Franklin Graham, Lecrae, and Other Christian Leaders Respond to Kobe and Gigi Bryant’s Death

On Sunday morning, Kobe Bryant and his thirteen-year-old daughter Gigi were tragically killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

The retired NBA star was headed to his daughter’s basketball game when all of a sudden the helicopter went down, taking the lives of the nine people on board.

There were including John Altobelli, the head baseball coach at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California; his wife, Keri Altobelli; and their daughter Alyssa who was Gianna’s teammate. Payton Chester, a 13-year-old basketball player, and her mother, Sarah were also on board the helicopter. Christina Mauser was also on board, who was the assistant coach for Gianna Bryant’s Mamba Academy basketball team. Ara Zobayan also passed away, a pilot who had been Bryant’s personal pilot for years.

The news devastated the nation and rocked basketball fans to their core. Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star who was just four years out of retirement was more than just an all-star player, but a beloved father, coach, and husband.

Social media lit up following the devastating news with everyone from the President to Tiger Woods chiming in with their condolences.

Lecrae shared a video of Kobe and Gigi to Instagram, writing, “Lord We pray for the Bryant family. We pray for all those affected. We pray for the other families of those in the helicopter. We ask that your Spirit would be a comforter. In Jesus name.”

Chad Veach, the megachurch pastor of Zoe Church in L.A, shared a photo of Kobe and Gigi to Instagram writing, “Devastating… prayers to the Bryant family and all those effected by today’s tragedy. LA will never be the same… I heard Bill Plaschke talk this week about Kobe being the most important Laker ever. An iconic leader that meant so much to this city and the world… unreal.”

Evangelist Franklin Graham shared a tribute to Facebook writing, “Our deepest condolences and prayers for the families of NBA-great Kobe Bryant, his 13-yr-old daughter, and the other victims in this tragic helicopter crash in California today. Please remember them in your prayers.”

“Anytime there is tragedy like this, it is a reminder of the brevity of life and that none of us know when we are going to have to stand before God and give an account for our lives. Are you ready?”
