5 Ways to Stay Consistent With Devotions During a Schedule-less Summer

Is it just me, or is it harder to stay consistent with devotions during the summertime? Although summer is often laid-back, there’s something about the lack of structure that makes it really difficult to keep up with my routines.

So if you’re right there with me, here are five ways that can help us stay consistent—even without a structured schedule.

1. Use a new devotional or Bible reading plan.

Does anyone else get excited about a new, summer-length Bible study? I do! Sometimes that’s all the extra motivation I need for the summer. Here are a few summer-length devotionals and Bible studies you could try. Is there anything else you’d add to this list?

2. Set an alarm.

No, not for waking up (who wants that in summer?), but for spending time with God. Some people find it helpful to make their devotions the one constant in their daily routine. You could spend time with God while drinking coffee and eating breakfast, right before bed or at some other point during the day. But if you make a routine of it, and even set your alarm to remind yourself at the same time each day, that can help you stay consistent.

3. Set aside weekly God-dates.

It sounds super cheesy (sorry), but actually put in your calendar that you’ll be spending an hour or two with God on a certain afternoon. Even as you’re spending a little bit of time with Him each day, plan a longer “date” with Him once a week to really touch base and spend quality time together. Maybe you’ll do it at your favorite coffee shop or down by the water, somewhere you’re soaking in summer—with God. You could bring a Christian book that encourages your heart, music to listen to and your journal to write out some prayers. Here are a few of my favorite books to use on dates with God:

4. Start (or join) a Bible study.

What better way to stay consistent than to have built-in accountability? Get some of your friends together and start a weekly Bible study! You could go through a book of the Bible together, or just talk about what you were learning that week in your time with God. If you keep that time truly focused on God, with friends who really want to stay consistent, you can encourage each other all summer long.

5. Check in with Him throughout your day.

Each day, try to check in with God multiple times. Every few hours, just take a couple of minutes to remember how much He loves you and talk with Him about your day. Share it all with Him—all the adventures and excitement of summer. Inviting Him into each moment doesn’t have to look super-spiritual; it can simply be whispering up a “thank you” or a “God, this is so cool!” as you go about your day. And that can help you learn to abide in Him.
