Girl to Girl Talk: Honor God by Serving Him
Written by Christi Given | January 9, 2013
Every week, I go through our Girl Talk message boards to find topics that are popping, and contribute my thoughts where it makes sense! One topic that caught my eye was written by PI Girl iliveforgod.
Hey! I just want some advice about a few of my friends. All my friends go to church and call themselves Christians, but I don’t think they know what that means. If I didn’t know them, I would never think they were Christians. They act like everyone else.
What does it mean to be Christian? What does it mean to honor God? Do your friends serve God, themselves or the world and its system? Do they share their talents or time in the house of God? And what about you? Do you also serve God? I want to share the significance of giving your time and talent to the Lord. In the Bible it tells us,
You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:5).

It is important to be a good steward of our time and talents, and recognize who we are destined to be. Christ calls us to be servants and He said that the lowly are the highest and the highest are the lower in the Kingdom of God.
This is the opposite of the world’s system. It can be hard because it requires us to be different, to live set apart and to be unique. It requires us to love ourselves unconditionally, but to love others even above ourselves, serve one another in love and share the good news with others. We also need to share our gifts with the church and the body of Christ, building it up continually.
But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant (Luke 22:26).
It says in the Word that you can only serve one master. Let’s not be complacent or absent in the body of Christ as the church. Let us be active, open, willing and bold in service.
You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love (Galatians 5:13).
When Jesus is Lord of your life, you can’t help but want to give Him your all, serve Him and help others get to know Him. It is so powerful to see this, not only in my life, but also in the lives of my friends and loved ones. The Lord calls us to serve because we are representing how Jesus was–He came to set us free, and to be humble and serve. Even Jesus said:
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

There are so many reasons God wants us to serve, love others, humble ourselves and give. One is because it is a reflection of who Christ is. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords came in a humble manger to eat and dwell among us, to show us His power and love, and to sacrifice His own life to give us life eternal. It seems so upside down from the world and is definitely not what human nature finds normal or natural.
The truth is that it is supernatural. God’s ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55). He is higher, so powerful and on the throne. His purposes are everlasting and our minds cannot fathom how much He loves us! Let us live out this life to the fullest (John 10:10) and to refresh, encourage and serve one another in the love of Christ!
A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed (Proverbs 11:25).
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (John 13:14-17).
PI readers, how do you give to those around you? Do you volunteer, help your Mom around the house, or offer your time at your church? Focus on service, and help your friends do it too. Write a comment below and share how you help refresh others!
