Girlies, who’s going to prom soon? A lot of women wince when they look back at their prom photos (ask your mom or aunt!). Why? Many of us wore trendy dresses that have since gone out of style–WAY out of style! So, our advice for first-time prom goers is to keep your dress classy and simple while still putting your personality into it.
For those in warmer climates, you might buck the floor-length trend and go for something shorter. Or, if it’s a little chilly where you are during prom season, you can always consider tights and a wrap.
Check out our five picks for shorter prom dresses below!
This dress is perfect for a lady who likes coverage up top and some flounce in the skirt! Red is a timeless dress color, but the Peter Pan collar and pleated skirt give the look a fresh nod while keeping it classy. (ModCloth, $40)
This knit shift dress screams romance and is effortlessly elegant and ladylike. The intricate lace neck is a unique look that will surely make you stand out in the crowd–in a good way! (ModCloth, $55)
If you’re thinking, “This is prom; where’s the glitter!?” then this dress might be the best choice for you! The periwinkle shade definitely screams “prom,” and we love the taffeta lining and glittery mesh skirt. It’s also available in champagne. (JCPenney, $25)
Who’s ready to dance? You’ll look great on the dance floor in this flared dress. Check out that gorgeously eye-catching red rosette strap! Scared the stripes make it look less formal? Check out the ModCloth page, where members who have purchased the dress have posted photos of themselves. Nearly all of them are at formal events–and looking fab! (ModCloth, $58)
If you really want to sparkle from head to toe, this gorgeous ombre black-to-blue party dress might be for you. Not many life occasions call for this much glitter, so take advantage of the chance to wear something shiny! A black cardigan or bolero would be the perfect (modest!) finishing touch. (JCPenney, $25)

These are really pretty! Love the JCPennys!
All these are soo beautiful. I especially love the knit shift dress from modcloth, the flared strapped dress from JCpenny with the rosette strap and the ombre sequined blue-black dress.
Oh my gosh I LOVE that striped one after seeing people try it on! Would SO wear that!
Those are pretty! My definite favorites were the striped one and the red one. So gorgeous!
I love the bottom one! and the second ones ok, so is the purple, but I feel like the others arent reall “prom”-y
I agree. I didnt think the first ones were right for prom. More like date night or a night on the town…
Yeah They are cute, but not really fancy
Eeeeep! I love the blue one and the striped one! That’s a gorgeous color, and the striped one has a really cute almost nautical look going on.
I intend on avoiding any prom-ish gatherings for as long as possible, but I LOVE the striped one and the one with the black lace collar. So sophisticated and elegant!
I LOVE the ombre dress! It’s gorgeous. I also really like the one with the lace neck… due to the obsession I’ve had with lace lately (:
Ick, I hate those first two. They’re not very promish…And I think they’re kinda frumpy. But I think nearly everything with a Peter Pan collar looks frumpy…
Love the last two though, those are so cute!
The third one’s cute too, but the last two are my favorites. 😀
Plus when you go on the website the red one has a LACE BACK. I’m pretty sure they would frown upon that… just saying
Oh goodness. That is hysterical!
If they ever frown upon a dress with a lace back…I’m SO bringing this up. Mehehehehe.
Hahaha I will too
I agree with you completely! (:
I LLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEE that pink one!! I LOVE LACE and I LOVE the design on the top! I WANT IT!
I love the blue dresses and the stripped one! They are soo adorable!! I love polka dot dresses, though! Right now, i have two of them!!
I love the blue dress from JCPenneys!!! It`s so beautiful and just my style!!! Thanks for making these posts!!! It would be great if you will make another post with some longer prom dresses too!!!
I love the striped it is fun yet classy <3
Ehhhh…. I liked the black sparklie one best, but it was too low for my liking.
I always like the dresses I find on modcloth, however most of then are made of polyester. Polyester is cheap and modcloth is expensive. Also polyester gathers heat so it doesn’t breath well. Within 2 hours you’ll be sweating…so girls when you buy clothes of all kinds make sure to see whats it made out of!
I love 1, 2 and 5 best. <3
The first two are my favorite, but I definitely wouldn’t wear them to prom. 😛
I love the last one, the sparkle, the color, all of it! I already have my dress bought and picked out, it’s gorgeous! I got it for $20 at Goodwill, but it needs to be pressed and cleaned… it’s a maroon floorlength dress with a corset top, and i’m in love with it!
love the JCP dresses the most!!!
I have so many issues fitting dresses, I’m not exactly the thinnest girl around, nor the tallest or the best figure wise..but I do love these dresses, especially the last one, I just wish I had a better figure to pull them off 😛
I love some of Thes dresses. My fav is the black and white stripes.
I don’t know about these…I’ve always thought of prom dresses as long and flowy. I get mad when people wear short dresses to prom actually haha but I’m not sure if that’s just the schools in my area or whatever. They are cute, just not for prom IMHO
haha i made a picture with that striped dress on polyvore. all of the dresses are beautiful <3
U have apolyvore? No way me too!! Follow me @applebypie123 and @candy-tip-girls and I’ll follow u back!
i love the modcloth one!!!
I really love the last three!
I love the blue/black ombre dress! For prom though I prefer more glamorous, floor-length dresses 🙂
The third one is the one i posted on my fashion blog in Girl Talk. 🙂 I’m glad Nicole’s posting my kinda style. I also like the fourth.
The lace necked and the periwinkle colored dresses are fairly cute, the last dress is pretty exciting looking, but the red Peter Pan collared dress and the striped dress look…horrible. In my opinion, anyway.
I LOVE the top two!! So classy.
I love the Modcloth dress, but wish for more length! In honor of my up coming formal I’ve decided to do a Modcloth review! Here goes:
Modcloth is an adorable online apparel company that sports clothing that reminds of of the past. With it’s vintage like styles and crazy patterns, every PI girl should love it! Their site is fantastically organised and quiet clean. While some items (mostly dresses) were shorter or more low cut than I have taste for, most items were fine and dandy. The styles nod at previous era’s and do so in a cute and fashionable way. Got a favorite time period? They have a dress. From flapper’s to 50’s the threads are nifty!
