Girl to Girl Talk: Are My Desires God’s Desires?

A PI Girl recently asked how to know if our desires are God’s desires. What if she prays for something and it’s not in God’s plan for her life?

If you want to ask questions or join the PI chat or Girl Talk forum, click here.

Also, read a similar article here about following God.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)

This is a great question about our desires verses God’s desires. Some people may take the verse in Psalm 37:4 in the Bible, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart,” out of context. Listen, we don’t use the Holy Word of God to manipulate our situation or to turn around and get upset if things are not going our way or as planned. We are missing the WHOLE point of that verse if that is the attitude or view of that scripture. The whole point is to desire and delight in the Lord above all else…when you delight in Him, everything else is secondary. When you delight in Him, you are in LOVE, you are CONFIDENT with the plans GOD has for you, knowing full well you don’t have the best plans, but He does, amen? When you truly KNOW who God is and who our beloved Savior is, doubt does not dominate because you KNOW God is so faithful and His track record is too good.

It is normal to ponder these things in life. We all go through seasons where we don’t know what God’s plan is and we ultimately need guidance. We all have seasons where we are waiting on our desires to come to pass, but we wonder if it is even God’s plan. Trust me, I’ve been there.

 But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

I pray God will give you peace and strength during those waiting seasons. I pray God gives you clarity and vision for the future. God’s Word does say that if we delight in Him (putting Him first—Matt 6:33), then all things will be added unto us. Usually what I have learned is God’s plan is always better than what we thought! Yes, even BETTER than the plans we could ever plan for our lives. If we can just trust in our Father and walk with Him daily (having daily bread and fellowship with Him in the Word), then God will reveal His plan (Matt 6:11). No, it won’t be overnight, and to be honest, it’s usually not on our timetable—but PI Girls, I promise if you honor God, trust Him and seek Him first genuinely, He will honor your patience and faithfulness! He is so trustworthy and faithful.

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,

For his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;

therefore I will wait for him.

(Lamentations 3:22-24)

Are God’s desires my desires?

Sometimes we can doubt if our desires are God’s will. First, ask yourself: Is whatever I desire a godly, God-honoring thing? If it edifies God or is a good thing, then I would say yes, it will most likely happen, just in God’s timing. Remember, though, keep yourself open and surrender to God’s plan because He can see the whole picture. Your good plans may not compare to His GREAT plans, amen? Sometimes if we align our hearts with God’s heart, our desires become His desires.

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love him (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Many people may be thinking, “I am putting God first—I pray, I go to church, I read the Bible—but I am frustrated because I don’t see God moving.” Well, that’s right: You can’t see what God can see. He is always moving, and HE IS WORKING FOR YOU behind the scenes! Isn’t that cool? God isn’t on a time limit in eternity—He already knows the end from the beginning. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, amen? (Revelation 22:13) He is so amazing and all-powerful and He has such BIG, amazing plans for you—you probably would be overwhelmed if you knew all the plans for your future He had for you (Jeremiah 29:11).

Remember God loves you. He sent His Son Jesus to die for you and your sins 2,000 years ago. This alone should be enough. But when we feel alone, when we suffer, we suffer with Christ. When we suffer for Christ, we will reign with Him in high places. Don’t lose heart, or hope. God wants to test if you truly trust in HIM. In God alone. God made you in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139), therefore He knows your desires and wants to bless you. My precious sisters in the Lord, Jesus loves you and wants you to have an abundant life (John 10:10).

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. (Romans 8:17)

Some practical tips and words of wisdom pertaining to the subject of aligning your desires with God’s and waiting on His timing:

  • Ask God for confirmation. (God will show you His path.)
  • Pray, pray, pray and, of course, read God’s Word.
  • Don’t quit. Write down your Vision and ask God for His.
  • Guard your heart from bitterness, fear and confusion.
  • Ask for wisdom; God will give generously (James 1:5).
  • Wait on God’s timing. In the meantime, enjoy God!
  • Ask a mentor, parent or youth leader for advice.
  • Learn to submit to God’s plan and to serve Him where you are.

PI Girls, write your prayer requests below and I will be praying for you and your heart’s desires. Jesus loves you so much! Feel free to contact me via social media on facebook.com/ChristiGiven. God bless you!

      There should be a fair amount of prayer that goes into what God wants for your life, but also keep in mind that God has given you godly wisdom to know what it right from wrong and to make your own decisions.

    I been out of a job for three months. Interview after interview and I came across a job and got an interview not too long after. Me and the lady had a conversation, laughed and everything. I thought I had it. I prayed and prayed. I thought God was closing a door for me at the other job and will open a door for me at the other.job. I was wrong. When the manager called me and told me I didn’t get it I felt down, I wanted to give up on God so bad because he didn’t answer my prayers. But I know I am a child of God and defeat will not be an option. But I ask that you please keep me in your prayers. Thank you :).

    I want to be a singer/songwriter. but i know nothing really about music. and my voice is pretty good but not “the Voice” good. I dont know how this would be able to come to pass. I dont even have a major. I dont really know where my life is headed, except towards Christ. i also want to get married someday, but that seems to be distant at this point.

    Hey so I often don’t feel like I have the opportunity to share my prayers with others, but I feel compelled to now. Currently, I’m in college, and God has given me contentment that it’s the right place to be. I ask that God give me wisdom in this time period, and that I devote all my energy to His glorification. I have a current situation with a boy that’s confusing me, and I’d like contentment and wisdom is that situation. I should be focusing on the present and not so much on my future, but I have had the inkling lately that after college I should join the Navy as a diver and after that pursue graduate school in Near Eastern Language & Civ and Nautical Archaeology. (I’m interested in being a writer/explorer) I’ve always wanted to do so much, but I wish to focus on God one step and day at a time. I pray for patience and peace. No more worrying or overthinking for me! Thanks guys!

    Thank You for posting this, I was feeling stressed lately and this made me feel so much better knowing God’s plans aren’t always what we imagined. 🙂

    I’m praying and stepping the direction of being a missionary! Next year in June, and please pray that God will open all the doors and make it apparent and clear. Also, I have a long neck injury that’s being healed. For patience and faith through this season. Thank you so much. Much love, Summer.

      I’m definitely praying for you because I desire to be a missionary, too. I got to go on a mission trip for the whole summer through Project 52/Nehemiah Teams and it was completely life changing. However, it isn’t an easy road by any means so I’m praying that God will allow you to grow strong in your faith, for Him to grant you wisdom in all situations, and that He will remind you when things get frustrating and difficult, that it is a privilege to live in humble service for the King.

      I will pray that God gives you the wisdom and strength that you will need for the mission field. Good luck, and God bless,
