“American Idol” Contestant Colton Dixon: A Christian First
Written by T.M. Gaouette | March 21, 2012
Are you a fan of American Idol contestant Colton Dixon? A devout Christian born in Tennessee, Dixon is climbing his way up the ladder of Idol success.
This is Dixon’s second attempt at American Idol. He first auditioned for season 10 with his sister Schyler, but neither made it to the Top 24. This year, Schyler returned to audition for season 11 and Colton was by her side for support. The judges convinced him to audition, too. Both he and his sister made it in, but unfortunately, she was eventually cut. Colton is still going strong.
The following clip is of Dixon’s Top 13 performance of Stevie Wonder’s song “Lately.”
Dixon has a strong faith and he’s very proud and open about it. Unfortunately, this has been a cause of contention recently.
As social media is Idol‘s prime method of promotion, the American Idol producers expect all their finalists to partake in it. However, they do have specific guidelines in place, it seems. In an interview with Today, Dixon revealed he’d been warned to avoid posts that were too religious or political for fear they would turn off some voters.
Nonetheless, Dixon refuses to compromise his faith for the sake of votes.
But, you know, being a Christian is who I am. It is a part of me musically. It is what I want to do after the show –go into Christian music (Colton Dixon).
When one user accused him of trying to be Tim Tebow, Dixon tweeted, “I don’t follow Tebow, I follow a guy named Jesus. I’m just trusting His plans. Whatever that may be.”
American Idol attracts many artists of Christian faith. And lots of them have seen success, including Chris Daughtry, Mandisa, Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen, Scotty McCreery, and especially Carrie Underwood.
American Idol is a great opportunity for real talent to rise to the top. And I get so excited whenever an inspirational person is elevated in Hollywood. Dixon’s talent is amazing and it’ll lead him to real success. But beyond that talent is his devotion to God. It is faith that will truly fulfill him.
I pray Dixon never loses that devotion and that God holds him close, blesses his journey and keeps him humble–things most Hollywood celebrities lack.
Are you a fan of Colton Dixon? Have you ever been asked to put your faith aside? How did you react?
