If you want to be more on fire for Jesus, it is important to realize that God’s Word is the source of increasing your faith. As we lean into God’s presence and His Word, we grow spiritually and our faith increases (Romans 10:17). What we focus on, what we feed ourselves, then comes out of us. It says in the Word in Luke 6:45: “For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” You need to feed your faith if you want it to grow and if you want to live it out.
…But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.… (Ephesians 5:3-5)
If you want to be a spiritual athlete, you will need to be disciplined and go on a diet from the world, so to speak. This means dieting from secular music or vulgar media. Absorb what will honor and please God, and start purifying yourself for the Lord to be able to use you and fill you up as you empty yourself of the selfish flesh we have. It’s not easy, but it’s how you become more passionate. Instead of listening to Jay-Z, listen to Lecrae or Andy Mineo or worship music. If you are wanting to hear good music but without the cursing or coarse lyrics, try listening to other positive music, like Kari Jobe, Britt Nicole, Owl City, Tenth Avenue North, Switchfoot and other bands that speak life and truth. Their passion will fuel your passion, and what you speak out of your mouth has power (Proverbs 18:21).
I am a living witness of the effects of the power of music as I am a singer-songwriter and I listen to the lyrics. Most of the popular music, TV shows and films glorify death, sex, drugs, scandal and divinations. When my life started to change for the better and when God opened doors for ministry, it was when I started listening to Christian worship music more and more, and less of the secular, and my mind was literally renewed by truth, hope, life, light and connecting me to God’s presence and love (Romans 12:2).
Please listen to me, PI Girls, I am telling you, the music you listen to matters! Don’t deceive yourself! The television shows and movies matter, too! If you are feeding yourself demonic media, how do you expect to grow and be used by God? You don’t need to be addicted to the worldly media. What you focus on and chase after, you become like. Let us chase Jesus and the Holy Word of God.
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. (Romans 12:11)
Five Verses on Increasing Your Faith and Passion for the Lord
1. Read God’s word: Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
2. Pray: Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with ALL your heart.”
3. Be around like-minded believers: 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?”
4. Less of us, more of Jesus: If we want more passion and faith, we need less of ourselves and more of the Lord.
He must become greater; I must become less. (John 3:30)
5. Walk in the spirit, not the flesh or in carnality: If we want to be more radiant for the Lord and to have more zeal, we need to be in the world and not of it. We need to follow Christ, not follow the world or try to copy the worldly systems.
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Galataians 5:16)
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2)
Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. (2 Timothy 2:21)
