What to Wear to Youth Group

Every week, I go through the “Girl Talk” section of Project Inspired and look for those seeking advice and counsel. I want to help answer some questions you may have about living out your Christian life and walk of faith! We want PI to be a safe place where you can ask questions.

This week a PI Girl asked for advice on what to wear to youth group and what is appropriate.

“I don’t know what to wear to youth group…I don’t want to be too casual. What do you normally wear to youth group?”

For youth group, you don’t need to be dressed up very fancy. Really, depending on the church, casual is probably just fine. Regarding modesty, yes, you will want to be conscious of how you dress, and will want to avoid tight clothing, short crop tops or revealing tops. Also, maybe stay away from dresses unless you are covered up and they aren’t too tight, and also make sure you are wearing leggings or that the dress isn’t too high up.

The idea behind “modest is hottest” isn’t to restrict you from being fashionable or pretty, but rather, godly guys prefer a woman who respects herself and what God says about her (Proverbs 31). You don’t need to dress sexy to get a guy’s attention, and if that is what you need for validation, the friendships or attention you get will be very shallow and fleeting. Also, you specifically don’t want to be a distraction for guys at church.

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. (1 Peter 3:3)

If you are in God’s house or outside of your place of fellowship, you should pretty much be representing the same image because you want to respect the house of God, but also you don’t need to be legalistic. Wherever you go, if you claim to be a Christian or Christ follower, you are representing the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:20). No, you don’t need to be perfect nor do you have to clean your act up before coming to God, but the idea behind what I am saying is that you don’t want to cause anyone to stumble (Romans 14:13-23).

Five Reasons to Dress Modestly at Youth Group

1. What you wear can represent how you respect yourself and others.

2. God says your beauty comes from inside, not the outside.

3. Don’t be a distraction; church fellowship and Bible study are about God.

4. Don’t get validation from man, but know your worth in Christ.

5. Know that wherever you go, you are a witness for Jesus and your faith.

My youth group is soo casual. With my group it’s a good idea to wear something comfortable in case you wind up getting dragged into floor hockey, volleyball, dodgeball, basketball, or some other crazy sport! Haha 😉 seriously though, I think for most youth groups a t-shirt and jeans/shorts is just fine. I’ve attended a few different ones and they’re all casual. 🙂 and yes, keep it modest!!

I’m always wondering what I should wear to youth group or church because I want to glorify God even by what I wear. I love to wear dresses with leggings and a light jacket but it’s not really possible in winter as it’s cold where I live. So in winter I usually wear jeans with a t shirt and hoodie or sweater. I usually wear a bit of makeup too, I have very fair complexion and light hair so when I’m not wearing makeup people are likely to come up and ask if I’m fully awake or not (haha). 🙂

Hey! I feel you on the not wanting to be too casual thing.
I usually wear a skirt or dress with leggings and a cardigan, it’s cold where I live, if it’s a study where we are sitting primarily.
If it’s a youth event with lots of games/sports, I’ll wear jeans and a tee shirt with a fun jacket/sweater and sneakers.
Modest doesn’t have to be frumpy! 🙂

I like to wear a classy inspired outfit, but I’m a little more formal and dressy. My sister wears youth camp and band t-shirts and jeans… Always!

I love to wear Christian band tshirts, a simple tee and jeans, or a hoodie! 🙂

Even though I now go to college Sunday school classes, my rule-of-thumb for Youth Group dressing has never really changed: On Sundays, I’ll wear a nice, cute outfit with a blazer, just like I would for school. For Wednesday Night youth groups, I’ll probably go casual — or really, what I wore to school that day, which will probably involve some kind of skinny jean, comfortable pants (I’m not into wearing leggings as pants, because I think they were meant to be worn under skirts and dresses) or a blazer.

I do own crop tops, but those are always reserved for school and never show too much skin. I don’t mind showing off a tiny bit of my stomach with a crop top and a pair of high-waisted palazzo pants. I like to show off my curves — I always think flattery is super important when I get dressed because I am a size 8/9 — but I also like to be tasteful with my attire.
