April Book Club: “Firsthand: Ditching Secondhand Religion for a Faith of Your Own”

Hi to all my sweet Book Club girls,

I hope you all had a great Easter celebrating the best day in history–the day that Jesus Christ defeated death and paid the price for our sins! My love for Him grew in my heart when I was in my early 20s, and I am so glad you get a chance to know Him sooner. That’s why I can’t wait for us to dive in to this month’s Book Club selection, Firsthand: Ditching Secondhand Religion for a Faith of Your Own by Ryan and Josh Shook.

Josh and Ryan are brothers, and their dad is a pastor. They are both in their 20s, and they started realizing in their teens that their Christian beliefs had mostly been passed down by their parents. They discovered that they needed to decide for themselves if they wanted to be Christians. They needed to get to know Jesus personally, not rely on “secondhand” faith.

So they read a lot of great Christian and historical classics, read and re-read the Bible and talked to a lot of people about their beliefs. Then they put the most powerful, life-changing things they discovered in this book! Josh and Ryan want our generation not to have the reputation of leaving Christianity and the church, but of reclaiming and reshaping it because of our own personal and powerful belief in Christ.

In this book, they give practical ways to get closer to Jesus and stay close to Him, share other people’s stories, give advice about overcoming habits and hang-ups and reveal ways to get involved in Christian community. I love Firsthand, and I know you will too.

Please join us in reading this book during April. It’s easy and fun to read, but it’s packed with things that will change your life! You can order Firsthand here, and we’ll talk about it later this month in my NicoleLIVE! video chat. So come along for the ride. I know you’ll be very glad you did.

Hugs and Kisses,

Nicole

I would love if for the next book we read “Secret Keeper: The Delicate Power of Modesty” by Dannah Gresh! I see a lot of disagreements on the Modest is Hottest pages about modesty – Such as if a guy has lustful thoughts if it is his fault and what makes something unmodest. My church used it as a book for a Bible Study. It changed me from being resentful about having to dress modestly to wanting to dress as modestly as possible! She even explains how a guys mind works when he sees a girl dressed immodestly. Here are some questions she answers: “Why can’t I wear what everyone else is wearing? Aren’t you just hung up on your old sense of fashion? Things change! Why are my parents so hung up on this thing? They just don’t get it! Isn’t it really the guy’s problem? To me it’s just fashion!”
