Bible Study: How to Know God’s Will?
Written by Christi Given | February 24, 2019
This week, on Project Inspired, I wanted to address how do we navigate to know God’s will for us? First, we must read the word of God to hear God’s voice. The scriptures say we will hear the holy spirits guidance behind us, through God’s voice and leading to show us where to go. Next we need to be in communication to God and in prayer. The final direction for navigating God’s will is obedience and applying his word.
“You will hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way. Follow it, whether it turns to the right or to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21)
The Word of God is so powerful and is full of wisdom and truth. We can know where to go by hearing the Holy Spirit when we ask Jesus for interception and to help guide us. We need to be still before God and have alone time to hear His still, small voice. When we need directions to a destination we punch the address in through map-quest or through Waze and the voice guides us. The same goes for God, when we seek His council, He will give us wisdom generously.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)
YES, NO, MAYBE OR WAIT
Sometimes in life God says yes, no, maybe or WAIT. Waiting is not easy and doesn’t necessarily mean the answer is a yes or no. This requires patience or long suffering, a fruit of the Holy Spirit. We tend to want things now in the microwave and social media generation but we must trust God and He will guide our path. (Proverbs 3:5) Be patient and wait on the Lord. Typically when you need to make a turn, Siri will tell you how much time before you need to make a change. God sometimes warns us when we need to make a lane change or life shift. We will know because Jesus is faithful and kind if we obey and listen to his instructions.
“Jesus, the AUTHOR and FINISHER of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)
We must realize that God knows the end from the beginning. God is the alpha and the omega, the first and the last. God is the GREAT I AM. God knows the story from the beginning, middle, and the ending. God says in His word that He is the author and finisher of our faith. God is able to do beyond what we can imagine. (Ephesians 3:20) We need to seek His wisdom and council for answers so that we can do His perfect will.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13)
If we neglect His word or His voice we can get on the wrong path, can take the wrong turn and or may have to back track. Just like the Israelites circled the mountain in the desert for over 40 years because of disobedience, we too, can delay our promise land. We must be willing to obey even when we can’t see or don’t know what it looks like. We must be willing to remember that God is sovereign, He is in control and His plans are better than you have even for yourself. (Isaiah 55)
God will show you where to go and it will become more clear the closer you are to the shepard. Jesus is the one who guides us and we hear His voice and know it (recognize it), and we honor it because He is Lord of our lives as Christ followers. Many people may say different than what God says, which can make life difficult when making big choices.
Maybe you are deciding what college to attend to, who to date, who to marry, or who to even be roommates with in your dorm. All of these choices can alter our destinations. Just like when we are driving we can take stops along the way, see distractions on the road or we can even have traffic jams or delays, it’s all apart of the journey and the navigating of life. We need to acknowledge what will take us off course and guard against it and be willing to carry our cross at all costs to honor God.
Where is God leading you in life? Do you seek God’s council through His word and through prayer? I also recommend that you go to an authoritative figure in your life, such as your parents, mentors, guardians or youth leaders. The Bible says there is wisdom in the multitude of counselors. We must honor those who watch out for our souls and who are older and wiser than us. Make sure to seek Godly wisdom out when looking to make big decisions in life.
ASK GOD & MENTORS
God wants the BEST for you, although it’s not the easiest road. Jesus said NARROW is the way, (only a few find it), so you may need some alone time to seek God about His plans for your life and make sure it aligns with your passions and purpose in which you were created. Pray about the relationships around you and if they are feeding you spiritually and helping you to grow into a stronger Christ follower or away from God. Ask yourself what you need to do next in order to achieve the bigger goal with God.
Remember, at the end of our lives, all that will matter is if we honored God, loved people and won souls for the Kingdom of heaven. We must share the Gospel and he that be priority and then all else will follow and be added unto us. PI girls, we love you so much and we want you to know God has higher ways and thoughts and has plans to bless you and to give you hope for your future! Trust in His timing and His perfect will for you!
