Girl to Girl Talk: How Do I Improve a Mediocre Prayer Life?

Project Inspired started a group specifically for the Girl Talk questions, which typically come from the Girl Talk chat wall on Facebook.

This week on the Facebook wall chat, a PI Girl asked about how to improve her “mediocre” prayer life. I want to talk about what prayer really is, and I am going to give some tips on how to pray effectively.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

In the Bible, Jesus gives us the example to pray to the Father and that we should ask for HIS will to be done (Matthew 6:9). The key is not to just pray when we need something, but to have a continual conversation with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Through prayer, we also can hear God, and it is not always based on asking God for requests, but can be a time where you receive instruction from the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 30:21).

The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth. (Psalm 145:18)

And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:12)

Advice on How to Effectively Pray

1. Pray for Wisdom: God loves when we ask for wisdom. He promises that He will give it to us generously, only for those who have faith (James 1:5).

2. Seek God First: Ask the Lord for His perfect will because it is the ultimate best for your life. We often think we know what’s best, but His plans are far greater than we can imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

3. Talk to God Like a Friend and Listen, Too: Sometimes we forget to pray or we think we have to use fancy or eloquent words to communicate to God, but no, the Lord just wants you to talk to Him and praise Him. Just as with a friendship, you don’t speak the whole time, so make sure to take time to hear the still small voice of God (1 Kings 19:12).

4. Continually Pray: Prayer time isn’t just a quick morning list of what you need or want, or a goodnight ritual, or even a meal blessing, but it is deep intimacy with the Father through the Son and the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. (Romans 8:26)

5. Thank God Continually: The Bible literally says that God’s will for our lives is to continually praise Him and thank Him. Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and has the name that is above every other name…He is worthy of all honor and glory. Don’t just reserve your praise for when you’re in the car, at a church service or at youth camp. Praise Him all day in your spirit and mind. God loves when you appreciate and adore Him!

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Thank you for writing this. I have a tendency to say a bunch of things to God and then walk away afterwards, or get in the motions of using eloquent words when I pray, thinking God will hear me better. I know I definitely need to improve in this area. This post resonates with this post on prayer. https://jenswalkwithgod.wordpress.com/2017/08/07/the-subject-of-prayer/

Learning to talk to God like a friend was so important in my walk! There’s no point in trying to impress God, for he sees us exactly as we are. And loves us. How refreshing! Who wouldn’t want to have a relationship like that?
