In our society, our culture tells us to be greedy, to climb the ladder of success, to look out for our own interests and to be self-loving. The Bible teaches the opposite of selfishness, which is to be a servant. The Lord teaches us that when we are giving, we will refresh our souls. We know that when we give, God says we will always have enough; God will bless us back so much more that we won’t be able to contain the amount of blessings that He will bestow upon us.
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. (Proverbs 11:25)
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. (Luke 6:35)
Jesus, the Son of God, even humbled himself off the throne and came in the form of a servant to set us all free from sin and death. Christ (the awaited Messiah and Savior) says that the ones who humble themselves shall be exalted and those who are haughty or proud shall be brought low (James 4:10).
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” (Malachi 3:10)
Giving and serving is the best way to cure any form of sadness, loneliness, depression or anxiety. When you get your eyes off of yourself, you realize that we as humans are all broken and need community. We all need love and it is healthy to serve and to be selfless. God Almighty created us to be worshippers and to give; we were not designed to take and be stingy. The Word of God is clear about what happens when we give: that God will honor it (Mark 12:41-44).
Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. (Deuteronomy 15:10)
The righteous gives and does not hold back. (Proverbs 21:26)
