For the last few weeks, Kanye West has been promoting his newest album “Jesus Is King,” by appearing on a few select shows.
Last week, the rapper appeared on the Late Late Show With James Corden where he and his entire chorus team flew on an airplane with Corden in a special segment called “Airpool Karaoke.”
During the flight, West performed a few of his new songs from “Jesus Is King,” talked about his faith journey, and the future of his “Sunday Services.”
During the flight, West shared with Corden that the idea to host Sunday Services actually came to him when he was in the hospital a few years back.
“When I went to the hospital a few years ago, I wrote in the hospital ‘start a church in Calabasas,’” West shared. “It’s something I had a feeling that I needed to do, that God put on my heart. Now, He keeps on taking us to new levels.”
Corden, quoting one of West’s songs said: “I need to talk to God, but I’m afraid cos’ it’s been so long.”
“How long were you holding onto that feeling before you get to that place where you’re in the hospital and you write down that you need to start a church?” Corden asked West.
“God’s always had a plan for me and he wanted to use me,” West responded. “But I think he wanted me to suffer more and wanted people to see my suffering and see my pain and put stigmas on me and have me go through all the human experiences.”
“When I talk about how Jesus saved me, more people can relate to that experience. If it was just, ‘We grew up with this guy and now he’s a superstar,’ it’s less compelling than this guy who had a mental breakdown and was in debt,” West added.
Over the course of the flight, West’s choir performed “Jesus Walks,” “Souls Anchored,” and “Selah.” Each song holds a distinctly Christian message, to which even Corden sang along with.
