Carrie Underwood’s New Single About Baptism and Her Faith

On the night of the CMA awards, November 5, 2014, Carrie Underwood released her new single, “Something in the Water.” The track is about her faith and relates to new life and baptism. I personally love the song and feel that she is a great light and example, not only in country music, but also in the secular music industry. There are few godly role models nowadays, especially in the secular industry. Carrie doesn’t always sing about Jesus, but has made an impact with “Jesus Take the Wheel” and other music she has sung like “How Great Thou Art,” an old hymn.

When interviewed by Glamour magazine, according to The Christian Post, Carrie talked about sharing her faith in country music. She said, Country music is different. You have that Bible Belt-ness about it. I’m not the first person to sing about God, Jesus or faith [or] any of that, and I won’t be the last. And it won’t be the last for me, either. If you don’t like it, change the channel.”

Here are some lyrics from Carrie’s recent song, “Something in the Water”:

…Wasting a life that the Good Lord gave me

Then somebody said what I’m saying to you
Opened my eyes and told me the truth.”
They said, “Just a little faith, it’ll all get better.”
So I followed that preacher man down to the river

And now I’m changed
And now I’m stronger

There must’ve been something in the water
Oh, there must’ve been something in the water

Well, I heard what he said and I went on my way
Didn’t think about it for a couple of days
Then it hit me like a lightning late one night
I was all out of hope and all out of fight

Couldn’t fight back the tears so I fell on my knees
Saying, “God, if you’re there come and rescue me.”
Felt love pouring down from above
Got washed in the water, washed in the blood

And now I’m changed
And now I’m stronger

There must be something in the water
Oh, there must be something in the water…

While I love that she’s being so open about her faith, there is still a small problem in this song: throughout it, the song seems to attribute her strength and the change in her life to “something in the water.” I find it awesome that I hear this kind of song on secular radio all the time, but I wish she had put a little more emphasis on the fact that GOD was responsible for her salvation, change, and strength. A good way to do that might have been changing the words to: “There must have been SomeONE in the water,” or something even better than that. I am not disparaging this song in any way, I simply would have liked God’s work to be more apparent in the song.
