Avril Lavigne Music Video “Head Above Water” About Crying Out to God

Avril Lavigne just released her music video for “Head Above Water,” about her fight with Lyme disease and overcoming obstacles. Even though the song is not “Christian” necessarily, it has an inspirational message. Lavigne’s lyrics talk about her going to the altar and falling to her knees.

There is definitely a purity movement rising in Hollywood and the music business is changing for sure. It may be a slow process to change the airwaves, but regardless, it is evident that many big singers are changing their lyrics. There is still, of course, some dark music out there, but we see the messages improving over time.

In 2015, Lavigne opened up and had just started treatment for Lyme disease. From ABC News: “I’m about halfway through my treatment,” the Canadian singer said in an interview with ABC News’ Jesse Palmer. “I’m doing a lot better. Seeing a lot of progress. … I’m just really grateful to know that, like, I will make [a] 100 percent recovery.”

From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: “Lyme disease is caused by bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migraines.” [Source: cdc.gov]

Here are some of Lavigne’s lyrics:

God keep my head above water

    Don’t let me drown

    It gets harder

I’ll meet you there at the altar

As I fall down to my knees

    Don’t let me drown

    Don’t let me drown

    Don’t let me drown

Keep my head above water above water

And I can’t see in the stormy weather

I can’t seem to keep it all together

And I can’t swim the ocean like this forever

    And I can’t breathe

God keep my head above water

I lose my breath at the bottom

    Come rescue me

    I’ll be waiting

I’m too young to fall asleep
