Every week, I go through the “Girl Talk” section of Project Inspired and look for those seeking advice and counsel. I want to help answer some questions you may have about living out your Christian life and walk of faith! We want PI to be a safe place where you can ask questions. Contact me @ChristiGiven.
This week, a PI Girl who is 16 years old asked about how to focus on the Lord and not boys. To read her full post, click here:
“Recently I have been having problems with guys (I mean, who doesn’t?) and it’s just been getting so overwhelming. I am not planning on getting married anytime soon, but I still feel attracted to guys. I’m too young to think about these stuff, but it’s just been getting too complicated and I just wanna focus on God right now. What are some tips you guys can give me to focus more on God and not on boys? … I want to learn more about God and strengthen my relationship with Him….”
In general, sometimes it is easy to get distracted or to focus on people or opinions rather than God. Of course in life we all need a balance of healthy friendships, relationships, time with family, time in fellowship and, most importantly, we need to make time for God. [Read my article on how to stay balanced and how to juggle the different aspects of life by clicking here.]
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)
What we need to do is to put God first in our daily lives, just like Lauren Daigle sings in the song, “First.” (Kidding, but not.) We need to practically put the Lord first with our time, treasure/finance and in our talents/giftings. How do we implement putting God first and keeping Jesus at the center of it all? First, we need to go to the Lord in prayer when we start our day. We need to seek God’s Kingdom and ask HIM what HIS will is for us today. Prayer will set the tone for your day and will usher in peace. You can hear God more clearly and will be open for a day with God and how He wants you to live your life.
Next, we want to read the Bible (the Word of God), whether that be in a devotion time before or after school/work, or if that is on your lunch break on your Bible app or devotional. Making time for God by heeding His Word will open up the opportunity for God to speak to you. His Word is God-breathed and is alive, the Bible says (2 Timothy 3:16).
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16)
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)
PI Girls, there is nothing wrong with liking a boy or wanting a relationship, but remember that if you are not mature enough or old enough to handle a relationship, it can become distracting from either God, your schoolwork or your passions and hobbies. Also, some people may not be distracted by guys, but they may be very swayed by people’s opinions, which can be dangerous because we need to stand in confidence knowing who God says we are, which is that we are royal daughters of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. We are royal heirs to God’s Kingdom and we should not get our validation, approval or love from man, but only from God. Everything else is just icing on the cake, amen?
“I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters,” says the Lord Almighty. (2 Corinthians 6:18)
Some of you may also be struggling with trying to win your parents’ approval, but guess what? It will never stop with trying to win people’s approval for you. Yes, honor your parents, and of course you want to make them proud, but your identity isn’t in making anyone happy or proud of you; rather, you are a chosen, adopted child of God. I pray you have an audience of one, that you will seek God in ALL things, and that you will never be swayed by people’s opinions of you, whether in school, youth group, work and so forth.
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10)
