Bible Study: Who Is Jesus and Why Do We Need a Messiah?
Written by Christi Given | August 16, 2018
Many people know about Jesus or have heard of who he is from history. Even our historical years were framed from Christ’s birth (BC = before Christ; AD = after death). All of history hinges on the life of Christ and the death and resurrection of the awaited Messiah. There are literally thousands of prophesies from the Torah, the Pentateuch and the first half of the Bible before Jesus in the Old Testament that have come to pass in the second half of the Bible in the New Testament.
The Lord Jesus Christ is known as the Jewish-awaited Messiah. The Messianic Jewish believers are considered Christ followers, but have the cultural Jewish background and are saved. They believe in the cross, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, also known as Yeshua Hamashiach (in Hebrew). The Jewish people who do not believe Christ is the savior and one true King are still awaiting the Messiah. Christ (the savior) already came, died, rose again and fulfilled all of the prophesies of the Jewish prophets.
We must explain the importance of the need for a sacrifice, a savior; how Jesus was the sacrificial lamb, the high priest who went before us to shed his blood because we can’t earn God’s holiness. Our forgiveness was bought with the blood of the son of God. God sent Himself in the form of his son Jesus Christ, who had holy blood of the virgin birth through Mary for the sins of the world.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. (Hebrews 4:14)
Yeshua (Jesus Christ of Nazareth) is coming back again. We must invite people of all backgrounds to understand the need for the cross. Back in the Jewish traditions of long ago, they sacrificed the best offering they could to the rabbi or to the high priest. No one could go into the Holy of Holies except the high priest. The inner sanctuary was where God’s presence dwelled through the Ark of the Covenant. Jesus, when he died and rose again on the third day, proved that He was the son of God, defeated and conquered death, and the veil in the inner temple was torn (Matthew 27).
When Christ rose again, there was a curtain that separated us from Our Father, so the Son gave up his life because of the sin of Adam and Eve back in the garden that severed their intimate relationship. God is a god of relationship, not religion. We don’t have to do 100 prayers or bow down to a false god or false prophet to earn God’s love. God already nailed himself in the form of His son to prove His love.
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will, but to do the will of him who sent me. (John 6:38)
You may have heard about Jesus or your religion may teach you he was a prophet, but have you met Jesus? Have you encountered His love and kindness? Do you know that the Son of God came to earth off of his throne down as a sacrifice because without the shedding of blood, as the Jewish people know, there is no remission of sins. There is power in the blood of the lamb. There is power in real worship and sacrifice. There is power in a genuine offering.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)
Jesus said we must deny ourselves and carry our cross if we want to follow him. This is contrary to our world, our flesh and the temptations we face daily. We have to deny our flesh to increase in the spirit. This is only possible in receiving Christ as your savior, as your kinsman redeemer, as your attorney in the courts of heaven to pay your death penalty of eternal separation from the Father (the one true God and ultimate judge).
Do you want this free gift of salvation? Do you want to know Jesus Christ, Yeshua Hamashiach, as your personal friend, Lord, King and Savior? Then say this prayer if so, and the Holy Spirit will come inside of you and will dwell in you, and you will be born again, a new creature in Christ. The old ways and habits will be gone and the new will come!
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
Over time, as you commune with God in fellowship with other believers in a Bible-believing church, and as you read the Word daily, worship and pray, you will renew your mind and become more like Christ. Our aim as Christians, aka “Christ followers,” is to be “little Christs,” or to reflect the Lord as his sheep and him being our shepherd. We need to change the old ways, habits, past sins by accepting this free gift and walking in the spirit, not the flesh. With God, ALL things are possible. You can’t do it alone; you need God’s Holy Spirit to help you.
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. (Matthew 27:50-51)
I encourage you, PI ladies, to share the good news (aka the Gospel) with friends, family, neighbors, schoolmates and coworkers. Share God’s love and what he has done for you! Jesus is so good to us and we did not deserve the unmerited favor and grace our Lord gave to us. God the Father loves you so much and wants you to be his child adopted into His Kingdom as a royal princess. I pray you develop that deep, intimate relationship.
May the Holy Spirit dwell in you richly and you will know the height and depth of his everlasting love for you.
Feel free to comment below if you have prayer requests or comments about Jesus Christ. When did you meet him? When did you have get a personal relationship with God?
