Caught Being Godly: What Does This Christian Fashion Designer Think About Modesty and Bikinis?

Hey sweet ladies! It’s finally summer, which usually means beach and pool weather! In the spirit of the season and in connection with one of our popular themes on PI, modesty, I thought it’d be interesting to take the discussion of bikinis a little further.

I found this cool clip of a presentation given by Jessica Rey, a Christian designer and actress. She discusses the history of the swimsuit, how it affects boys and its reflection on women.

I found it really interesting and wanted to share it with you. Take a listen and share your thoughts! I love, love LOVE to hear from you! ๐Ÿ™‚

Ladies, do you agree with Rey? Do you wear a bikini or do you feel that they’re too immodest?

I used to wear bikinis. I never wore string bikinis or anything very immodest, but I got sunburned really bad one time so I wear rashguards over my bikini top and swim shorts now. I also like the modesty benefits that my swimwear choice comes with now.

I have a bikini but because we live in Michigan my mom’s deal was I could have one as long as I got a pair of surf shorts and a surf top to go over it. I don’t think I have ever worn anything but a one piece or a tankini besides this.

That’s great, but the problem is we’re stuck between bikinis, one pieces that aren’t really cute or attractive, or ones like the ones on her website, which are absolutely adorable, but waaaaay to expensive

I completely agree. I believe also that modesty is also an attitude, not just what you wear. But in that attitude we need to choose what is appropriate. I loved how she said “It doesn’t always have to be itsy-bitsy”. Because today in our society that is exactly what culture tells us. I love it how there are other people “rebeling” so to speak, against the culture.

I watched this last year and it really makes sense when you think about it! It’s nice to know that you can look fashionable but not have to show a lot of skin. And, to ivyandroses, THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THE WEBSITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE BATHING SUITS ARE SO CUTE!!!!!!!!! I want one.

For me, it depends on how the bikini is made. If it has a low cut and the bottoms are basically a thong- absolutely not! But when it is swim shorts and an appropriate top, then it’s OK for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

Is there actually a swim suit line where there are cute one pieces such as what she had shown? I’ve tried to find them and have not.

That really hit home for me. I always battle with the want to “fit in” but also wanting to dress for God. her last comment about dressing to show beauty that i have was amazing.

I totally believe that two peices are just wrong and completely immodest.
anyone ever noticed how it is so called “slutty” when a female posts a picture of herself in her bra and/or underwear online, yet females always post pics of them in bikinis, at pools, beaches or in their house, and suddenly “its cute/sexy”
What in the world? Most of the time, bikinis show more than underwear!!
It is completely revealing and absolutely causes lust without a doubt and God does not approve. Your body is for your husbands to see ladies, not the rest of the world.
I wear a water resistant tank top and swimming shorts (with underwear and a bar underneath) but you could also wear a bikini underneath.

I realize you were trying to make a point, but you really shouldn’t call other women “slutty” for wearing bikinis. I wear them because they are more comfortable to swim in, and I feel that until God convicts me on the matter, it really shouldn’t be up to other girls. I respect my body just like the Bible says to; I keep myself healthy. I do not walk around half naked everywhere, and I’m always fully clothed. But if I want to go to the beach or pool, I should be able to wear a bikini, that by the way covers my bum and my chest, without being referred to as slutty or be blamed for men’s “inevitable” lust everyone is speaking, which is just an assumption. Besides, I go to the beach to swim and be in the water, and at that point it is no longer an issue, because you won’t be seen. But by all means, if you aren’t comfortable wearing a bikini and you feel like God is telling you to do otherwise, please do so. Adam and Eve walked around naked; it wasn’t until they sinned that they felt shame. I am by no means saying it is ok to walk around naked; it is always good to cover yourself and be “modest,” but when it comes to swimwear, wear what you feel comfortable in until God personally says otherwise and just swim.

You are totally right. And, really, you shouldn’t compromise your values for the sake of a guy. It’s just shallow.

Not to mention the negativce impact is has on females and how they view themselves by comparing their bodys to other females around them in bikinis. It is disrespectful to not only your own body, but to other women who want to go swimming with their man but at the same time they DONT want to because its uncomfortable for them to bring their man around half naked women that are just gonna make her feel even more self concious. Us females have it bad enough when it comes to self image in this society.. why do we make it worse on eachother by dressing this way?

Jessica is such an inspiration! I used to wear bikinis to the local pool, and I realized that my intentions for wearing them were wrong. I wanted to get attention from boys, I wanted to feel sexy and beautiful. But God told me to search my heart, and I realized that I was wrong. Also this video helped a lot! Girls, your value is not placed on how rockin your body is or how sexy you dress, it’s found in your spirit and in your Godly character. …I want to make a decision to wear cute one-pieces instead from now on. =)

AMEN AND AMEN!!!!!!!! I love how you put that!! Sometimes I feel bad because I’m not wearing things as revealing as others, which are usually what gets boys attention. But, God sees me as beautiful, and I don’t have to show a whole bunch of skin for Him to notice me. ๐Ÿ™‚

I know so many girls who need to hear this. So many churches nowadays (at least in my area) don’t touch up on the subject of modesty. I’m sure it’s so they don’t offend anyone, but girls need to hear the truth. This could impact so many girls and how they view themselves. This video is incredible. I love it and agree with it 1000%.

Oh my gosh!!! That was awesome!! I’ve never worn a bikini, but I have a lot of older female cousins who do. It used to terrify me that one day I would be at the age when all of them would expect me to wear a bikini too. I haven’t yet, and I don’t intend to. That was very interesting!!

I am so glad I watched this! It is refreshing to know that others think modesty is important! I used to wear bikinis because I don’t have “curves” so I felt it didn’t really matter and I was young, but now as I’m soon turning 16 and I am strengthening my relationship with God and really applying what He commands us to do, I have been applying modesty more! I love her swimsuit designs and I am looking forward to finding modest fashion that will show girls that they can be beautiful without showing off their bodies! Thank you Jessica Rey for showing us that modesty can be fashionable!!

This information was very helpful as I am a fashion designer myself, and I was thinking about creating one pieces instead of two piece bikinis. I think one pieces are more modest.

Okay so maybe the Bible doesn’t specifically tell us how important modesty is, or what we should or should not wear. And sure maybe it is the guy’s problem if he looks at us with lust……But couldn’t this all be summed up in a pretty well know verse? Ephesians 4:32 and I am sure you all know it! Yea guys may be sinning by looking at us with lust…but nobody is perfect…so can’t we just forgive and be kind by dressing modestly and making it a bit less of a problem? Yes lust is sin….but we have all make mistakes!
