College Beat: I’m Second-Guessing My Major! What Should I Do?
Written by Christi Given | November 28, 2015
Everyone has their moments of doubt, but when it comes to education, there is no time to waste. Time is literally money in school, especially at a university, so how can you make sure you made the right decision on your major?
Do You Enjoy What You Study?
Make sure your reasons for choosing your major are because you enjoy it, you’re interested in the subject or field, and you’re interested in learning and of course eventually pursuing this type of work. If you hesitate on any of those levels regarding why you chose the major you chose, then you should reconsider.
Did You Decide on Your Major or Did Your Parents Choose It for You?
If you are majoring in something because your friends or family pressured you to do it, then you should ask yourself what you really see yourself doing in the future. Only YOU can make decisions for yourself. Your parents aren’t the ones who will be working for you, and neither will your bestie, so with all the hard work, money and time spent, you need to confirm, pray and ask God to give you clarity.
Don’t Worry About Graduation—Worry About Succeeding Today
If you are just worrying about after graduation, money and being hired, those are all normal fears regarding a change in life. We all sweat the typical responsibilities, pressures in society, and of course we all want to be successful and make our family proud. You must be able to discern if you are doubting your major because maybe God is telling you that is not what He called you to, or maybe it just doesn’t feel right. Follow the Holy Spirit’s leading and really pray, and ask for a youth leader or parent’s advice. Also, schedule a campus counselor or student advisory meeting if needed.
Ask God for Help and for the Holy Spirit to Guide You
You need to first figure out what you really want to pursue, and major in that field, even if you think it seems impossible or is scary. You have to step out and do what you love—otherwise, why are you spending so much time and money on an education that makes you miserable or anxious? Pray, seek God, seek wise counsel and really assess your passions. Then, if you are confident about your major after looking at all the logistics, move forward in your decision with confidence. Don’t let spouts of doubt get you off course.
Don’t Keep Changing Majors—It Wastes Precious Time
Students tend to change majors, but it isn’t a wise idea to keep altering your schedule because it wastes time, money and also what you could be accomplishing if you stuck with your primary decision. There are exceptions—but unless you have no clue and need to try out different majors and minors in multiple fields, for the most part try to home in on what you like and where your strengths are. Don’t beat yourself up; we are all on a journey here, and self-discovery is a part of that, too!

Praying for you all as you navigate your future! Remember, God has GREAT plans for you! (Jeremiah 29:11, Ephesians 3:20) Never give up, and when you don’t know what to do, or whom to ask, go to the Almighty God.
PI Girls, have you ever questioned your major, and if so, what did you do to overcome your doubt?
