Girl to Girl Talk: How Do You Conquer Fear as a Christian?

Every week, I go through the “Girl Talk” section of Project Inspired and look for those seeking advice and counsel. I want to help answer some questions you may have about living out your Christian life and walk of faith! We want PI to be a safe place where you can ask questions.

Fear can sideswipe anyone at any time in life regarding the future, finances, relationships, grades and so forth. But we need to remember God wants us to stand in faith and reminds us in scripture He has NOT given us a spirit of fear.

A PI Girl posted in the Girl Talk forum and asked:

“[Fear] prevents me from living life, stepping out and loving others. This is my first post, but I thought I’d share a verse of a song that rings in my head: ‘Without faith, it is impossible to please God.’ How do you conquer fears?”

We need to ask God to cover our minds with the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17) and we need to read the Word and speak the truth over our lives. There is so much coming at us from media to TV ads to social-media feeds to the pressure to be perfect and to conform to society’s ways—but we need to remember that GOD is for US! It says in Romans 8:31 that if God is for us, who can be against us?

Also, God tells us in the Bible to not compare ourselves to others and not compare our lot(s) to one another. God has a plan and purpose for our lives. He doesn’t want to harm or hurt you, but rather bless you (Jeremiah 29:11). He is our heavenly Father and of course wants to bless us, but we must walk in the Word, in prayer and in the Spirit, and refute and rebuke the lies of the enemy.

It says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Where Do Lies Come From and Why Do I Keep Battling Fear?

Lies can come from our emotions, stress, circumstances, anxiousness, worry, doubt, not trusting in God, a lack of reading the Bible, a lack of prayer, watching TV programs that speak negatively in our lives, comparing ourselves to the world and so forth. Lies can be birthed from just not guarding our heart and mind. See, if the enemy can get our heart, he can get to our mind. We also need to watch what comes into our mind because it DOES affect our heart, which overflows into our lives, attitudes, thoughts, behaviors, habits and lifestyle. Despite circumstances, let us walk in boldness and in faith; allow our trials to sharpen us to be stronger in character (James 1); and to bless others when they are in need.

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. (Proverbs 4:23)

So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. (Matt 10:31)

We need to focus on the things above, on the things that matter, like eternity. This earth is temporal; this life does not last. The things of the earth will fade. Where is your treasure? What are your heart and mind focused on? What are you allowing in your life to taint your view of God? Do you compare yourself to others on social media or fall into the trap of the sin of covetousness? Let us be content, thankful and rejoicing in the things we ALREADY have. God has blessed us abundantly with the spiritual gifting, and then has met our earthly needs, too. We need to keep our perspective, right? Amen? We ALL need this reminder! Even I do, as I am speaking to you, I am speaking to myself, okay, dear sisters in Christ? We can DO THIS! We can overcome the schemes of the enemy! He has NO power! Only what we bow down to we give power.

The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. (Psalm 56:3)

We need to walk in the anointing and authority God has given to us! There is a royal calling on your life, which is why the enemy attacks and seeks whom he can destroy, which is why we should not be surprised by trials or by the tug of war. Remember to clothe yourself with the truth (the Bible), stay in fellowship, listen to worship and feed your mind positive words over negative messages that can be battling for our attention: music, movies, TV shows, other media, etc. Avoid negative, demonic, dark, oppressive films or even songs that have curse words. You need to make sure you watch what you watch. People are so desensitized nowadays and don’t realize what they open themselves up to spiritually when opening the door for the enemy to get a foothold.

Actions start with a thought, and we need to cast out thoughts of fear or doubt because it says in the Bible that the one who doubts is blown and tossed by the wind and is double-minded. We don’t want to be double-minded; rather, we want to walk in peace and clarity and have good vision for the future, amen? Instead of fearing something, we should have a reverent fear of God. (Not a bad fear, but healthy, holy fear in the sense that we want to honor and obey God.) Let us flip the attacks on fear from the enemy and use them for good in the Kingdom. DO NOT FEAR, precious one—God is on your side!

PI Girls, I pray this article helps you to remember God is with you, for you, loves you, has plans for you and doesn’t want you to operate in fear, but rather in faith and boldness. Comment below for prayer requests or for extra advice regarding the topic of fear.

    1. My three worst fears are tornadoes, hypnosis, and dating (or more specific, fear of being emotionally and/or sexually manipulated/exploited while dating), but recently I’m becoming slightly frightened of the future: Having to go out and get a permanent job someday, how to pay off student loans/ college debt, and officially living away from home (excluding vacays, etc.) for the very first time…. I’ll need all the help I can get. Like this article– thanks! 🙂

    2. I can relate to this article, thank you for this! I was definitely fearing and worrying about the future, but from now on i will always remind myself that God has great plans for my life and he is always by my side. 🙂
