We all have our favorite celebrities. Whether an actress or a musician, we find ourselves growing loyal to a celebrity or two that we admire.
Here on Project Inspired, I write mostly on Culture Shock. And often, celebrities are discussed or used as examples. I like to offer up celebrities as role models. Role models are great–primarily because it’s always easier to emulate someone you can see, someone tangible, someone you can relate to and aspire to be like.
But role models are just a reference point, and they are just human. They all make mistakes. And when they do, I sometimes call them out, and this doesn’t always go down well with fans. Don’t forget, I point out negative actions or acts that we should learn from as Christians. But still, some fans will defend their favorite celebs to the end.
Defending your favorite celeb is not a bad thing. Whether it’s Swift, Bieber or Gaga, I’m sure you would defend these celebrities to the end if they were criticized by your peers, friends or family members. In fact, I know you would. I read your comments.
But my question is, would you defend Jesus as strongly as you defend your favorite celebrity?
This is a rhetorical question, not an admonishment. I’m really interested in your thoughts on this. And I base the question on the comments I read. I’ve noticed that a lot of passion goes into defending a celebrity. And that’s okay, but what about Christ?
Have you ever discussed Jesus with your friends or peers? Have you ever been in a position where someone is saying something derogative or mean or hurtful about Jesus, and if so, have you spoken out for Him and defended Him until the end? Or have you backed down, given up or just avoided the subject altogether?
But continue in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing of whom you have learned them; And that from a child you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works (2 Timothy 3:14-17).
I hope you have defended God when the need arose. And I hope you defended Him with as much, if not more, passion than you would your favorite celebrity. I assume you know Jesus more than any celebrity. And what you don’t know, you can look up in scripture–remember, we are asked to use what we have learned about God, “for doctrine…reproof…correction…and instruction.”
It’s great to have a role model to look up to. But never forget that the best role model is Jesus Christ. Don’t hold your favorite celebrities in higher regard than you would Jesus. And always defend Him to the highest degree.
PI ladies, have you ever found yourself defending Jesus?
