their daughter, but kids these days are learning the wrong things.

I think even the dress of the Duchess of Cambridge that her clothes is too revealing. How they say that it is too revealing that’s true and that they say that she is half naked. That also shows how respected she is more than the other celebrities.
