5 Ways That God Showed Up in Baltimore
Written by Cynthia Onyejiji | April 29, 2015
Over the past few days, our social media feeds have been flooded with images and videos of chaotic scenes in Baltimore. We’ve seen cars set ablaze, local stores looted and grizzly altercations between police and protesters. However, amidst all the rubble and negativity, there are still glimmering signs of God’s love in Baltimore.
The media may choose not to highlight them all, but we feel it’s necessary to acknowledge His presence whenever we see it. So here are the 5 ways that God showed up in Baltimore:
1. Young Boy Hands Water to Police

In this pic, a young boy crosses the invisible line separating the police from the protesters, in order to offer up a bottle of water. While many others are angry with the police officers, this young man was able to see past that and think about the needs of others. That’s pretty Godly!
2. Mother Scolds Son for Rioting
This mother spotted her son out from among the rioters and let’s just say, she wasn’t too happy about it. After publicly scolding him (as if that’s not embarrassing enough!), she made him leave the scene. In an interview with CBS News, the mother said “that’s my only son, and at the end of the day, I don’t want him to be a Freddie Gray…but to stand up there and vandalize police officers, that’s not justice.” So, where’s God in this? Well, Proverbs 19:18 says that parents should discipline their children while there is still hope. And that’s exactly what this mother did. Someone get her an award for ‘Mom of the Year”!
3. Protesters Hoist Up Hearts of Love
While some protesters chose to fight with fire and their fists, these gentleman picked the most powerful weapon of them all, love. There’s nothing on earth that can take on a force like God’s love. Can we get an amen?!
4. Protesters in Support of Peace

Some protesters formed a line in front of the police officers to protect them and to promote peace. In that moment, there was God. “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. (Psalms 34:14)
5. Children Assist with Clean-up Efforts

Lastly, the rioters have left quite a big mess behind. As such, there are countless images of Baltimore residents cleaning up the streets and boarding up broken windows. These children, barely even old enough to understand what’s going on, pitched in to help. This is so great to see because the Bible says, “train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it (Psalms 22:6).” Although these children are surrounded by chaos and negativity, it’s important to show them how to find the good in any situation and how to be one of God’s dutiful soldiers.
We’re sure there are many more ways that God has showed up in Baltimore. However, we wanted to take this moment to highlight a few, so that everyone is reminded that God is always present, especially when His children need Him most.
