Bible Study: Can Sin Prevent Blessings in My Life?

Can sin prevent or block blessings from your life? Does obedience matter? The answer is yes. We can’t earn our way to God by being a “good person” or just by believing without works, because “faith without works is dead…” (James 2:14), but faith and a life surrendered to God will result in a blessed life. Those who honor God, He will honor (1 Samuel 2:30). We will also be more in tune with the Spirit if we are walking in God’s Word, seeking Him daily and heeding His voice. Remember, the Israelites (God’s people, in the Old Testament) went around the same mountain for 40 years because of disobedience when they could have just obeyed and simply entered the Promised Land (Joshua 5:6). Easier said than done, but yes. But the KEY to obtaining God’s best for your life and His blessings is by listening to His Word and obeying it (James 1).

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (James 1:22)

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands. (Deuteronomy 7:9)

The Bible is not just a book of rules for dos and don’ts, but rather a book of stories and testimonies on how to live your life and how not to live your life; how to walk with God and be blessed, or to go your own way or after idolatry and forsake God and be separated from Him. God desires to bless and lavish on His children! Just like an earthly Father wants to bless his child, but can’t when the child is rebellious or ignoring his advice, amen? (Luke 11:13)
The Israelites had moved about in the desert forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the LORD. For the LORD had sworn to them that they would not see the land that he had solemnly promised their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. (Joshua 5:6)
Deuteronomy 28 in the Old Testament of the Bible clearly says that by obeying and honoring God in your life (not by being perfect, but by listening to His Word and by honoring Him), you will be blessed going in and blessed going out.
Blessings for Obedience

If you FULLY obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God. You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. (Deuteronomy 28:1-3)

The Bible is also very clear on what happens when you are disobedient and it says curses can come upon a person’s life when they do not heed God’s voice, instruction or warning (Deuteronomy 28:15-68). Yikes, sounds intense, but it makes sense. If God is our Father, He will discipline those He loves not to harm us, but to take His rod or staff as a shepherd does to bring back the sheep into the fold. Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and if you are a spirit-filled believer—and you believe Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God who died on the cross and rose on the third day, defeating death and proving He was the Son of Man—then you should have the Holy Spirit that guides you, and you should be able to hear His voice (John 10).
If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! (Luke 11:13)
All to say, God has BIG blessings for you and your life, and He desires to give them to you, precious daughter of the King! Remember, we are fixing our eyes on Jesus and running the race of faith to win the prize in eternity, which is eternal life with God! He even bestows a crown on us and we will have the crown of life. That is one of the BIGGEST blessings, amen? I want to be obedient and I want to honor God in Jesus’ name throughout my life…do you?
Let us ask Jesus to grant us the ability to have faith and to trust in God and to walk with Him fully, regardless of circumstances or emotions, amen? (Jeremiah 1/Jeremiah 29:11/Ephesians 3:20)

Where this type of teaching gets dangerous is the thought that if we do all we’re to do, if we’re obedient, don’t sin, that things will inevitably go our way because God’s going to bless you. We must let our sisters know that this Christian walk is not an easy one. It is not for the faint of heart. God promises to love us and never leave, but He also promises that we will experience hardships. I just want to make sure that is clearly understood because I’ve learned that even when you’re doing everything right by the good ole’ book, God will still send tests and heartache and unseen circumstances your way. So you must keep that in mind and don’t think that by merely being obedient, you’re going to receive “blessings.”

Please pray for me, you all. I’m struggling with sin right now and I need a Word.
