The 4 Steps to Take When You’re Facing Temptation
Written by Christi Given | April 13, 2012
When facing temptation, what do you do? Temptation can be difficult to avoid, but these guidelines can strengthen you spiritually and help you be more aware of what the Bible says about temptation and sin.
1) If you are facing a situation where you don’t feel comfortable or you have a bad feeling, first you should pray. The Bible says:
If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to all people, so He will give you wisdom (James 1:5).
2) You should evaluate the fruit (the outcome) of what your choice would be. Is it beneficial to your faith or will it lead to destruction and regret?
The truly righteous man attains life, but he who pursues evil goes to his death (Proverbs 11:19).
The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace (Proverbs 13:5).
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death (Proverbs 14:12).
3) Know the company you keep. This is a VERY important point and I have a lot to say about this! If you surround yourself with godly, uplifting friends, you are more likely to blossom in your walk with God. On the other hand, if you are hanging out with the wrong crowd, they can corrupt your behavior.
The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God (Psalm 92:12).
My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. If they say, ‘Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for someone’s blood, let’s waylay some harmless soul, let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; throw your lot in with us, and we will share in a common purse’–my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths for their feet rush to sin (Proverbs 1:10-15).
If you are being pressured, evaluate the people you are with. If they respect you and believe in alignment with your beliefs, you can strengthen one another.
As iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend (Proverbs 27:17).
Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
If they are misleading you, pray God will allow you to be a light and also for God to bring positive, godly friends to encourage you and to walk with you. At first it may be hard to say no or to do the unpopular thing, but Jesus is watching and is on your side! You are never alone!
Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).
The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out (Proverbs 13:9).
4) In any situation in which you’re being tempted, remember that God will always give you a way out!
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it (1 Corinthians 10:13).
In the end, it will pay off to not give into temptation and you will be glad you didn’t! God says to ask for His help and He will guide and lead you. If you are struggling with a certain issue or are unsure what to do next, ask a mentor for prayer and guidance. Always make sure you pray and seek God’s counsel as well!
