Bible Study: We’re New Creations After Giving Our Lives to God

What does it mean to say something is “new”? When we use the word “new,” we usually mean something that has recently come into our lives that wasn’t there before. Sometimes new things are unique or one-of-a-kind, and other times they’re just a new acquisition, like a new outfit. Some things, like furniture or cars, can be made new or like new just by repainting or refinishing; they’re still the same underneath, but they look brand new on the outside.

In 2 Corinthians 5:17, the Bible calls us “new creatures” or “new creations” (depending on the Bible translation you prefer).

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold new things have come (2 Cor. 5:17, NASB).

So which kind of “new” are we? Have we been refinished like an old piece of furniture? Are we brand new but with many copies, like a new outfit?

No! This passage is from the New Testament, which is translated from Greek, so let’s take a look at what the Greek word we translate as “new” originally meant. The Greek word here is kainos, meaning “new, recently made, fresh, unused, of a new kind, unprecedented, uncommon and unheard of.”

What does this mean for us specifically? Well, it means that when we ask Jesus Christ into our lives as our Savior, God makes us brand new and unique. We are unheard of and unlike anything else in Creation.

God doesn’t just clean up our sins and make us look nice, like a car getting a fresh coat of paint–He makes us completely, sparkly, shiny, utterly new! God didn’t just clean up that sin we were carrying around before we gave our lives to Christ; He made us completely new and apart from it.

Girls, I know it doesn’t always feel that way–we still remember the sinful things we’ve done and memory can make it seem like those things are still part of us, but the Bible says they’re not. We’re not just clean, we’re fresh, and when we come to Christ we’re literally remade.

Girls, my prayer for you is that the next time you’re feeling like those sins from your past are still a part of you, remember that God remade you brand new and unique apart from any sins you may have committed before giving your life to Christ. Then tell those sins they have no power over you because God didn’t make them part of your new look!

Girls, has this quick look at 2 Corinthians 5:17 helped you to see yourself differently? Tell us how in the comments!

But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth (Ephesians 4:24).

    1. Psalm 103:12 says: “as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” God
has taken away our sins and put them away as far as the
east is from the west, setting you free from your old self
so that you could become completely new creations in
      Christ
