American Idol’s Danny Gokey Starts Charity Foundation for the Homeless

American Idol finalist Danny Gokey, a former country musician who’s now a Christian artist, is not only a singer, but also a believer. He started an organization called the Sophia’s Heart foundation for homeless youth and their families.
The former music director from Milwaukee, Wis., says that the mission is “motivating at-risk youth and families toward perpetual success through music and arts, transitional housing, leadership training and family strengthening using a Christian-centered approach.” The Sophia’s House organization also hopes to “embrace, strengthen, educate and inspire.”
The Sophia’s Heart foundation was birthed after Danny’s wife, Sophia, passed in 2008. She had a heart condition and was never able to see her dream of being a mother fulfilled, so Danny hopes that he can pass on her legacy of her love for children by helping those in the Wisconsin and Nashville, Tenn., areas.
Danny said that his vision for the foundation is “one heart touching many.” Wow, how powerful is this organization and what a strong man of God to pass on help to others in need when he himself had to deal with such a struggle of the loss of his wife, at only 27 years of age, when she went home to be with Jesus!
Danny’s foundation gives those who are in need opportunities and assistance they probably wouldn’t have if he had not initiated this wonderful charity. Danny said, “Our culturally relevant music and arts program in Milwaukee has become an educational and supportive service staple among underserved youth across the greater community who would not otherwise have those opportunities.”
The charity also provide transitional housing for people in emergencies such as floods and other unforeseen events (for example, Nashville, 2010). According to their official website: “Since its inception, the program has helped more than 75 families accomplish long-term housing solutions. In addition, due to the unique nature of the program, which allows families to stay together during the transition, it maintains a waiting list of many more families in need of support. It is our desire to expand the program and accommodate up to 150 families per year with your support.”

Regardless of supporting the charity financially, we can all be praying for Danny’s music career and for his influence, for his healing from his loss, and for his charity to be blessed and to continue to help others. We can also inform people about this wonderful cause.
