15 Bible Verses that Speak on Abortion and the Unborn

The topic of pregnancy and abortion has continued to stir controversy at the forefront of our media. In a world of opinions and complicated dynamics, it should be taken into account that Scripture has much to say about the sanctity of life and God’s purpose for the yet-born. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering where the heart of scripture lies on these issues, here are 15 of many verses you can begin with:

    1. Dedicate to me every firstborn among the Israelites. The first offspring to be born, of both humans and animals, belongs to me. (Exodus 13:12)

    2. He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land–your grain, new wine and olive oil–the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you. (Deuteronomy 7:13)

    3. You formed me with your hands; you made me, yet now you completely destroy me…You clothed me with skin and flesh, and you knit my bones and sinews together. You gave me life and showed me your unfailing love. My life was preserved by your care. (Job 10:8, 11-12)

    4. Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers? (Job 31:15)

    5. From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God. (Psalm 22:10)

    6. Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. (Psalm 127:3)

    7. You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:13)

    8. “This is what the LORD says– your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the Lord, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself” (Isaiah 44:24)

    9. Listen to me, all you in distant lands! Pay attention, you who are far away! The LORD called me before my birth; from within the womb he called me by name. (Isaiah 49:1)

    10. And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (Luke 1:42)

    11. This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19)

    Verses on purpose before birth:

    12. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. (Psalm 139:16)

    13. Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. (Ephesians 1:4)

    14. I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations. (Jeremiah 1:5)

    15. But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him… (Galatians 1:5)

We understand that this is a sensitive topic for many, but we also want to highlight that life begins not only at the moment of conception but in the heart and mind of God. Who are we to decide who gets to have a purpose or not? As believers, especially, these are things we must consider when it comes to the basis of innocent lives.
