Boyfriend Shaves His Head in Cancer Solidarity

We all want a partner who treats us right and will stand by us in both good times and bad. That’s why we’re super impressed with 18-year-old Riley Nicolay. His girlfriend and high school sweetheart, Deidre Sechi, was diagnosed with cancer in January. The two have been dating for almost three years and he is determined not to let her face this battle alone.

To prove his love and dedication, Nicolay posted a photo of himself and his lady with shaved heads on Reddit on Tuesday. Part of the caption reads, “Beautiful girlfriend is fighting cancer. She got this.” Awww! On Sechi’s Facebook page, she posted the same photo with the caption “If you’re bald. I’m bald.

Nicolay, currently a freshman at Iowa State University, explained to ABC News, “She’s shaving her head…so I’m shaving it with her. It wasn’t an option for me.” Sechi had also been attending Iowa State but withdrew last semester when she discovered what was later determined to be a desmoplastic small-round-cell tumor, about the size of a baseball, in her stomach.

Nicolay’s Reddit post has blown up on the Internet and has already been flooded with messages from well-wishers and encouragement and advice from others battling cancer. “You’re doing a great thing by sticking by your GF,” wrote one user, who explained that he is currently engaged to be married and is fighting cancer. “Stay strong buddy.”

Nicolay wrote to The Huffington Post that his girlfriend “is strong and determined, almost stubborn and a little thing like cancer will be but a speed bump to her.”

We think it’s so inspiring and sweet how these two are sticking together and fighting one of the hardest battles there is. What do you girls think of their sweet story? Would you do something like this for one of your loved ones?
