What Are the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and How Do I Practice Them?

What are the fruits of the spirit and how you bear the fruits of the spirit? The fruits of the spirit are the results of abiding in the vine and to Jesus. We must remain plugged into the word of God and into his power to produce good fruit. John 15, says that apart from God we can do NOTHING. It also talks about how God is a vinedresser and cuts off fruit that is bad.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

The Bible talks about walking, staying, dwelling, remaining connected to the true source of life: the living water, which is the Word of God and prayer. When we do that we protect ourselves from thoughts not aligned with Christ and behaviors that could fall into the works of the flesh and sin. God takes sin very seriously, we must aim towards the spirit verses walking in the flesh and carnal behavior.

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

The opposite of the fruits of the spirit are the works of the flesh. We have to continually stay filled with the spirit in order to avoid being full of our flesh. We must avoid feeding carnality. What we feed grows and what we starve dies. We must learn to starve our flesh and to be disciplined, and to feed our spirits with the word of God.

“Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping.’ Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?’ he asked Peter. ‘Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26: 40-43)

I’m Galatians chapter 5 to verse 19-21 says in the Bible,

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:19-21)

Practical Ways to Obtain The Fruits of the Spirit:

1.) Stay in Prayer- Ask Jesus for help by the Holy Spirit. You cannot do it alone.

“The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”

2.) Read the Holy Word- Read the Bible and obey it. (Don’t just listen to it and deceive yourself, but practice surrendering to the Word of God).

3.) Worship- Listening to praise music and focusing on God helps you stay in the spirit. Be careful of what music you listen to, watch what you let in your ear gates and eye gates as well.

I encourage you to write down a list of the fruits of spirit and the works of the flesh and to ask Jesus what you need to work on and what you desire to walk in. I want to personally work in the area of self-control, and long suffering, as it is not easy being patient but with God’s help we can do it.

PI girls, do you want to ask God for the fruits of the spirit and do you walk in them daily? What do you need to work on personally in the New Year to look more like Jesus?
